UAE hosts conference on 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s independence (October 6, 2011)
The “Azerbaijan” society in the United Arab Emirates has organized a conference on the 20th
anniversary of restoration of the independence of Azerbaijan on October, 6. The event brought together
members of the Azerbaijani and Turkish communities, Iraqi Turkmen, officials and others. Speaking at the
conference, head of the “Azerbaijan” society Samir Imanov briefed the participants on the history of the
independence. He said a new stage had started in the history of Azerbaijan when national leader Heydar
Aliyev came to power again in 1993. Imanov also said as a result of the successful policy of President
Ilham Aliyev, who continues the national leader`s policy, Azerbaijan had become one of the most
dynamically developing country. The participants were handed over brochures and books featuring
Azerbaijan`s history, culture and art, national leader Heydar Aliyev`s lifetime and activity, as well as
Nagorno Karabakh conflict. The conference also featured a documentary on the accomplishments in
Azerbaijan.

Gala concert marking anniversary of Azerbaijan's independence in Bishkek (October 12, 2011)
Culture and Tourism Ministry of Azerbaijan and embassy of Azerbaijan to Kyrgyzstan organized a
gala concert in Kyrgyz-Russian Russian Drama Theatre in Bishkek marking 20th anniversary of
Azerbaijan’s independence. The concert opened by playing anthems of Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan.
Azerbaijani ambassador Arif Agayev greeted the concert participants and gave an insight on creation of
Azerbaijan People’s Republic, the steps taken in short period of time and reasons behind the collapse of
this state. Azerbaijan People’s Republic adopted its national flag, anthem and coat of arms after it gained
independence, the envoy said. The envoy also talked about return of famous politician Heydar Aliyev to
Baku upon people’s insistence in 1993, his efforts to eliminate a threat of civil war in the country, the
reforms conducted at that time and the signing of the Contract of Century. Agayev noted that President
Ilham Aliyev continues the political line of national leader Heydar Aliyev and Azerbaijan is one of the
leading countries for the pace of economic growth. President of Turkel Fund in Bishkek Hokuma Khalilova
and editor-in-chief of Turkel newspaper Ramiz Mashadihasanli spoke about Azerbaijan-Kyrgyzstan ties and
economic growth of the country. The documentary “Azerbaijan is on a path of development” was displayed
as part of the event. Member of the Fikrat Amirov Azerbaijan State Song and Dance Ensemble, People’s
Artist of Azerbaijan Anar Shushali and soloist of the Muslim Magomayev Azerbaijan State Philharmonic
Hall Almaz Orujova performed folk songs and tasnifs of Azerbaijan while dancers performed national dance

20th anniversary of restoration of Azerbaijan`s independence marked in Copenhagen (October 16, 2011)
Azerbaijan`s “Vatan” (Motherland) Society in Copenhagen with support of the State Committee for
Work with Diaspora has organized a celebratory event to mark the 20th anniversary of restoration of
independence of Azerbaijan. Opening the event, head of the Society, Safar Sadiqi spoke of the
achievements that Azerbaijan gained over the past 20 years. Azerbaijani ambassador to UK with
concurrent accreditation to Denmark Fakhraddin Gurbanov briefed the participants on the history of the
country`s independence. Professor of the Denmark University Karl Eric Frederic and political pundit Vetslav
Kichilenko congratulated the Azerbaijani people on the 20th anniversary of restoration of independence.
The celebratory event was attended by members of the Azerbaijani and Turkish communities, officials,
parliamentarians, diplomats, journalists.

20th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s independence marked in Tabriz (October 17, 2011)
Azerbaijan`s Consulate General in Tabriz has hosted an official reception over the 20th anniversary
of the country`s independence. The event brought together Iranian officials, employees of Turkish
Consulate General in Tabriz, prominent figures of the city and journalists. Participants of the reception
watched a documentary film “Azerbaijan”. Addressing the event, Azerbaijani Consul General Ali Alizade
highlighted the country`s great achievements. “The foundation of modern country was laid in Azerbaijan by
national leader Heydar Aliyev. And this policy is today being successfully continued by President Ilham
Aliyev,” added the Consul General. He said development of Azerbaijan-Iran relations meet interests of the
two countries` peoples. Alizade briefed participants on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Official of the Iranian Foreign Ministry Rza Yagubi congratulated the Azerbaijani people on the
Independence Day. Yagubi stressed the importance of development of relations between Iran and
Azerbaijan.

ISESCO marks 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s independence (October 17, 2011)
The 20th anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan`s independence was celebrated in the
permanent headquarters of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) in
Morocco`s capital Rabat. The celebration took place as part of the second meeting of the Alliance of
Civilizations Focal Points of the OIC Member States. Addressing the meeting`s opening ceremony, Director
General of ISESCO Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri said that Azerbaijan Embassy in Morocco has organized
a photo exhibition to the effect in the foyer of the permanent headquarters. Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri
congratulated Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Azeri people on the 20th Anniversary of Azerbaijan`s
independence. “I hope that ISESCO and the OIC Member States will support Azerbaijan`s candidacy for a
nonpermanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for 2012-2013,” he added. Director General of
ISESCO also underlined the importance of intercultural dialogue and the alliance of civilization, in such a
way as to promote world peace and security, and lay the foundations for a humane new world order,
drawing on the bases of international law, international legality and human rights protection. A film on
modern Baku was demonstrated in the event. Booklets on the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s
independence aroused interest among participators. Moroccan Arabian-language Al-Alam newspaper and
French-language La pnion published Azerbaijani ambassador`s interviews on the 20th anniversary of
Azerbaijan`s independence. According to Azerbaijan Embassy in Morocco, a two-day meeting brings
together representatives of the OIC Member States, Morocco`s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and
Cooperation Mrs Latifa Akherbach, officials, ambassadors of the OIC Member States in Rabat and mass
media.

Romania (October 17, 2011)
Azerbaijan`s Embassy in Romania with support of the New Azerbaijan Party has arranged an official
reception to mark the anniversary of restoration of independence. Opening the event, Ambassador Eldar
Hasanov spoke of the history of the Azerbaijani statehood. The diplomat said Azerbaijan was successfully
integrating into Euro-Atlantic structures. Hasanov also touched upon the humanitarian activities of the
Heydar Aliyev Foundation`s representation in Romania. Iulian Fota, National Security Advisor to the
President of Romania congratulated the Azerbaijani people on the occasion of the holiday. The reception
continued with a concert program. Another celebratory event to mark the anniversary of independence was
held in “Diplomatic Club” in Bucharest. Speaking at the event, ambassador Hasanov highlighted the
achievements made in Azerbaijan over the past 20 years. The diplomat underlined the role of national
leader Heydar Aliyev in protection of independence of the country. The ambassador also spoke of the
Nagorno Karabakh conflict, major projects initiated by Azerbaijan, as well as President Ilham Aliyev`s
successful domestic and foreign policy. Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi congratulated the
Azerbaijani people on the occasion of the holiday. The Minister praised the level of relationship between
Azerbaijan and Romania. The event participants were handed over publications featuring restoration of
Azerbaijan`s independence.

Iran (October 18, 2011)
The 20th anniversary of restoration of the independence of Azerbaijan has been celebrated in various
countries of the world. Azerbaijan`s Embassy in Iran has organized an official reception to celebrate the
20th anniversary of restoration of independence. The event brought together Iranian officials,
ambassadors, representatives of international organizations, Azerbaijanis living in the country. The
participants of the reception saw a documentary featuring Azerbaijan`s history, culture and social and
economic development. Opening the event, Ambassador Javanshir Akhundov briefed the participants on
the role of national leader Heydar Aliyev in protection and strengthening of independence. The diplomat
added the national leader`s policy was successfully continued by President Ilham Aliyev. Addressing the
event, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Ali Fathollahi called the independence of Azerbaijan
historical event. He also spoke of the importance of expansion of Azerbaijan-Iran relationship.

Azerbaijan in Stockholm musical celebration (October 19, 2011)
A recent concert in Stockholm City Hall brought the magic of Azerbaijani music to the Swedish
capital. Azerbaijan has had ample reason to celebrate in the past few weeks - and the cultural ties of the
republic in the South Caucasus with Sweden have been heavily in focus. Last week, the country’s entry
won the Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf. The song, Running Scared, was performed by Ell and
Nikki and written by a Swedish songwriting team. In Stockholm last week, however, a more classical strain
of Azerbaijani music was on display. The concert in Stockholm City Hall celebrated the 20th anniversary of
Azerbaijan’s independence from the Soviet Union, and gave Swedes and other guests the chance to
experience a rich musical heritage. The concert was performed to an invited audience, including Swedish
members of government and parliament, other public figures and Azerbaijanis living in Sweden. They
enjoyed a programme of music by prominent 19th and 20th century Azerbaijani composers. Composers
featured in the programme included Uzeir Hajibayov, Gara Garayev and Fikrat Amirov. The concert was
performed by the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, directed by Azerbaijani conductor Azad Aliyev.
Stockholm City Hall, best-known internationally as the scene of the annual Nobel Prize Banquet, provided a
location of suitable gravitas for the occasion. Prior to the concert, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Sweden,
Rafael Ibrahimov, spoke of the huge pace of development the country had experienced since
independence, with increasing prosperity and a diversifying economy. Among the soloists performing
during the evening were Azer Zeynalov, an award-winning Azerbaijani singer and pianist Farhad
Badalbayli, dean of the Azerbaijani State Philharmonic Society.

Day of Azerbaijan held in Egypt (October 19, 2011)
The Day of Azerbaijan was held in Cairo as part of celebrations of 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s
independence. Nil satellite TV channel of Egypt aired one-hour program about Azerbaijan as a part of the
event, the Azerbaijani embassy in Cairo said. Azerbaijani ambassador to Egypt Shahin Abdullayev
addressed the event. The Egyptian youth who tripped to Azerbaijan as winners of the essay competition
“What do I know about Azerbaijan” shared their impressions. Abdullayev spoke about Azerbaijan’s
independence history, establishment of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic as the first democratic republic in
the East, the collapse of this republic, Azerbaijan regaining its independence in 1991 and Armenia’s
aggressive policies against Azerbaijan since the first days of independence, Heydar Aliyev’s return to
power upon people’s persistence in such a hard time and thus start of a new page in Azerbaijan modern
history in a TV program. The ambassador noted accomplishments Azerbaijan has made in public, political,
economic, cultural fields and country’s fast-paced development secured under President Ilham Aliyev’s
leadership. Talking in detail about Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the ambassador briefed
the viewers on Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan, its policy of ethnic cleansing and Khojaly tragedy

Celebration of Independence of Azerbaijan in Italy (October 19, 2011)
Azerbaijani embassy in Italy organized an official reception at Roma Cavalieri Hilton on the Republic
Day of Azerbaijan on May 28. Representatives of the Italian government organizations, education and
culture centers, local media and diplomatic corps in Roma, as well as Azerbaijanis living in Italy attended
the reception, press service of the embassy told APA. Welcoming the guests, Azerbaijani Ambassador to
Italy Vagif Sadigov spoke about the ancient statehood traditions of Azerbaijan, history of the Republic Day.
Ambassador Sadigov said this year Azerbaijan celebrated 20th anniversary of the restoration of its state
independence and informed the guests about the problems the country faced in this period, Armenian
aggression against Azerbaijan and its painful results. Despite all of these obstacles, the government of
Azerbaijan, based on ancient statehood traditions, has achieved stable political situation and conducted
important reforms since 1993. These reforms have brought its first positive results since the second half of
1990s. With its strong and rapidly developing economy, today Azerbaijan became a leading country in the
South Caucasus and strong democracy in the southeastern Europe. Mentioning the Azerbaijani-Italian
relations, he said political relations between the two countries are developing in the high level. Underlining
the developed economic relations between the countries, Ambassador Sadigov said Italy became the
largest trade partner of Azerbaijan in the past five years. Reminding about the celebration of 150th
anniversary of uniting Italy in Rome two days later, Vagif Sadigov said Azerbaijani people shared
happiness of the friendly Italian people and at the invitation of Italian President Giorgio Napolitano,
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev will join the anniversary events in Rome. Azerbaijani music was played
at the event and then the guests received books and brochures containing information about Azerbaijan.

20th anniversary of restoration of state independence of Azerbaijan marked in Estonia Tallinn. The
Tallinn-based Azerbaijani culture center "Aidan" organized a ceremony dedicated to the 20th anniversary of
the restoration of state independence of Azerbaijan. The event was held at the City Hall of the Estonia’s
capital. Former president of Estonia Arnold Rüütel, MPs, representatives of diplomatic corps, the
Azerbaijani community, state officials, businessmen and media representatives attended the event.
Member of Estonian parliament, Chairman of parliamentary friendship group of AzerbaijanEstonia Eldar
Efendiyev welcomed the participants. Congratulating the participants on the 20th anniversary of regaining
independence, the ViceChancellor of the Ministry of Culture of Estonia on cultural diversity and external
relations Anne-Lee Reimaa emphasized that the Azerbaijani community is one of the most organized ones
in Estonia. In his speech, Vice Mayor of Tallinn Kylvartu Michael said that Azerbaijan is far from Estonia,
but "this country is not stranger to us." “Stories are similar, at the end of the last century, 20 years ago, our
country also gained independence,” he said. The evening also featured Azerbaijani music, performed by
Estonian musicians. The guests also tried the delicious cuisine of Azerbaijan. The 20th anniversary of the
restoration of Azerbaijan’s state independence was also marked in Canada, Bulgaria, Sweden and other
countries

Poland hosts events marking 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s independence (October 19, 2011)
Events initiated by Azerbaijan Embassies in Poland and Hungary to mark 20th anniversary of
Azerbaijan’s independence were organized in Toruń, Poland. Azerbaijan ambassadors Hasan Hasanov
and Vilayat Guliyev attended the ceremony in Nicolaus Copernicus University and opening ceremony of
new building of humanitarian sciences` department. The cooperation issues on educational and science
fields were discussed in the meeting with university`s rector Andrzej Radzimiński and members of Senate
of the university. A book “From the heritage of the Azerbaijani political emigration in Poland” by former
Azerbaijani ambassador to this country, now to Hungary Vilayat Guliyev published in the Polish publishing
house “Adam Marszalek” was represented. President of the publishing house Adam Marszałek, rector of
Nicolaus Copernicus University Andrzej Radzimiński, professors of the university, Hasanov and others
made speeches in the ceremony. The book includes articles and speeches by prominent Azerbaijanis -
Rasulzade, Mammadzade, Mir-Mehdiyev, Israfilbeyov and other political emigrants from Azerbaijan, who
lived in Poland in 1930s. Guliyev has written an extensive introduction to the book and gave an extensive
commentary about people, political processes, historical events described in the book. Information on the
activities of the Azerbaijani expatriates allows getting an idea of these people`s role in the political life of
Azerbaijan. This 600-page book sheds light on the many unknown issues concerning the activities of
Azerbaijan Democratic Republic`s representatives and the Azerbaijani expatriates. The book also includes
photocopies of documents from the Polish archives and rare photos.

Saudi Arabia (October 19, 2011)
Azerbaijan`s Embassy in Saudi Arabia has arranged a celebratory event to mark the anniversary of
independence of the country. Opening the event, Ambassador Tofig Abdullayev highlighted the
accomplishments made in Azerbaijan over the past 20 years. The diplomat said in the early years of its
independence Azerbaijan faced serious problems, adding when national leader Heydar Aliyev came to
power again in 1993 he saved the country from crushing. He also added great progress was made in
Azerbaijan in all spheres under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev.

Germany (October 19, 2011)
The “Alm.az” Germany-Azerbaijan Friendship Society with support of the State Committee for Work
with Diaspora of Azerbaijan has organized an event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of independence in
Dresden. The event brought together representatives of the Coordination Center of Azerbaijanis in
Germany, members of the Russian, Jewish communities and officials of consulates of Kazakhstan,
Czechia, Lithuania, Latvia and Austria in Dresden. Head of the Coordination Center of Azerbaijanis in
Germany Samira Patzer - Ismayilova briefed the event participants on the history of the independence of
Azerbaijan. The participants also saw a documentary on Azerbaijan`s culture, historical monuments,
tourism potential. Berlin-based Turkish-Azerbaijan Union has organized a celebratory event to mark the
20th anniversary of restoration of Azerbaijan`s independence and 88th anniversary of founding of the
Republic of Turkey. Azerbaijan`s Ambassador to Germany Parviz Shahbazov and Turkish Council General
Mustafa Polat attended the event. The Ambassador spoke of the progress made in Azerbaijan over the
past 20 years. He also highly appreciated the fact that over these years Turkey had always supported
Azerbaijan. Shahbazov described the Turkey-Azerbaijan relationship as an example for the entire world.
The celebratory event was attended by Azerbaijani and Turkish businessmen, members of the Azerbaijani
and Turkish communities.

Shuster, Steve Cohen and Ms. Virginia Fox have stated that thanks to fruitful cooperation with Mr. Yashar
Aliyev, the number of the Working Group members has doubled. The Ambassador of Azerbaijan has
resolutely supported the position of his country during his mission, made efforts to strengthen and widen

U.S. Congresswoman congratulates Azerbaijan with special proclamation (October 17, 2016)
U.S. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez from California has signed a special proclamation
congratulating the Republic of Azerbaijan on the 25th anniversary of its Independence Day. Sent to
Azerbaijan’s Consulate General in Los Angeles, the proclamation reads: “On October 18, 1991 the people
of Azerbaijan restored their country’s freedom and independence establishing the Republic of Azerbaijan
and declaring it the successor to the Azerbaijan
Democratic Republic (1918-20) which was the first
secular parliamentary democracy in the Muslim world,
granting voting rights to women in 1919, for the first time
among Muslim nations”
The document further states: “Over the last twenty
five years, the Republic of Azerbaijan has consolidated
its freedom, sovereignty and independence, and has
become a staunch and strategic ally and the largest trade
partner of the United States of America in the critically
important South Caucasus region”.
The proclamation also notes that “the Republic of
Azerbaijan is internationally regarded as a successful
model for peaceful and harmonious coexistence of
Muslims, Christians and Jews”.
The document concludes by stressing that “every
year, millions of Azerbaijanis around the globe, including
tens of thousands in the U.S. and many in the State of
California observe October 18th as the Azerbaijan
Independence Day, and remember the contributions of
their forefathers to the spread of democracy in the regions of Caucasus, Central Asia and Middle East, as
well as celebrate the remarkable achievements made by the Republic of Azerbaijan as a free and
independent nation.”
The Hon. Juan Vargas, another U.S. Congressman from California, as well as California State
Senator Ben Allen and California State Assemblymember Richard Bloom have signed certificates of
recognition congratulating Azerbaijan on its Independence Day.

Nakhchivan hosts events on 25th anniversary of restoration of state independence (October 18, 2016)
Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic has hosted a series of events marking the 25th anniversary of the
restoration of Azerbaijan`s state independence.
Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Vasif Talibov visited
the Alley of Martyrs to pay tribute to "A Monument to a Mother", the graves of those who gave their lives in
the struggle for independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and a monument to Turkish soldiers
who came to the aid of Nakhchivan and were martyred in these lands in the fight against the Armenian
dashnaks in 1918-1920.
Vasif Talibov then laid flowers at the statue of Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev in the central
square in the city of Nakhchivan.
Then the event on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the restoration of state independence was
held at the National Flag Museum in the city.
Chairman of Nakhchivan Supreme Assembly Vasif Talibov addressed the event.
Chairman of Nakhchivan Supreme Assembly and the event participants then viewed exhibits which
were displayed at the Museum. The collection of the Museum features flags of ancient states in the territory
of Azerbaijan, including the Nakhchivan khanate.

October 18 proclaimed ‘Azerbaijan Independence Day’ in U.S. State of Montana (October 18, 2016)
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan’s independence, Governor
Steve Bullock of the U.S. State of Montana has proclaimed October 18, 2016 as “Azerbaijan Independence
Day” in Montana. The Governor sent a special
letter on this occasion to Azerbaijan’s Consul
General in Los Angeles Nasimi Aghayev. The
letter says: “I applaud the efforts of the
Azerbaijani people to restore and maintain the
freedom and independence in the region. For the
last twenty-five years, the Republic of Azerbaijan
has been regarded internationally as a
successful model of peaceful coexistence with
people from different religious and cultural
backgrounds. I am honored to acknowledge
October 18, 2016 as ‘’Azerbaijan Independence
Day” and I encourage all Montanans to join in this celebration.”
The Governor of the U.S. State of Nevada Brian Sandoval also congratulated Azerbaijan on its
Independence Day. Via a special certificate of recognition sent to Azerbaijan’s Consulate General in Los
Angeles, Governor Sandoval conveyed his best wishes on this momentous occasion.

State independence of Azerbaijan marked in Ankara (October 30, 2016)
An event marking 25th anniversary of restoration of Azerbaijan`s state independence has been held
in Ankara. The event was co-organized by Azerbaijan`s Embassy to Turkey, Federation of Turkish-Azerbaijan Association.
The event brought together employees of the embassy, public and art scientific figures of Turkey, representatives of NGOs, and the Media.
The event featured a demonstration of the documentary on restoration of state independence of Azerbaijan.
Ambassador Faig Bagirov highlighted the history of state independence. “Development strategy founded by national leader Heydar Aliyev today successfully continues by President Ilham Aliyev,” he added. The diplomat spoke about the reforms carried out in Azerbaijan across the last years, as well as results of the foreign and domestic policy.
Mr. Bagirov spoke about the importance of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipelines projects.
The participants were distributed “Heydar Aliyev”, “Ilham Aliyev” publications, as well as journal, brochures, magazines about Azerbaijan.

Paraguayan Parliament passes declaration on 25th anniversary of restoration of Azerbaijan’s independence

Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of
Paraguay has adopted a declaration on the 25th
anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan’s
independence at the initiative of head of the
friendship group with Azerbaijan Juan Ramirez.
Mr Ramirez hailed political and economic
independence, religious freedom in Azerbaijan,
adding the country was the first one in Muslim world to
give women voting rights.
Then the draft declaration signed by Juan
Ramirez and two other members of the friendship
group was adopted unanimously.

25th anniversary of restoration of Azerbaijan`s independence marked in Argentina (November 1, 2016)
Azerbaijan`s Embassy to Argentina has organized an event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of
restoration of Azerbaijan`s state independence.
Members of the Argentine National Congress, high
ranking officials, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Worship, foreign diplomatic corps, scientists,
businessmen and journalists participated in the event.
Azerbaijani ambassador Rashad Aslanov provided
an insight into the history of the country`s independence.
He said the first years of independence marked deep
political, economic and social crisis as well as Armenia`s
military aggression against Azerbaijan.
Aslanov said stability was restored in Azerbaijan
only when national leader Heydar Aliyev returned to
power in 1993.
He highlighted the internal and foreign policy of President Ilham Aliyev, the country`s achievements in
the oil and gas industry, international transportation projects, traditions of multiculturalism in Azerbaijan, as
well as relations between the two countries.
The event featured the screening of a promotional video on Azerbaijan, and the guests also tasted
Azerbaijani national dishes and sweets.

25th anniversary of restoration of Azerbaijan`s independence marked in Korea (November 3, 2016)
Azerbaijan`s Embassy to South Korea has organized an official reception on the occasion of the 25th
anniversary of restoration of the country`s state independence.
The event brought together Korean high ranking officials, heads of diplomatic missions,
representatives of large companies, higher education institutions and think tanks, public and political
figures. Addressing the event, Azerbaijani ambassador Ramzi Teymurov provided an insight into the
independence history of Azerbaijan. He hailed
Azerbaijan's achievements after the restoration
of independence and the country's development
path under the leadership of national leader
Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev.
Ambassador Teymurov described the first years
of independence as very hard times for the
county, saying Azerbaijan faced the occupation
of neighboring Armenia which resulted in the
invasion of Nagorno-Karabakh and seven
adjacent regions and in more than one million
Azerbaijanis` becoming refugees and IDPs. He
said that UN Security Council's four conflict-
related resolutions have not been implemented
so far.
The Azerbaijani diplomat also highlighed Azerbaijan's accomplishments under the leadership of
President Ilham Aliyev, saying with the launch of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas
pipelines Azerbaijan ensured the delivery of its oil and gas to world markets. Ambassador Teymurov hailed
the importance of TAP and TANAP projects in terms of transporting Azerbaijani gas to Europe, as well as
Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project which will play a key role in transit transportation between East and West.
Teymurov noted that Azerbaijan was hailed as a "model country" with its multicultural values, adding
representatives of different nationalities and religions have historically lived in an atmosphere of peace and
friendship in the country.
"Azerbaijan has become a venue for major international events and sports events in recent years," he
added.
The event then featured the screening of a footage on Azerbaijan's accomplishments in the years of
independence.
