Munera The Makings of a Priest – part 4. A seminarian earns a Masters in Divinity which is a priestly degree known as the M.Div. this degree is only given to those who study to become priests. While I was in the seminary we were encouraged, if capable, to get the secular degree too which is a Masters in Theology. This degree can centralize in Church His-tory, Systematic Theology (Dogmatic Theology), or Biblical Studies. I only needed a few classes and a seminar in Systematic Theology so I went for the Mas-ters in that field. What else does a Seminarian do and what is a typical day like? Each day is structured! Believe it or not West Point Academy based its schedule on the one from Saint Sulpice Seminary in Montreal, Quebec. My seminary schedule was: on Sundays we had Morning Prayer (Lauds) at 8:00 am, breakfast, Mass at 10:30 am, lunch, free time until Evening Prayer (Vespers) at 5:30 pm, dinner, Rosary, Rector’s Conference, Bless-ing of Holy Water and Night Prayer (Compline) at 9:00 pm. Monday thru Thursday: Morning Prayer at 6:45 am, Mass at 7:15 am, breakfast. Class times were, depend-ing on your schedule, 8:30 – 10:00 and 10:30 – 12:00 noon. Lunch was offered from 11:30 – 1:00 pm. On Monday evenings we had “Nave” the learning of chants and hymns followed by Evening Prayer at 5:30 pm. Some men might have an evening class from 7:30 – 9:00 pm. We had Night Prayer with Adoration on Monday nights and Eucharistic Adoration on Thurs-days followed by Evening Prayer and Benediction. Thursday evenings we would have a pub night were we could socialize and have pizza and beer. During free time we could make use of the gym on campus, study, write papers, or take a nap. Most classes re-quired a fifteen page paper and or weekly reflections or quizzes. Most mid terms and finals were hand writ-ten tests in essay style. Some professors did oral ex-ams. Grand Silence (lights out) was not kept in my seminary; in fact most nights I was writing papers until 1:00 in the morning! On Fridays we had “Formation Fridays” which con-sisted of breaking down in our own class and having training in things pertaining to your year such as learning the Breviary, Missal, and other Rituals. Priests would come in to speak to use and a yearly theme was set by the faculty for these talks. We would also have retreat days and guest bishops would come in to speak to us. After lunch on Fridays we were free until Saturday night, having to be back by 10:00 pm. I would usually return home to take care of my mom and set her up for the week ahead since she was handicapped.

More to come… Rev. Fr. Stephen A. Saffron
