Dear Parents and Guardians, I hope that everyone enjoyed February Break and that students are refreshed and ready to continue the rigorous learning process that is in place at Rogers. The second semester is a critical period of time in which students will build on the learning that has already taken place and extend their knowledge and skills. There are many ways parents can support their child’s learning during the “soon to be spring.” · Ensure that your child maintains a good

attendance record. Students who arrive on time to school and attend every day will have a greater chance of achieving than students who are consistently late or absent. Children who are frequently absent or late miss out on many learning opportunities and have significant diffi-culty catching up with their classmates once they return to school. If you should have any questions about whether your child is too ill to attend school, please contact Mrs. Johnson, school nurse, to discuss the situation with her. Coming to school on time every day helps to es-tablish good habits and gives children an advantage in the learning process.

· Continue to monitor your child’s home-

work. Provide a quiet, comfortable place for your child to study.

· Check your child’s assignment book and determine what they are studying. Make a homework schedule and check to be sure that your child is studying every day. Explain concepts that your child doesn’t understand, but let him/ her do the actual work. Review your child’s assignments and show an interest in what he/she is doing. Finally, praise your child for his/her hard work. Display your child’s work at home.

· Come to every school event that you can.

This will demonstrate to your child that you are committed to their achievement and have an interest in what they are doing in school.

Communication with your child’s teacher(s) is especially important.

Attending parent/teacher conferences is one way to learn more about your child’s strengths and needs and how you can be supportive of their learning. Children are much more successful when parents and teachers work

together. Remember, when parents are involved in their children’s education, achievement increases and behavior improves. Whether it’s supporting your child during homework or participating in a school event, parents can make a difference! We look forward to working with you to ensure the success of every child! Thank you for your support. Sincerely,

Attention 6th Grade Parents Rogers 6th graders move up to our junior high school next year. We already are preparing by, among other things, making world language and music choices. Dake also has an orientation for PARENTS of our 6th graders, and you will receive an invitation let-ter from them. However, we wanted to give you a heads-up so you could save the date on your calendar.

Procedure For Reporting An Absence / Tardy

Absences from school for any reason should be reported by phone on the day of absence and each successive day the child is out of school. Please call the Health & Attendance Office at 336-3030 before 9 a.m. to report your child absent. Please leave your child’s name, his/her teacher’s name and the reason they are not attending. Please keep your child home from school until they have been fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. When your child returns to school a written note is required by law. If your child will be late for school for any reason, please also notify the Health & Attendance Office at 336-3030 prior to 9 a.m. When your child arrives at school, a written note is required. This procedure is used to make sure we know where your child is at all times. Calling the Attendance Line prior to 9 a.m. will help eliminate calls to parents. Also, we are required to have a written excuse on file for all student absences, tardi-ness or early dismissals as part of their permanent record.

We need pictures for the 6th

Grade Celebration of Students!

Parents – As we prepare for the end of the year celebrations, we need pictures for our slide show. If

you have a few pictures from 1st – 6

th grade, please send them in.

Digital pictures to: [email protected]

Hard copies: Place in an envelope, include student’s name and homeroom # and hand into the main

office. We will scan the pictures and return them to you as soon as we can.

We like to have one picture of each student. Please no baby pictures. They do not have to be from

school. They can be from outside of school activities as well.

Contact Colleen Vay with any questions. Thank you.

Art News March 2017

As the New Year continues, it is a perfect time for us to reflect upon and celebrate our artistic accomplishments. Fourth grade students are putting the finishing touches on their Bug Puzzle Prints. This type of foam printing involves carving deep lines into Styrofoam with a dull pencil. Then, printing ink is rolled on with a brayer and the image is transferred onto paper. Each student was able to print multiple times using colorful inks and paper. Dry prints were then cut up and arranged onto a base print to create the “puzzle” effect. Our fifth graders are putting the finishing touches on their Oaxaca Creature project. These whimsical creatures are inspired by the Oaxaca woodcarvings of Oaxaca, Mexico. We constructed them out of art scraps such as cardboard tubes, newspaper, bubble wrap, wire, and miles of tape. Next, we wrapped them in plaster craft. Finally, we painted them in brightly patterned motifs similar to the Oaxaca carvings seen in class. In sixth grade, we have finally finished our Steampunk Clay project. Steampunk is a style that incorpo-rates retro-futuristic inventions and technology inspired by 19th century industrial steam-powered machinery. Students created creatures or masks out of clay using the score, slip and blend technique of building with clay. Each creation was painted with black and metallic paint to give the illusion of aged metal. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you have about our art program here at Rogers Middle School. Mrs. Landt

Physical Education News

Students have been actively moving in Physical Education class this winter! In March, we will begin our Jump Rope unit. This unit will consist of students working individual-ly with a jump rope, working in groups with jump ropes or jump bands, and getting the opportunity to explore jump rope moves. Students will also participate in a basketball unit during March. This unit will consist of individual basketball skill work on dribbling, shooting, and defense followed by 3 on 3 gameplay. We will wrap up March with a Painless Dance unit that focuses on student movement and exploration. Overall, we encourage the students to actively participate in the activities that they love, be open to try some of the new activities being offered, continue to give their best effort, and show good sportsmanship to all!
