RNPW President

RNPW–A Different Kind of Networking Group

Develop your elevator speech, put business cards in a pocket for easy access, smile, approach people you don’t know, deliver your elevator speech, exchange cards, and repeat. That’s the way I learned to network for our business. Then I was invited to attend Rockford Network of Professional Women. The atmosphere seemed different. Women were doing more than my seven step process. They were “really” talking with each other. Conversations were about problem solving, sharing success stories and so much more. I met many new women from diverse vocations. Yes, I did receive some leads but that didn’t seem to be the focus.

As I became involved in RN, I discovered four women joined forces and started this group in 1981 with the goal of supporting other women. They had the purpose of assisting women attain leadership roles in the community but also supporting them in their personal and professional development. RN has ebbed and flowed over the years but continues to follow their lead in many ways. Our board has an ‘Appointments’ committee which seeks out open board positions; matches interested members; and assists members in seeking these positions. In the early years of our organization, it was determined we would give a scholarship to a nontraditional student assisting them in advancing their education in an accredited institution. We have a ‘Scholarship’ committee which facilitates this. With pride we have supported many amazing women. Last spring we held our first annual ‘Professional Development’ program “The Art of High Impact Communication” which was open to members and the greater community. Right now

is a great time to contact Libby Simms or Janna Becherer and volunteer to work on the committee for this springs event! In October we once again will collect gently used, professional women’s clothing for “Share Our Closet.” This project of the Rockford Women’s Club allows women to purchase professional clothing at a minimal price for an interview or getting back in the workforce.

Do I leave every RNPW meeting with a lead – no. Do I leave every meeting having learned something to improve myself or my business – yes. Come to the meetings and possibly even get involved in a committee.

I look forward to seeing you October 20, 11:30 am at Forest Hills Country Club for networking and exploring with Amy Ott, Deputy Director of the Greater Rockford Intl. Airport how “Change is Our Next Opportunity!” See you there!

Meet Our Board OfficersPresident: Jan Bowman is Co-owner of

TLC Construction, which builds additions and creates more comfortable, serviceable residences through remodeling. Marketing to promote TLC’s personal service and quality work as well as assisting customers in their selection of materials - flooring, cabinetry, plumbing accessories, etc. -

keeps Jan busy! As the new president of RNPW, Jan’s goal is to continue growing this unique networking group which together works to support women personally and professionally. In her spare time, Jan loves to get lost in a good novel; enjoys growing plants indoors and out; and relishes time with family.

Vice President: Kim Millhorn is a Senior Account Executive at WIFR TV, CBS in Rockford and has been with the company for 8 years. Previously, Kim was employed with various media entities in the Chicago suburbs, as well as North Dakota and Iowa and has over thirty years of experience in marketing and the broadcast industry. Kim

has enjoyed her 4 year membership with RNPW as a way to connect to the greater Rockford community thru the members that represent local not for profits and area business owners. She previously chaired the Program Committee. Her goal this year is to support the current President, Jan Bowman and to assist with the planning of the Professional Development Day next spring. Her personal goal is to help grow the membership by inviting a different guest to each meeting.

Secretary: Darlene Riddle is an Account Manager with Target Commercial Interiors. She consults with business, healthcare and education clients to help their space work for them. Darlene is active in church and spends most vacations visiting children in Austin and Wichita. She loves to read and listens to books on tape in the car, and

is looking forward to her 5th year at RNPW. Darlene feels RNPW offers her the opportunity to meet women she would not have otherwise known and admire the diverse activism in the community.

Past President: Lindsey Gregg, Owner of PEAK Medical Home Care Services. “Even though I’ve always been an independent worker, I’ve been a “collaborator” throughout my career. How natural then to fit into an organization whose mission is to support other women! I like nothing more than to connect people ‘who should know one

another’ or to get involved in helping an organization I believe in to promote its mission and events. I am so proud to belong to RNPW and have had the honor and pleasure to serve on committees, the Board and though that have made wonderful friendships along with the opportunity to promote PEAK Medical Home Care services. Fun, work and friendship. That’s what it’s all about to me.”

RNPW Members Can Share Their Closet

For the second year RNPW will collect gently used clothing to donate to “Sharing our Closet.” Bring your clothing to our October luncheon meeting for collection. Clothing will be on sale at the Loves Park location November 1st benefiting women with limited means to purchase “work wear.”

It is perfect timing to look through your closet for those things you aren’t using but are still in good shape. Bring your items to the October meeting. Nancy Hoffman, from Sharing our Closet will be on site to take the items.

It is one more way RNPW women help women.
