President’s Report HAPPY EASTER!! HAPPY SPRING!!!

Spring is here—finally!! That means nicer rock hounding weather. That also

means that we have only 2 more months until our club show the first weekend

in June.

We still need volunteers for the show, so, if you can help, please sign up at the

next meeting. We are building 10 new show cases for the show. The first

Work Party is this Saturday April 3rd at Allen and Kandy Henneberry’s house.

Please call Allen with any questions @ 253-922-5089. We will be starting at

8am. The club will provide the hot dogs for lunch and it will be pot luck for

the side dishes and drinks. The second work party will be the following Satur-

day the 10th-same place and same time. We will have another on the 17th if

needed.

A BIG THANK YOU to Tony Johnson, Brett Lawrence and Mark Baumann

for their Safety and Equipment Demo. Lots of great information!! Thanks

guys!!

What a fun Field Trip on the 27th of March to the Elbe area for Fossils!! I t

was a very easy site to get some great specimens and the weather cooperated

too!! Thanks Mark Baumann for leading the field trip.

Show-n-Tell for the first meeting in April is “Free for All”. Bring your favor-

ites to show!! The second meeting is our Pot Luck and Auction. The auction is

always a lot of fun! Hope to see you there!!

The Hands On is April 17th. It will be opal cutting and wire wrapping.

There is a field trip April 17th also to Saddle Mountain for Petrified Wood.

Bring shovels and picks. See Tony Johnson or Randy Summers for details.

Tall Rock Tale by Jerry Fish

Last weekend Carrol and I went to the Olympic

peninsula. Just over the Hood Canal bridge we saw

some logging activity that caught our eye, and we

had to get some pictures (one attached). At last

night's PVGMC meeting, Mark was explaining the

next field trip (Morton area fossils) and said (or

close to) "If you can't find any here, you should

give up rockhounding". I thought this picture

would be good with this caption - "Well, Mark said

if I couldn't find one here I should give up rock-

hounding. I guess I better give up!" Jerry Fish,

Among the Stones

To the top of the ridge I walked that day, to look among the stones,

And take the rest God promised me, before I turned toward home.

As every stone revealed its heart, its secrets finally shared,

They pulled my thoughts so deep within, their beauty made me stare.

My place among such mysteries, that's what I've always sought.

The understanding, of such a gift, is something I've had not.

For all of life that's passed away, I know were mine has gone.

I spent it here, amid a garden, the sun had never shown.

I think my home will have to wait, another life to fill,

And I will stay among the rocks, my time can just stand still.

Don't cry for me, don't shed a tear, I've found another home.

I'll take the rest God promised me, out here among the stones.

Editor’s Report by Dana James NEW INTERACTIVE WEB SITE FOR CLUB MEMBERS Just a reminder that if you have requested to receive your newsletter via the internet you will need to go to the new web site at http://puyallupgemclub.ning.com/. The site is very user friendly with a place for you to upload your photos and write about your field trips and other rockhounding activities. The 2010 Roster is also updated as of April and is available on the web site under the tab “Files”. If you are not on the roster and you have paid your dues, please see Sandy Chilson our Treasurer and she will let me know.

I’ve had a request to start a new poem contest. So here is your chance to shine. You will have 2 months to get me your poem of choice and I’ll publish them in the newsletter for all to enjoy. The deadline will be May 31st. I’ve published one here by James Sawaya to get you started. You can see it on page 4 titled Among the Stones.

How To Corner by Dana James

Branch Dangle Earring (It does look like a tree branch doesn’t it?)

Supplies Needed:

• Gemstone, pearls, or what ever beads you want to use.

• 24” of 26 gauge wire (I used ster-ling but you could use craft wire)

• Ruler

• Wire cutters

• Needle Nose Pliers or Chain Nose Pliers

• Round Nose Pliers

• Earring Findings

Instructions:

1. Cut 2 pieces of wire 12” each

2. Insert bead on wire and fold in half with the bead at the bottom

3. Twist wires around bead 5 times

4. Add 2nd bead on one end wire, folding in half as indicated about ¼ to ½” away from the twisted wire

5. Twist wires until they meet at the center

6. Add 3rd bead on the other wire, folding in half as indicated about ¼ to ½” away and twist together

7. Add 5 twists to create the body of the earring

8. Add 2 more beads, one on each side like you did for bead 2 and 3

9. Twist the body wires 5 times

10. Create your second earring the same as the first stopping after step 7 to make sure they are the same length

11. Add your 3rd and 4th bead and your final body twists and measure again, make any adjustments as needed

12. Cut one wire off close to the twists on each earring

13. Make a wrapped loop at the top

14. Add your earring finding

15. Finished earring to enjoy

Hands On Activities for April 17th

For April the classes offered will be Opal Cutting, Beginning Silversmithing and A Ring for Every Finger

Opal Cutting: Class will be taught by Jerry Chilson. If you have opal that you would like to learn how to cut, this

would be the time to bring it and have Jerry help you with it.

Beginning Silversmithing: In March we had an Advanced class to learn this technique and now are ready to

teach the beginners. This is a simple sterling silver wire setting for cabachons. This class is limited due to the num-

ber of torches and firing bricks available.

A Ring for Every Finger: Class will be taught by Judy Lynn and Dana James. Come explore the various ways of

twisting wire to form rings.

American Federation of Mineralogical Societies If you haven’t checked out the AFMS web site there is a lot of good information on our hobby. If you

like to travel to other areas of the country then there are plenty of shows from other regions to take in.

Coming up in June is the CFMS/AFMS show. The NW Newsletter has all the information regarding this

show that will be held at the So. CA University of Health Sciences Campus in Whittier California. Be

sure to read all about it if you are planning on attending.

The Northwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies, Inc. is a member of the American Federation of Min-eralogical Societies. It was founded in 1938, and one of the original four founders of the AFMS in 1947. It encompasses the Northwest region of the United States, including Alaska and consists of about 70 member clubs with over 4400 total members.
