Welcome to the Riviera in which Opatija is the body, Lovran is the heart and Mošćenička Draga is the soul. The Opatija Riviera has been writing its history since the 12th century, from the times of skilled pirates and sailors. If you stop for a moment and close your eyes, almost always will you be able to feel the spirit of long ago times, hear the footsteps of the Austro-Hungarian gentlemen, the Emperor Franz Joseph, Isadora Duncan or a long list of world dignitaries who chose this gem of the Adriatic Sea as their vacation site. This encounter with the past is an unforgettable feeling here.

Developing alongside Opatija were the towns of Volosko, Ičići, Ika, Lovran, Medveja, Mošćenička Draga and Brseč, beautiful maritime towns located under the slopes of Učka Mountain, the greenest mountain on the Adriatic Sea.

The Opatija Riviera is lovely in the summer and magical in the winter, when it plays host to numerous congresses, conferences and seminars. In the warm summer months, you will be greeted by the clean sea, nice beaches and good entertainment, while in the winter you can walk along the 10 kilometre long waterfront, hike along forest trails or visit one of the health and wellness centres. Spring and fall are ideal for bicycling, hiking or just sightseeing all the sights described within this guide.

With its proximity to Slovenia, Austria and Italy, the Opatija Riviera has an advantage over all other tourism destinations. Just kilometres before Opatija is Preluk, an inlet where the Mediterranean Sea cuts deepes into central Europe, thus bringing the continental and Mediterranean climates together on the Riviera.

Due to the climate, the mild winters, bearable summers, constant air circulation, sea aerosols and the rich vegetation, Opatija and Lovran have developed as climatic rehabilitation centres. The average summer air temperature is 21.9°C and winter air temperature is 7°C, while the summer sea temperature climbs to 26°C. The winds blowing most frequently in Liburnia are the bura (northwesterly) and jugo (southerly) while in summer, the maestral (westerly) is common as is the morning tramontana (northerly), to the delight of windsurfers and sailors.

The most beautiful photographs of Opatija were taken while the strong jugo wind, which blows from land to sea, was blowing.

Due to the position of the Riviera and Učka Mountain which dominates over it, the sun sets earlier in the summer months, allowing for carefree time on the beaches. The Riviera averages about 2100 sunny hours per year. Of special note are the pleasant summer nights, when the temperature drops to about 17°C before dawn, ensuring a good night’s sleep.

RYA SHORT HISTORYTraces of history have been well preserved in this region. There are numerous

caves still to be explored on Učka Mountain and in its foothills, towards the settlements present today, are the remnants of stone cities, such as Knezgrad above Lovran, the oldest settlement mentioned in the Liburnia region. Old Lauriana was allegedly inhabited back in the times of the Romans as the residence of patrician Marcus Vispanius Agripa, and the first written traces date back to the 7th century. Nearby Medveja also has its legends, as it is said to have received its name from the sorceress Medeja who disembarked on the pebble beach upon returning with Jason and the Argonauts after obtaining the golden rune.

Opatija received its name from the Benedictine Abbey (Opatija) of St. Jacob which was first mentioned in 1453. This small church received its current appearance in 1506 as the Church of St. Jacob in the centre of town.

St. Jacob was proclaimed the patron saint of the city. In the 19th century, the neighbouring city of Rijeka experienced an economic boom, and the road network

was extended towards Opatija, thus marking the beginning of tourism development in 1844. Forty years after the construction of Villa Angiolina, in 1883, the Society of Southern Railroads from Vienna began to build the first tourism facility on the eastern coast of the Adriatic “Hotel Kvarner” in Opatija. Following this, the remaining hotels, villas and summer residences were erected, and Opatija became the favourite trendy tourism destination of the rich and famous, and royalty from around the world were not uncommon guests of the city.

UFRANZ JOSEPH, ISADORA DUNCAN AND YOUIn recent years, Opatija and its Riviera have been reminiscing of all the

distinguished guests and people who were in some way involved in the development of tourism in Opatija. Numerous plaques and sculptures have been erected in their honour, and these have enriched the town’s culture and stop time. The tales of romantic anguish, intrigue, scheming, political games, seeking artistic inspiration hide in every corner of Liburnia, and now you also have become an unavoidable part of these tales. It is impossible to list all the names of the famous guests; however, we must not omit Friedrich Schűler, the General Director of the Southern Railroad from Vienna and the initiator of the tourism development of the city. Dr. Julius Glax and Theodor Billroth deserve thanks for assisting in the development of health and rehabilitation tourism. Also deserving thanks are the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, the German Emperor Wilhelm, the Swedish-Norwegian King Oscar II, the Romanian royal couple Karol and Elizabeta, the composers Gustav Mahler and Giovanni Puccini, the author James Joyce, author of the novel “Quo vadis” and Noble prize winner Henryk Sienkiewicz, the Russian novelist Anton Pavlovich Chekhov and the popular dancer Isadora Duncan who found inspiration for her dance moves from the Opatija palms, with their leaves fluttering in the wind.

SPECIAL EVENTS AND CONGRESSESThe Opatija Riviera is alive 365 days a year, for if you were to add up all

the special events and congresses held here, it would amount to one event per day. Diverse programs are held in July and August in Opatija, called the Cultural Summer, as well as in Lovran and Kastav, only a fifteen minute drive away. Rijeka is well known for hosting the traditional Carnival every February. At the same time, Opatija organizes the Children’s Carnival Parade, the International Day of Carnival and the unique ball bearing race which has now celebrated its 25th birthday. Matulji is host to the Bell Ringer’s Festival, which includes remnants of pagan customs. Lovran also hosts a great Carnival parade and at the end of the folly, Mošćenička Draga builds a twenty metre high rocket which the town tries each year to “launch” to the moon with a fantastic fireworks display. Competitions for Miss Croatia, Alpe-Adria or Universe are frequently held here, and we must not forget the numerous competitions among hair stylists, chefs and barmen, cosmetic and esoteric fairs, dog exhibitions and numerous sporting events, such as sailing regattas, auto races, paragliding and hang-gliding competitions. There is also the Master’s Tennis Tournament of the Istrian Riviera in Ičići, which carries points for the ATP standings.

Virtually every hotel on the Riviera offer congress facilities and modern audio and video equipment. Congress hall capacity ranges from 550 seats in the Grand Hotel Adriatic to 750 at the Hotel Ambassador, and the possibility is available of organizing small gatherings and conferences in the villas of Lovran.

GAST

RONO

MYGASTRONOMYThe spirit of times gone by is coming back into fashion in gastronomy. Long

ago, people were fishermen, cattle-breeders, wine-makers and olive growers, and their daily nutrition depended on the harvest of grapes, olives and the riches of the sea. The Adriatic Sea is known far and wide for its delicious fish, from the noble white fish to the very healthy blue fish. Here fish is prepared in the simplest way, to ensure that the aroma and flavour of the sea dominate.

In one of the numerous restaurants on the Opatija Riviera, try the gilthead, sea bass, john dory, dentex, hake, surmullet, grouper, cuttlefish, squid, octopus, sardines, mackerel and tuna and the unforgettably sumptuous prawns, shrimp and various shellfish. Olive oil is the basis of Mediterranean cuisine, and our ancestors believed the oil to be sacred. Maritime herbs such as bay leaf and rosemary enrich numerous dishes. In the spring months, try the lamb from the Kvarner islands and nearby Brseč, meat of exceptionally high quality and flavour as the lambs feed only on healthy aromatic herbs and lick salt off the rocks.

Page 11: Riviera Opatija Info 2013

GAST

RONO

MYA speciality of the cuisine here is the seasonal character given by the fruits of the region, such as asparagus, chestnuts and cherries. Lovran is well known for its gastronomy manifestations such as the “Asparagus Festival” in April, “Cherry Days” in June and the “Chestnut Festival” in October. Caterers from around the Riviera come together at these festivals to create a wide palette of creative and delicious dishes from this seasonal produce. Nor should you pass up the opportunity to try the homemade brandies made with herbs or honey, which every host will be happy to offer his guests. Liburnian honey is a high quality product, made from chestnut, linden, sage and locust tree nectar.

UČKA NATURE PARKIf you are looking to experience one of the most beautiful panoramas in

this part of Europe, then you simply must visit Učka Mountain and climb up to its highest peak, Vojak (1401 m) and its stone tower-viewing point. On a clear day, you can see Istria, Kvarner and the central Dalmatian islands, Gorski Kotar, the peaks of the Italian Alps and Venice You can reach Vojak in only a few hours along the numerous hiking trails leading upwards from the towns of the Liburnia Riviera, and considering that the trails lead you through lovely and botanically valuable beech forests, you will find refreshing shade here in even the hot summer months. Of special note is the endemic Učka bellflower, which grows nowhere else in the world but on Učka Mountain. Mammals in the park include deer, roe-deer, wild boar, badger, marten and field mouse, while bear are found in the northern sections of the park. Almost one hundred species of birds have been recorded in the park, the most attractive being the Griffon vulture, a virtually extinct bird of prey in Europe which still happily lands on the cliffs of Učka Mountain.

In addition to the geomorphological nature monument Vela Draga, well known for its limestone columns tens of metres in height, there are almost 200 caves within the boundaries of Učka Nature Park. Many are home to valuable cave fauna, and many are the sites of palaeontology or archaeology finds. The torrential waterfalls of Učka which flow in periods of heavy rain are particularly interesting to see, and together with the numerous springs and pools make up the hydrological picture of Učka, valuable not only in the biological but also in the economic sense.

tive outing in nature are the numerous possibilities for recreation, from light hiking to demanding free climbing, mountaineering or spelunking. If we add to that the many mountain biking trails and the hang-gliding and parasailing sites, then the invitation to visit Učka Nature Park will be all the more enticing.

LUNG

OMAR

ELUNGOMARELungomare is a 10-kilometre-long coastal promenade connecting five resorts

on the Opatija Riviera: Volosko, Opatija, Ičići, Ika, and Lovran. The construction of the promenade began at the end of the 19th century, at the time when Opatija was becoming a renowned holiday resort. The first part of the promenade from Volosko to Slatina was finished in 1889, the same year when Opatija was officially declared a climatic health resort. Lungomare was completed in 1911, when it was connected to the coastal promenade in Lovran.

The construction was initiated by the Society for embellishment of Opatija (Abbazianer Verschönerungsverein).

The promenade winds over a series of picturesque coves offering plenty of relaxing, inspiring sights.

Lungomare is a must-see attraction on the Opatija Riviera to which you will surely return many times.

TRAI

CARMEN SYLVA WALKING TRAILThis walking trail was named after Queen Elisabeth of Romania, wife of the

Romanian king Carol I. She was a musician, painter and writer, also known by her literary name of Carmen Sylva. The Romanian royal couple first visited Opatija in 1896 and continued to do so until Carol’s death in 1914

One day, the king got lost during his daily horse ride in the woods somewhere beneath Veprinac. That made him quite furious, so next morning he went straight to the district principal, Baron Arthur von Schmidt-Zabiérow, and asked why the paths were not better maintained and marked. When the cunning Zabiérow confidentially explained that there just wasn’t the money, Carol gallantly produced a rather large amount necessary to deal with the matter. The money was well spent, and the construction of the footpath was completed in 1901.

The belvedere on Queen Elisabeth’s Rock is locally known as Mala fortica. The plaque with the inscription Carmen Sylva Ruhe can be found above a stone bench beneath the belvedere.

VOLOSKOThis authentic fishing village of old narrow houses and two lighthouses was

first mentioned in 1543, but is unquestionably older. Only one kilometre from the centre of Opatija, come and experience the unforgettable maritime feeling. Fishing nets hang in the picturesque small port Mandrać and the beautiful sounds of a cappella singing groups are frequently heard in the early evening hours in the exceptional seafood restaurants. At the end of July, the Mandrać painting competition is held, and the chimneys of the Volosko homes are a common motif for many artists.

OPATIJA “Old dame”, “Pearl of the Adriatic”, “Queen of Tourism” these are but a few

of the names given to this city, which celebrated its 160th anniversary of tourism tradition in 2004. Its beauty and elegance are passed on to each guest, and many tourists return to Opatija every year for their entire lives, claiming that they simply feel wonderful in the city. Every year, the quality of over twenty hotels facilities is raised a notch and soon this will be the city with the highest overall category of hotels on the Croatian Adriatic.

CHURCH OF ST. JACOB - This church was built in about 1420 as a colony for the Benedictine monks. This abbey (Opatija) later gave its name to the city, however, very little has remained of its original appearance, as it was adapted in 1506, renovated at the end of the 18th century and expanded in the 1930s. A copy of the relief “Pieta”, depicting the dying Christ with his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene, by the esteemed Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović, is held in the church.

MADONNINA - One of symbols of Opatija, the Girl with the Seagull, the work of academic sculptor Zvonko Car was put up in 1956 in the place of the Madonna sculpture. A copy of the Madonnina sculpture now stands before the Church of St. Jacob. The original statute of the sorrowful Mother of God, the work of the master Rathausky from Graz, once stood on the rock by the sea in memory of Arthur Kes-selstadt, who died at sea in 1891. After the sea damaged the sculpture in 1951, it was restored and permanently stored in 1996 and a copy was put up before the parish church.

VILLA ANGIOLINA - This building, which marked the beginning of tourism in Opatija, was constructed in 1844 and fully renovated in 2000. Its first owner was Rijeka patrician Ignacio Ritter Scarpa, who named the villa after his wife. Tourists can view the richly decorated hall with its painted ceiling, where numerous social events, concerts and romantic weddings are held.

PARK ANGIOLINA - This park is a true horticultural monument, with about 150 plant species from all corners of the world. The park was made from 1845 to 1860 when unusual plants from Japan, South America, Australia and China were planted here. At the end of the 19th century, Viennese architect Carl Schubert gave VILLLA ANGIOLINA

OPATIJAthe park its current appearance. In addition to various species of palm, bamboo, banana, cedar, the camellia (Camellia japonica) brought here from the Philippines has been given a position of honour and has since become one of the symbols of Opatija. The beautiful red, pink and white blossoms delight guests from December to April. In one part of the park, there are the remains of a stalagmite about 9300 years old.

THE ‘JURAJ ŠPORER’ ARTISTIC PAVILION - This pavilion was formerly an Austro-Hungarian sweets shop, built in about 1900. It was fully renovated in 2003 in the aim of creating a high quality exhibition space and hall for cultural manifestations. The pavilion carries the name of the man who in 1859 initiated the establishment of the Society for the Building of Opatija which advocated the development of the city as a bathing area and a natural health resort.

CHURCH OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF MARY - This interesting neo-Romanesque triple nave structure with its recognisable green dome dates back to 1906. The construction was begun by the Austrians according to the project by Karl Seidl, and was continued and completed by the Italians.

HOTEL ‘KVARNER’ - This was the first hotel in Opatija and was opened in 1884 and was the host to such esteemed guests as Franz Joseph and A.P. Chek-hov. Its well known ‘Crystal Hall’ with its stunning crystal chandeliers was added in 1913, and is the site of cultural and entertainment manifestations and various ceremonies.

LOVRANThis significant tourism destination began to develop at virtually the same time as Opatija.

This formerly maritime oriented town just 7 kilometres west of Opatija today is the boutique des-tination on the Riviera, with a number of exclusive and renovated villas dating back to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, such as the Villas Frappart, Astra, Eugenija, Magnolija and Blankenstein. In this exceptional crossing of past and present, and the coming together of the sea and mountains, the inland region behind Lovran is also developing. Here, rural tourism is nurtured, based on deli-cious local products such as chestnuts, asparagus and cherries. With the two city beaches Peharovo and Kvarner, there are a number of smaller beaches and suntanning areas, and the well-known Orthopaedic Clinic is situated in Lovran, reminding us of the tradition of health care tourism.

OLD TOWN CORE - The preserved town core with St. George’s Square, the town’s patron saint and the church of the same name take visitors back into the distant past. The church is an example of 14th century Gothic architecture and its frescos date back to the 15th century. The main attrac-tions of Lovran, once a well known maritime and trading city, include the still visible remnants of the city walls, the gates to the harbour which were once closed at night and the restored medieval tower which is now home to the Maritime Museum and the gallery of world renowned painter Charles Billich. The Church of St. George has a separate Romanesque bell tower, and its interior was painted in a specific artistic manner. In the lunettes of the main portal is the wooden relief of St. George killing the dragon and the head of the moustached man “Mustaccione” created in the 17th and 18th centuries respectively. Outside of the city walls, in the harbour, is the small Church of the Holy Trinity from the 13th century, the oldest church on the Riviera.

MOŠĆENIČKA DRAGAThe number of inhabitants in the winter, at just under 500, increases sev-

eralfold in the summer months, as this town lives for and from tourism. Just 15 kilometres from Opatija, this is the sight of one of the most beautiful pebble beaches on the Adriatic Sea. Even residents from the other maritime towns frequently travel the few kilometres to Mošćenička Draga to spend the day on this exceptional natural beach. Guests will be greeted with unforgettably warm hospitality in the two hotels, campsite and numerous private villas and homes. Mošćenička Draga is the ideal destination for those wanting to become better acquainted with their hosts while on vacation. Come to the port in the early morning to meet the fishing boats, like back in the days when this town developed as the harbour for nearby Mošćenice.

MOŠĆENICEOn the hill two kilometres above Mošćenička Draga lies Mošćenice at 173 me-

tres above sea level. This town is in the place of the historical settlement of the Illyrian tribe Liburnia, after which the entire region was named. Due to the breath-taking views over the entire Kvarner Bay, Mošćenice is a favourite excursion place for numerous tourists, as well as a starting point for hikers and mountaineers on their way up the hiking trails to the old, abandoned villages (995m) on Učka Mountain.

This ancient town is located only two kilometres from the sea, on a 173 me-tre-high cliff. Walking through its narrow streets and visiting museums saving the memories of the tradition of the area and the ancient olive mill will leave you with some unforgettable remembrances of your own.

The town ramparts and its gates, the coat of arms of the Habsburg family, the baroque church and town lodge are still here, watched over, bearing witness to those ancient times.

BRSEČ This is a medieval town of amazing stone beauty. Situated on 157 metre high

cliffs overlooking the sea, this town, 20 kilometres from Opatija, represents the end of the Liburnia Riviera. From Brseč, enjoy the views of the islands of Cres, Unije, Su-sak as well as of Učka Mountain’s southernmost peak Sisol (835m), which can be reached by hiking trails. The hundred residents of Brseč today guard the memories of the town’s rich history and tradition and of the many famous artists and priests that came from this town. Among them were Archbishop Josip UhaČ, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, and buried here in the Church of St. George. Brseč once lived from agriculture, wine-making, cattle-breeding and fishing and it is interesting to note that for the past one hundred years, this town has not had any illiteracy.

An autochthonous medieval settlement situated on a 157 metre-high cliff, with a view of the Cres Island and Vela Vrata of Kvarner. Inside the ramparts stand original houses and the parish church of St. George dating from the Middle Ages. The church was expanded in the 18th century and the ‘Golden Altars’ date from that time too. There is a walking path leading from Brseč towards the southernmost peak of Učka - Sisol (833 m above sea level).

MATULJI This municipality represents the green hills of Kvarner and is home to the

railway station that was built back in 1873. Its construction marked the beginning of tourism on the Opatija Riviera. Two border crossings, Rupa and Pasjak and the highway towards Trieste and Ljubljana connect Kvarner with Slovenia, Italy, Aus-tria and makes the entire region an easily accessible tourism destination. Today, Matulji has over eleven thousand residents in 23 settlements, and the increas-ing development of trades and crafts, despite the fact that the majority of the inhabitants are involved in tourism by renting out rooms and apartments in their homes. This is where Kvarner and the mountainous inland meet, thus ensuring a good night’s sleep for guests in the cool summer nights. Guests are invited to go bicycle riding, walking and hiking in Lisina Forest Park, Učka Mountain, Veprinac or nearby Kastav. The sea is less than 2 kilometres away.

KASTAVKastav is located at an elevation of 365 meters above sea level and offers

magnificent views of the Opatija Riviera and Kvarner Bay. The town is renowned for its eventful history, distinctive architecture and high-class gastronomy with a selection of excellent wines. Kastav is particularly interesting when it hosts some traditional events - the Kastav Summer of Culture, the Guitar Festival, the Bela nedeja festival of new wine, and the Carnival. The area’s beautiful and unspoiled nature continues to attract many day-trippers and sport enthusiast.

MUNICIPAL LOGGIA -This building designated for public gatherings was built in 1571. The town’s council held sessions there and if necessary, it served as a courtroom where those who violated legal regulations of Zakon grada Kastva od leta 1400. (The Law of the City of Kastav from 1400) were tried. Kastav’s Mu-nicipal Loggia is the biggest, and the best preserved in the Kvarner region.

VOLTICA -The entrance to the town nucleus is through the Voltica (the town’s gate) which was refurbished in 1731 during the Jesuit rule of Kastav. Above the baroque stone portal, a coat of arms of the Jesuit order was placed in 1769. In the past, firm wooden doors at the town entrance were closed at sunset and opened at sunrise.

LOKVINA - At the heart of the town is Lokvina, the main town square. The square was named after a pond in which rainwater for the town’s needs collect-ed. The people of Kastav drowned Captain Morelli in that very pond because he imposed more taxes on them than the Statute prescribed. The people of Kastav never revealed the names of the perpetrators.

KASTAVTHE PARISH CHURCH OF SAINT JELENA KRIŽARICA (HELENA THE CROSS

BEARER) - With its bell tower, it dominates the town. It was built on the hill 377m above sea. It has three naves today although it only had a single nave until the 17th century. In the 18th century, it was redecorated in the baroque style with lush interior (its most important parts being the Corinthian bench and kneeling desk, baptistery and the 17th century silver candlesticks). Very interesting are the drawings with the motif of The Ten Commandments illustrated above the pillars between the main and the side church nave. Alongside the church there is a 32m high bell tower built in 1724 with a stunning view that stretches over the Kvarner Bay and Mount Učka.

CREKVINA - In the place of the former Church of Saint Mary’s Assumption which was destroyed in devastating earthquakes in 1750 and in 1754, the Jesu-its, in the 18th century, started building a huge church of the same name which has never been confirmed as being finished. There are only a few tales about the construction of the church left. The remains of the church, which the people of Kastav named Crekvina, were turned into a promenade at the beginning of the 20th century from which one can take a walk starting from the former apse to the Loza woods and all the way to Lužina via a pathway all the way to Klana. Kastav is one of only a few towns from which the forest with three paths is just a step away.

ULFOR THE BODY AND SOUL The Opatija Riviera is ideal for rejuvenating the body and soul, especially in

the autumn, winter and spring months. Way back in 1889, Opatija was declared a health resort and it once had 12 sanatoria, while Lovran had 4. The climate of this region is a godsend for respiratory illnesses, anaemia and for those recovering from heart disease. In 1959, the special rehabilitation hospital Thalassotherapia, specialized in the treatment of heart, lung and rheumatic diseases, was estab-lished. The hospital has 250 beds in five buildings, and accommodation is avail-able in nearby hotels, the majority of which offer indoor swimming pools, fitness halls and wellness programs. Villa Dubrava is a new, modernly equipped hotel offering a range of medicinal programs, anti-stress programs and programs for weight loss, for osteoporosis, for managers In addition to numerous dental clin-ics, the Riviera also has orthopaedic clinics, aesthetic surgery studios, chiropractic centres, gynaecology and dermatology clinics, cosmetic salons and massage and relaxation parlours. Hotels offer weekend and weekly stress and tension release programs. Part of your recovery will be aided by the physicians and experts, while the rest is worth leaving up to nature, the clean air, green vegetation and the sea and sun. Reveal for yourself why the Riviera has been a favourite rehabilitation place for such a long time.

Asparagus, like mushrooms, are widely used in gastronomy and may be prepared in many different ways, the frittata being most popular. During the Asparagus Festival, many restaurants and taverns will offer meals featuring wild asparagus. >info: Lovran Tourism Office • 291 740 • [email protected] • www.tz-lovran.hr
