Founder ’s & Board of Direc tors Letter !
We began the year determined to build on our momentum from the extraordinary results of the inaugural Robotics Inspired Science Education (RiSE 2011). To state the obvious, 2012 was a tumultuous year for GRAF to raise funds. Albert Einstein once said “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” We believe he was telling us that even in the toughest environ-ments, hard work can pay off.
Despite this tough environment, RiSE 2012 delivered exceptional yearly growth with record number of students (500) both girls and boys participating in RiSE 2012. For GRAF, success has always involved a not-so-profound formula involving one-part inspiration and four-parts perspiration. Our success continues to be truly national (participants from all 10 regions).Of course, making RiSE even more accessible to students regardless of economic situation is an important priority. GRAF believes effective integration of technology into classroom instruction can result in higher levels of student achievement and technology creates oppor-tunities for people, organizations and nations to achieve their dreams. GRAF’s RiSE program focuses on; Creating Knowledge for Widespread Impact and Cultivating an Environment where Everyone Can Thrive.
Having largely slain the financial dragon, this was a year of milestones. RiSE 2012 received unprecedented media coverage from the international media BBC Focus on Africa TV with ongoing national coverage by JoyTV, Metro TV, ViaSat 1, TV3, Joy FM Super Morning Show, GBC Unique Radio, Daily Graphic and numerous Web publications. The continuing main-stream exposure is helping propel us toward our goal of making RiSE known and recognized around the nation. In another significant milestone, GRAF sent the first Ghanaian teams to the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2012 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In the pages that follow you will read firsthand inspiring stories from RiSE 2012 participants about the life-altering, game-changing, STEM career-molding and educational experience RiSE is.
To our unparalleled generous partners, sponsors, contributors, and dedicated volunteers we are greatly appreciative of your investment of funds and time. We do not take your support – or our continued success-for granted. Our results could not have been achieved without the performance of our highly talented leadership team, led by RiSE National Director Dr. Yaw Okraku-Yirenkyi and the GRAF board of directors.
In 2013 we will remain relentlessly focused on delivering even greater excitement at RiSE 2013 knowing the future belongs to the innovators and the youth.
To all, we extend our heartfelt thanks!
Regards

The Deputy Chief of Mission United States Embassy, Accra, Ghana,C.
Patricia (Pat) Alsup noted, “Not only is science, technology, engineering,
and math (STEM) education fun, but STEM is a key component to the
growth and expansion of Ghana’s economy.”
R ISE 2012Mission: “... connecting science theory with practice and hands-on learning experience to deliver tomorrow’s education to the Ghanaian youth of today.…” Dr. Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu
RISE 2012 EVENTS were held at Tamale, Kumasi, Accra and Cape Coast, it was a celebration of Science, Technology and Teamwork. In Tamale from the 5th to 4th of October at the Northern Regional Library,
with ten senior high schools from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions participating. The second event was held at Prempeh College in Kumasi from October 8th to October 9th with nine senior high schools from the Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions par-ticipating. The third event was held at Accra High School in Accra with seventeen schools from the Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta regions from the 10th to 11th of
October. The final event was held at Saint Augustine’s college in Cape Coast with eight senior high schools from Western, and Central regions from the 12th to 13th of October 2012.
A few months before RiSE 2012 teams were tasked with solving two real-world problems (AUTONOMOUS RESCUE CHALLENGE and Multi Grain Color Sorter Challenge) using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology to design a custom made autonomous robot to solve these problems. The two challenges are both inspira-tional and immensely practical. RiSE makes science exciting and showcases some of the most interesting things that technology can do.
The practical course complements traditional theoretical lectures by enabling:
A practical application of classroom curriculum
Inspires students by showing them that they have talents
Requires teamwork, leadership and problem solving skills
Fosters creativity, critical thinking, and innovation
Career-molding experience, students learn skills that aid in future job placement.
AUTONOMOUS RESCUE CHALLENGE
The RiSE 2012 Autonomous Rescue Challenge used the Australia RoboCup Junior Rescue course. The competition mirrors a real life-threatening situation where “a victim” is stuck in a mine tunnel. With the clock ticking, the robots compete by following a winding line on a field course to find the victim - artificial intelligence at its best! On the way the robot will encounter short cut opportunities that will challenge the most adroit programmer. After the robot finds the victim in the tunnel the robot pushes “the victim” to a green safe area. The team with the fast time over six rounds wins the competition.
MULTI GRAIN COLOR SORTER CHALLENGE
For food safety, the food industry employs high quality grain processing machinery to remove diseased grains with contaminants, foreign seeds and stones etc. In addition, to food safety, value is added to the product by grading the grains e.g. low protein grain, high protein grain etc. . RiSE 2012 invites you to build a robot to sort a cup full of four unique mixed Ghanaian grains (just to name a few e.g. kidney beans, large beans, cocoa beans, coffee beans, cola nuts, fruit berries, etc.) by colour into four bins in the fastest time possible. The size of each grain shall be between 8mm x 4mm x 3mm to 16mm x 8mm x 6mm (length x width x height).

RiSE 2012 IMPACT .... “RiSE helped my ability to think faster and more accurately under pressure and also has boosted my confidence. It has given me a new found love for math science and technology. It has also helped my teamwork skills. Ever since I started the RiSE program physics in school has been a walk in the park for me due to my practical application of math and science.”, Abdul-Wajid Tsigabaatia,
Opoku-Ware SHS, Second Year
01 ” In the beginning I thought science and math was all about medicine. But now with the help of RiSE I have understood a lot more. Now I want to do aerospace engi-neering in the University.” David Takal, St. Charles (Boys) , Second Year
02 “… RiSE has changed my way of thinking; meaning now I don’t see robots as magic but a real build-up object con-trolled with software. It is a great feeling … “ Emmanuel Walters-Andoh, Tarkwa Secondary, Second Year
03 ” Through RiSE, I have learnt to share ideas with people who don’t even under-stand me. I have also learnt to curb anger and frustration by avoiding the appor-tionment of blame when something goes wrong.” Kwame Osei-Agyepong, Opoku-Ware, Second Year
04 “Because of my RiSE experience I now always try to relate the theory I learn in school to practical everyday life.” Charlotte Ntim, Faith Montessori (GR -Co. Ed), Third Year
