Meet African Americans who have made a difference!

Harriet Tubman

Born around 1820 in Dor-chester County, Maryland. A former slave, Tubman helped other slaves escape to freedom as a “conductor” of the Under-ground Railroad .

Barack Obama

He has served as President since January 2009. Before that, he was a U.S. Senator from Illinois for four years. He also served in the Illinois State Senate for eight years and worked as a lawyer. On January 20, 2009, history was made when Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States—and the first African Ameri-can President.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a man who worked for racial equal-ity and civil rights in the U.S. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. We celebrate Mar-tin Luther King day each year in January.

Jackie Robinson In 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play major league baseball. He was named Rookie of the Year that year and two years later he was the National League’s Most Valu-able Player. In 1962, Robinson became the first African Ameri-can to be inducted into the Base-ball Hall of Fame.

Principal’s Message The month of February has been filled with

many special days. We celebrated our 100th

day of school, sweets have been shared in

recognition of Valentine’s Day, and we

honor the birthdays of great Presidents

from our past. February is also the month

set aside to celebrate African American

History. We wish to give a big thank you

for all of the amazing art projects and re-

ports that were created by our wonderful

students in celebration of the achievements

of African Americans. And remember, our

diversity makes us stronger!

Congratulations! This month, we celebrated 100 days of school!

Barack Obama ha sido presidente desde enero de 2009. Antes de eso, él fue un sena-dor de Illinois durante cuatro años. El Dia del Presidente

Celebran en: tercer lunes de febrero

Hasta mediados de los 1970, el 22 de febrero, cumpleaños de George Washington, héroe de la guerra de la independencia y primer presidente de los Estados Unidos, fue un dia feriado nacional. Además, el 12 de febrero, cumpleaños de Abraham Lin-coln, el presidente durante la Guerra Civil (1861-1865), era un día festivo en la mayoría de los estados. En la década de 1970, el Congreso declaró que con el f in de honrar a todos los presidentes de los Estados Unidos, un dia solo, el día llamado Dia del Presidente, se celebraría el tercer Lunes de febrero. En muchos estados, sin embargo, el Dia del Presidente continúa siendo conocida como el cumpleaños de George Washington.

Mensaje del Director El mes de febrero se ha llenado con muchos

días especiales. Celebramos nuestro centésimo

día de escuela, dulces han sido compartidos en

reconocimiento del día de San Valentín, y hon-

ramos a los cumpleaños de los grandes presi-

dentes de nuestro pasado. Febrero también es

el mes para celebrar la historia afroamericana.

Queremos dar gracias a todos los proyectos de

arte increíbles y reportes que fueron creados

por nuestros estudiantes maravillosos en la

celebración de los logros de los afroes-

tadounidenses. Y recuerde, nuestra diversidad

nos hace más fuertes!
