Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) was founded with a

simple yet powerful message in mind – healing happens faster when

families are together. Since the first Ronald McDonald House opened

in 1974, more than 300 loving homes have been built around the

world to help keep families close in their greatest time of need.

IMAgINE THE EMoTIoNAL DIFFICuLTY oF HAvINg A SICK oR INjuRED CHILD IN THE HoSpITAL.

Now imagine how tough it would be to

persevere through this situation far away

from home while you seek the best care

possible for your child. This is where the

Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte (RMH)

steps in.

When families travel to Charlotte to receive

treatment for their child, from both near and

far, our loving home makes sure they can be

by their child’s side every step of the way.

The length of stay varies from a few days

to many months. The reasons for staying

range from a premature birth to a long and

drawn out battle with cancer. But the love

and healing shared as a result of this home

never waivers.

The success of the RMH of Charlotte lies

deep in the roots of our community. This

success is engrained in the families and

volunteers who have been touched by

a seriously ill child and feel “the call” to

help. It’s a result of a medical community

that recognizes the emotional strength of

keeping a family together. It’s deep seeded in

a business community that wants to provide

an amazing resource to our Queen City and

her residents. It’s sprung from the mothers,

fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and

others who have made generous gestures

of $5, $10, $20, and beyond. These are the

connections that have made our “home away

from home” a reality in Charlotte!

The Ronald McDonald House is sometimes

called “The House That Love Built” or “The

House with a Heart”. Are you sensing a

theme here? When families describe their

stay, the feeling of being surrounded by love

often comes out. Where does all this love

come from? It comes from you.

While fighting a down economy, weather

complications, and building delays, we kept

moving forward thanks to your love and

support and we now have a four-story home

to help families heal together. The City of

Charlotte and the community it fosters has

proven that we want and need this house.

None of this would be possible without all

of your loving support, and we want to take

this opportunity to thank each and every

one of you for your generosity, time, vision,

and dedication to helping us open our doors!

a Special Message

a Home built on loveIt all started as a dream coupled with the loving community of Charlotte. The vision for opening this Ronald McDonald House in our Queen City spans back nine years. In 2003, members of our medical community, families who had been through the experience of battling a child’s sickness or

community was contagious and quickly led to a day we will always remember.

on May 9, 2011, we opened our doors and began providing a loving home for families who have traveled to Charlotte to receive medical care for their child. The love of our community built a 35,000-square-foot home, equipped with 28 bedrooms, kitchen and dining room, teen room, children’s playroom, library, laundry room, and multi-purpose room.

our home isn’t just a roof over the heads of the families residing here, but a place of comfort, meditation, and healing during some of the darkest times of their lives.

Located just steps away from both Levine and Hemby Children’s Hospitals, the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte keeps families close to their child every step of their journey through sickness or injury.

injury in the past, and our McDonald’s co-op began discussions of bringing the house that love built to Charlotte. After years of careful planning and loving commitment from the various parties involved, we announced on october 1, 2006 at the Carolina panthers game that the RMH would become a reality.

From there, our Capital Campaign began and the Charlotte community immediately stepped up to the plate with generous donations of time, money, enthusiasm, and a joyful spirit. The passion from the

ACN, the world’s largest direct seller of tele-communications and essential services, has played an integral role in our success over the past several years. In 2008, ACN named the Ronald McDonald House as its global charity. The fit was as natural as they come.

ACN’s global presence across 23 countries along with their commit-ment to making a difference in the lives of others paired perfectly with our dedication to children and their families throughout the 51 countries in which RMH operates.

That same year, the company moved their world headquarters to Concord, North Carolina and immediately began working specifically with the RMH of Charlotte towards our goal of building a house. And what a blessing they have been.

our home would have not been possible without the generous $2M financial pledge from ACN along with their sponsorship of several of our key fundraising events. In addition to their monetary commitment, ACN has contributed to the RMH of Charlotte on several other levels. From donating every phone in our house to cooking dinner monthly for our families, ACN and their team keep the love flowing.

Home is where the heart is, and ACN’s heart is certainly in the right place. We have been extremely grateful for all that ACN has done and will continue to do for our House and other Ronald McDonald Houses throughout the world.

It’s no surprise that our network of volunteers, both corporate and individual, are vital players in keeping our house functioning. We currently have eight distinct volunteer programs that include the Meals Teams, Cookie Crews, Cleaning Teams, Activity Nights, pet Therapy, House operations, Teen volunteer Board, and Young professionals Society. Many of our volunteers belong to several of our programs.

Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another. - Erma Bombeck

The love of Many

“Through our House operations program alone, we have logged over 11,900 volunteer hours since May 2011. With the value of a volunteer per hour estimated at $21.00 (independentsector.org), our House operations team has contributed roughly $250,000 since our house opened.

our leadership programs, con-sisting of pet Therapy, House operations, Teen volunteer Board, and Young professionals Society are made possible thanks to the work of 518 volunteers.

The weekly volunteer cleaning crews contribute 240 service hours per month, and make sure our home is healthy and spotless. To keep our house smelling like a home and our

families well fed, our Meal Team and Cookie Crew add an additional 1,500 monthly service hours thanks to the love of 420 volunteers. These teams are made up of members from local businesses, colleges, churches, and civic groups.

volunteers of all ages con-tribute to our home, including the 40 high school juniors and seniors from local schools that make up our Teen volunteer Board and engage in leadership training, community service, event planning, and more.

our 4,200 yearly volunteers are the foundation of our house and provide hope and comfort to the families that call the RMH home.
