Every year during Christmas, St. Simon Stock– St. Joseph Church offers a bag of food to those in need and low income in our neighborhood. We ask for your contribution in helping to do-nate can goods and other non-perishable items with adequate expiration dates.

If you wish to help, you can leave your donations in the parish office. We appreciate all generosity.

¿Qué nos pueden enseñar la economía y la productividad sobre el reino de los cielos? La histo-ria de Jesús sobre un hombre de negocios que abandona la ciudad y confía su dinero a sus trabajadores tenía mucho sentido para su audiencia. Los comerciantes y hombres de negocios adinerados a menudo tenían que viajar al extranjero y dejar el negocio a otros para que lo manejaran mientras ellos no esta-ban.

¿Por qué Jesús contó esta historia y qué nos puede enseñar? Bueno, nos dice algo sobre cómo Dios trata con nosotros, sus discípulos y siervos. La parábola habla primero de la confianza del Maes-tro en sus siervos. Mientras se va, les deja su dinero para que lo utilicen como mejor les parezca. Si bien no hubo condiciones, obviamente esto fue una prueba para ver si los trabajadores del Maestro se-rían laboriosos y confiables en el uso del dinero que se les confió. El maestro recompensa a los trabaja-dores y fieles y castiga a los que se quedan de brazos cruzados y no hacen nada con su dinero. La esen-cia de la parábola parece residir en la comprensión de la responsabilidad de los sirvientes. Cada siervo al que se le había confiado el dinero del amo era fiel hasta cierto punto. El sirviente que enterró el di-nero del amo fue un irresponsable.

¿Qué tienen que ver las monedas y la ley económica con el reino de Dios? El Señor confía a los súbditos de su reino dones y gracias y les da a sus súbditos la libertad de usarlos como mejor les parez-ca. Con cada don y talento, Dios da los medios (gracia y sabiduría) para usarlos de manera adecuada.

Como muestra la parábola de los talentos, Dios aborrece la indiferencia y una actitud que dice que no vale la pena intentarlo. Dios honra a quienes usan sus talentos y dones para hacer el bien. A los que son fieles incluso con un poco se les confía más. Pero los que descuidan o malgastan lo que Dios les ha confiado, perderán lo que tienen.

Nuestro evangelio nos recuerda que cada uno de nosotros ha sido dotado por Dios. Estamos lla-mados a usar los dones que Dios nos ha dado para construir el Reino de Dios.

Aquí hay una lección importante para nosotros. Nadie puede quedarse quieto por mucho tiempo en la vida cristiana. Todos tenemos que seguir usando nuestros dones y talentos para ayudar a otros y difundir la fe. O obtenemos más o perdemos lo que tenemos. O avanzamos hacia Dios o retrocedemos. Entonces, nuestro evangelio nos deja con una pregunta sobre la cual reflexionar esta semana: ¿Buscas servir a Dios con los dones, talentos y gracias que Él te ha dado?

¿Has escuchado las campanas en nuestro barrio? ¡Sospecho que sí! Aquellos de ustedes que han estado en la parroquia por un tiempo pueden recordar que alrededor de 1988 un miembro de la parro-quia (James Huvane) donó un sistema de campanas de carillón a la parroquia. ¡Me encantaba escuchar las campanas en ese entonces! Tuvimos campanas durante muchos años a partir de entonces. El viejo sistema que teníamos se extinguió hace varios años. Cuando regresé aquí hace poco más de un año y escuché el aumento del ruido en el vecindario, comencé a hacer planes para reemplazar el sistema anti-guo e instalar uno nuevo. Por supuesto, el sistema era mucho más caro y completamente digital. Final-mente tuvimos suficiente dinero para comprar un nuevo sistema y se instalaron la semana pasada.

En mis muchos viajes a Roma siempre disfruté escuchando las campanas de las muchas iglesias. Las campanas se han asociado con ritos religiosos y todavía se utilizan para convocar a las comunida-des para los servicios religiosos. Escucharás las campanas a partir de media hora antes de cada misa y durante el día hasta las 8 pm. Campanas utilizadas para conmemorar eventos importantes o días festi-vos durante el año litúrgico. La música de las campanas seguirá el calendario litúrgico. Creo que nues-tras campanas añaden un tono agradable al vecindario y, con suerte, serán un recordatorio de la presen-cia de Dios en nuestro vecindario y nos recuerden que siempre debemos tener a Dios en nuestros cora-zones.

El próximo fin de semana habrá una segunda colecta para la Campaña de Caridad y Desarrollo. El dinero recaudado se destina al apoyo de muchas de las obras de caridad de las Iglesias en todo el mundo. Sea lo más generoso posible.

What can economics and productivity teach us about the kingdom of heaven? Jesus' story about a businessman who leaves town and entrusts his money with his workers made perfect sense to his audience. Wealthy merchants and businessmen often had to travel abroad and leave the business to others to handle while they were gone.

Why did Jesus tell this story and what can it teach us? Well, it tells us something about how God deals with us, his disciples and servants. The parable speaks first of the Master's trust in his serv-ants. While he goes away he leaves them with his money to use as they think best. While there were no strings attached, this was obviously a test to see if the Master's workers would be industrious and reliable in their use of the money entrusted to them. The master rewards those who are industrious and faithful and he punishes those who sit by idly and who do nothing with his money. The essence of the parable seems to lie in the servants' understanding of responsibility. Each servant entrusted with the master's money was faithful up to a certain point. The servant who buried the master's mon-ey was irresponsible.

What do coins and the law of economics have to do with the kingdom of God? The Lord en-trusts the subjects of his kingdom with gifts and graces and he gives his subjects the freedom to use them as they think best. With each gift and talent, God gives the means (grace and wisdom) for using them in a fitting way.

As the parable of the talents shows, God abhors indifference and an attitude that says it's not worth trying. God honors those who use their talents and gifts for doing good. Those who are faithful with even a little are entrusted with more! But those who neglect or squander what God has entrusted to them will lose what they have.

Our gospel reminds us that each of us have been gifted by God. We are called to use our God given gifts to build up the Kingdom of God.

There is an important lesson here for us. No one can stand still for long in the Christian life. We all have to continue to use our gifts and talents to help others and to spread the faith. We either get more or we lose what we have. We either advance towards God or we slip back. So our gospel leaves us with a question to reflect upon this week: Do you seek to serve God with the gifts, talents, and graces he has given to you?

Have you heard the bells in our neighborhood? I suspect you have! Those of you who have been in the parish for a while may remember that back around 1988 a parishioner (James Huvane) donated a carillon bell system to the parish. I loved hearing the bells back then! We had bells for many years thereafter. The old system we had died out a number of years ago. When I returned here a little over a year ago and heard the increased noise in the neighborhood I started to make plans to replace the old system and install a new one. Of course the system was much more expensive and fully digital. We finally had enough money to get a new system and they were installed this past week.

On my many trips to Rome I always enjoyed hearing the bells from the many churches. Bells have been associated with religious rites, and are still used to call communities together for reli-gious services. You will hear the bells starting ½ hour before each mass and during the day until 8pm. Bells used to commemorate important events or feast days during the liturgical year. The mu-sic from the bells will follow the liturgical calendar. I think our bells add a nice tone to the neigh-borhood and hopefully will be a reminder to us of the presence of God in our neighborhood and re-mind us to always keep God in our hearts.

Next weekend there will be a second collection for the Campaign for Charity and Develop-ment. Money collected goes toward the support of many of the charitable works of the Church around the world. Please be as generous as possible.
