Bentley Generals fans proud of Bentley Generals fans proud of win, sad to say goodbyewin, sad to say goodbye

Once again, The Bentley Generals have emerged the victorious winners of the Allan Cup.

This year the champi-onship game ended in an overtime thriller that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Derek Dickau was one of

those fans.Dickau, a longtime

Generals fan, pulled the team’s equipment trailer to Steinback, Manitoba, so he could watch the fi nals against South East Prairie Thunder fi rst hand.

“It was thrilling,” he said. “A little town like Bentley winning. That’s pretty awesome.”

The crowning moment for the Generals came with just over four minutes left in the fi rst overtime period when Carter Rigby’s shot on goal made its target.

Joan Dickau who watched most of the game on tele-vision at home marveled not only at the win, but at the similarities from an overtime championship

game seven years ago.“Same team, same town,

same score,” she said.Dickau said he person-

ally knows a lot of the players and is very proud of the team.

“They are a talented bunch of boys,” he said.

Both Derek and his wife Joan are sad that the Generals are moving

to Lacombe, but they do understand the reality of the economics of the sit-uation.

“I totally understand and I support the decision, but I don’t like it,” said Joan Dickau, who has taken tickets at the door for the Generals games and is aware of the dwindling crowds.

Thief cornered by police dogA 30-year-old thief who

claimed he needed a shower before he turned himself in as his reason for running from the po-

lice was cornered hiding in a shed by a RCMP dog.

Const. Carman Dutz of Rimbey RCMP said a call came in April 11 just after 8 a.m. that the per-son who had stolen an ATV at Strathmore was in the Rimbey area.

Dutz said a GPS indicat-ed the thief was holed up in a rural area northwest of Rimbey.

Dutz was one of the RCMP members who went looking for the criminal.

“When we got to the area we could hear a machine running in the bushes and through the use of high powered binoculars we could see a guy come out of the bushes. I yelled at him to stop but he looked in my direction and ran. He had no intention of comply-ing. He jumped into an-other stolen vehicle and attempted to escape by driving through a fence.”

Unfortunately for the thief, the stolen vehicle was out of gas and he

didn’t get too far.”“The escape was ill

planned,” said Dutz. “After the truck stopped, he bailed and ran.”

The search continued on foot and the man was fi nally cornered in the top of a shed by a police dog.

When he was caught by the RCMP, he said he was on his way to turn him-self in, but he wanted to have a shower fi rst.

Stephen Richmond was found to be in posses-sion of two trucks, an ATV, two trailers and a camper and charged ac-cordingly. He was also found to be in possession of fi rearms, contrary to the fi rearm prohibition ruling. There are also outstanding warrants against Richmond from Red Deer, Innisfail and Ponoka.

He was arrested on those warrants and is also facing the new fi re-arms and resisting arrest charges as well as the stolen property charges.

Counselling services continue despite lack of town fundingLeanne Evans,

Neighborhood Place and Rimbey Wellness co-ordi-nator, reminds the public that family counselling in Rimbey is still ongoing and a counsellor from Catholic Social Services comes to town every Tuesday.

While municipal funding has been cut for the ser-vice provided by Rimbey Community Wellness Association, Evans said the wellness group is hopeful to replace that funding through other sources.

“We were told the fund-ing was cut because soft services don’t fall under the mandate of the mu-

BY TREENA MIELKE nicipal government,” she said. “However, we are hoping not to have an in-terruption of services.”

Evans said the fami-ly councillor has been coming to Rimbey week-ly since the program was initiated and she has a steady stream of clients.

“A disruption in the ser-vices offered would be a huge detriment to these clients,” she said. “It takes a very large leap of faith to reach out and admit that you need help. I hope we are able to continue to support these courageous people in their quest for peace.”

In an earlier interview, Evans said the counsel-ing service has proved to

be very much needed in Rimbey.

“There are many peo-ple seeking assistance with mental health is-sues such as depression, anxiety, anger manage-ment, blended family is-sues, self-esteem, couple issues and assertiveness training. There are young people who struggle with trouble at home and at school,” she said.

The counsellor helps participants learn healthy strategies to deal with anger, bullying, teasing, violence, community and family confl ict.

Some people utilizing the program are referred by Alberta Mental Health and

Rimbey Victim Service Unit is supportive of this initiative as well.

Referrals also come from

the social worker at the Rimbey Junior Senior High School and West Country Outreach School.

Catholic Social Services has provided the services to Rimbey and area for a cost of approximately $15,000 annually.

“Great progress has been made to break down stig-matism and fear so that anyone that may fi nd himself or herself in need

of this service will access it,” she said.

Rimbey Victim Services and FCSS contribute $5,000 each towards the program.

Appointments can be made now with the fam-ily counsellor by calling Red Deer Catholic Social Service offi ce at 403-347-8844 and specifying that the appointments be made in Rimbey.

Well it looks like federal mar-ijuana legislation will be upon us next spring. Jane Philpott, Canada’s health minister, made the announcement on April 20th. I can have so much fun with this. First, the most oblivious. The announcement was made on four-twenty: apparently an important date with the canna-bis culture. Second, our health minister’s name will surely be turned into an Internet meme. Jane Philpott. This is just handing the Internet ammunition. Mary-Jane is phill’ed with pott. Well, that one isn’t too clever, but you can see what I’m getting after.

I would like to poke more fun at our health minister’s name in honour of four-twenty, but the legalization of weed is actually a pretty serious issue. It seems like all it takes is the feds to fl ip the switch and marijuana goes from illegal to legal. Boom. Just like that. One day smoking weed is frowned upon and the next day smoking weed is as innocent

as playing on the swing set at the park.

The legaliza-tion of marijuana is a cop out from the war on drugs. What if the fed-eral government legalized other criminal activities just because they weren’t winning the battle? What if say the feds decid-ed that pedophilia would one day just become legal? Granted the le-galization of weed and the hei-nous acts of pedophilia are two grossly different conversations; moreover, does our morality just switch over instantaneously when something goes from ille-gal to legal?

The prohibition of alcohol in the ’20s and early ’30s caused a bunch of problems in the U.S: bootlegging, criminal activity, etc.

Repealing the ban on alcohol seemed to patch up a lot of the problems the prohibition created, but then the bad guys just looked to other criminal means—the illegal sale of narcotics. If the feds take away a huge source of revenue from the black market, what takes its place? I don’t imagine

criminal organizations will pas-sively accept revenue loss.

Let’s not kid ourselves. There is a lot of money to be made from the legalization of marijuana. For a while a bucket of chicken was worth more than a barrel of oil. The feds are simply looking to lay a pipeline into other revenue pools. There might not be a phys-ical pot pipeline, but the taxes from each legal marijuana trans-

action will fi lter into the coffers at Parliament Hill.

Philpott has said the federal government will take a “compre-hensive, collaborative, and com-passionate” approach to drugs; and it “must have a fi rm scientifi c foundation in science.” Why not use this same approach to repair the socio-economic disparities, the psychological well-being, and the economic downturn that Canadians are enduring? I don’t think the real problems are being addressed with the legalization of marijuana. The new legislation is just going to keep the cogs of capitalism turning.

Those greenhouses don’t look like they are too cheap to operate: lighting, water and ventilation. All of the resources a grow-op needs are a strain on the climate. I don’t imagine the carbon foot print Canadian’s will leave will be any smaller after marihua-na is legalized. This whole issue seems to be driven by backwards thinking.

Legalization of marjuiana backwards thinking

Ice is out spring

comes early

News fl ashes are ongoing. They are here, there and everywhere.

The price of oil remains a slippery slope of uncer-tainty.

A police investigation is underway after a pas-senger plane approaching Heathrow Airport fl ew into what is believed to have been a drone.

Understandably, both those news fl ashes are cause for concern.

And so it goes.News on a global scale is

keeping print media, broad-cast media and social media alive and well.

But here at home, in good old central Alberta, the land

where wild roses go crazy in the spring, coloring roadside ditches with their shy pink blooms, there is also a news fl ash.

As of April 15, the ice went out in Sylvan Lake. And, ac-cording to records checked by historian Michael Dawe, it’s the earliest ever that has happened.

I believe that particular news fl ash, was like a pebble dropped into the lake before it gets interrupted with boat waves. It caused a ripple effect, as locals and lake visitors alike peered into the past trying to bring to recall their own memories of the lake, almost washed away by the sands of time.

I fl ip back over my own memories, trying to clamp down a time, a date, and a story to go with it, but I come to the sad realization, I don’t remember dates, only moments.

I remember one such moment.

I, an ill kept little kid with messy brown hair and bare feet, am perched in the front seat of an old ’49 Pontiac.

My dad is in the driver’s seat and our dog, a non-de-script breed of nuisance, is in the back.

Suddenly without warn-ing, there it is. A huge expanse of liquid blue, shimmering in the sunlight.

A few miles later, we were there.

Being at the lake seemed like a different world.

I remember the sun, warm on my hair, the hot, dry feel of sand between my toes and the creamy cool taste of ice cream, soft on my tongue.

I remember my dad saying the ice didn’t melt in Sylvan Lake. It only sank.

My dad was smart and knew about such things.

I didn’t question him, I simply believed him.

I still remember the pain-ful splash of the icy water on my poor tummy as I tried, unsuccessfully, to execute a graceful dive off the wooden pier.

I believe the common term for that particular dive was and probably still is, a

belly fl op.Fast forward about 15

years. Sitting in a ‘70 some-thing red Volkswagen, my husband in the driver’s seat, three kids in the back. We crest a hill on Hwy. 11 and there it is, the same huge expanse of liquid blue, shimmering in the sunlight.

I remember ice cream and sticky fi ngers. Excited shrieks and laughter. Sand pails and castles. And me, always in the background, admonishing the kids gen-tly and then not so gently when they became tiny specks in the water, “don’t go out too far. Stay where I can see you.”

They did, of course, go out too far. They grew up. And, always, they went out too far, to places far away and unknown to me.

But, always, thankfully they came back.

And so the summers came and the summers went.

Waterskiing and ham-burgers. Sunscreen and sandscastles.

Footprints in the sand. And as the ever-changing

tides of time keep on, keep-ing on, I learn nothing is as permanent as change.

But still, some things never change.

Sitting on the beach and savoring the taste of ice cream will remain now and forever a delicious waste of time.

The hot, dry feel of sand between your toes remains endlessly cool.

Watching the way the sun splinters into a mil-lion shards of light when it is refl ected off the water remains a timeless wonder.

And hearing the echo of a child’s laughter bouncing back over the waves is a lifetime guarantee that hap-piness can be contagious.

Does it get any better?I don’t think so!

Driving while suspended from doing so doesn’t pay off

Last Friday did not fall on the thirteenth of the month, but nonetheless, it turned out to be an un-lucky day for two men who

were driving vehicles on Hwy. 20 while their driver’s licenses were suspended.

Const. Carman Dutz from Rimbey RCMP reports that a member from the de-tachment noticed a vehicle

slowing down while trav-eling on Hwy. 20 north of Rimbey. He said the driver seemed to be having vehi-cle problems, so he pulled over to help out, but did a routine license plate check.

As it turned out, the owner of the vehicle, who also happened to be behind the wheel, turned out to have a suspended driver’s license.

While the offi cer was fi n-

ishing up the paperwork on this individual another ve-hicle passed that appeared to be suspicious. Once again, the offi cer’s suspi-cions were confi rmed and the driver of this vehicle was not only driving with a suspended license, he had outstanding warrants and was in possession of drugs.

Both vehicles were towed and the drivers charged ac-cordingly.

Const. Carman Dutz looks over a cheque and information that is expected to be fraudulent.

Treena Mielke Photo

Senior suspects she is target for fraud

A Rimbey senior who doesn’t want to be indentifi ed is convinced she has been tar-geted as a victim of fraud and warns other seniors to be aware of similar scams.

The senior picked up her mail last week and found, much to her surprise, a cheque for $20 from a company called Unifund. She said there was very little information attached to the cheque other than it was an overpayment.

However, she said she has never dealt with a company called Unifund, nor does she write cheques.

“It just came out of the blue. Where they got my name, I don’t know. I have no idea what it’s for.”

Const. Carman Dutz looked over the cheque and the accompanying informa-tion, and agreed it was probably a scam. He did some checking and could not

come up with information about that particular scam, but, nonetheless is quite sure, it is a way of acquiring information about the seniors’ bank account.

“There are lots of different frauds out there and they keep going on. If she had nothing to do with Unifund chances are good that’s what it is. Good for her for not cashing the cheque without checking fi rst.”

Dutz warns other seniors who get a cheque in the mail for no apparent rea-son it is a good idea to get it verifi ed.

“Do not deposit it. If you suspect a letter or cheque is fraudulent pleased report it.

To investigate the possibility of a fraud, Dutz suggests going to rcmp.gc.ca and clicking on scams and frauds for further information.

Meanwhile, he plans to keep the cheque the senior received from Unifund and do further investigation into the matter.

NDP provincial budget goes under fi reby Wildrose MLA

The Wildrose MLA for Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre sees the NDP budget as risky and ideological with no plan to get Alberta back on the straight and narrow path of fi scal responsibility.

While the Minister of Finance Joe Ceci said the 2016 budget includes cost saving measures such as reducing the number of agencies, boards and commissions, Jason Nixon says it is a reckless budget.

“The NDP are taking on a $10.4 billion dollar defi cit and a $58 billion dollar debit on the backs of Alberta taxpayers. This is the largest defi cit and debt in Alberta’s history and has already resulted in a credit (rating) downgrade from AAA to AA by crediting agencies.”

The carbon levy to be introduced in January of 2017 will be a key tool to help pay for a more diversifi ed economy. It is to be included in the price of all fuels that produce GHG emissions when combusted.

It will be applied to fuels at a rate of $20/tonne increas-

BY TREENA MIELKE ing in 2018 to $30/tonne.The carbon tax is to be included in the price of all fuels

that produce GHG emissions when combusted. These include transportation and heating fuels such as diesel, gasoline, natural gas and propane. It will not, however, be applied directly to consumer purchases of electricity.

The NDP government has stated it will not increase the carbon tax further until the economy is stronger and there are fewer economic unknowns federally.

Nixon said introducing a carbon tax during an eco-nomic downturn fl ies in the face of promises to help Albertans through their fi nancial woes.

The carbon tax will cost the typical Alberta household $1,000 dollars per year. Even those families who receive the rebate will still be out of pocket at least $700. This is the worst possible idea when we are facing an economic downturn and tens of thousands of Albertans are out of work.

Chances are our towns, villages, farms and small cities could be burned to the ground without the dedicated efforts of a group of community members. Who are they?

They are your neigh-bours, your friends, the local business owners, your husband, wife, sons or daughters. They have one thing in common—they are there to protect you when they answer the call—they are volunteer firefighters!

“I signed up with Canmore Fire and Rescue six years ago,” says Jason Lyon. “I thought it was the right thing to do—I believe in doing things for my community and my person-ality is that of a person who likes to get things done. I also like the excitement—every call I respond to is different.”

Like all volunteer fire-fighters, Jason spends most of his time doing a regular job. He is the publisher of the Rocky Mountain Outlook newspaper that serves the communities of Canmore, Exshaw, Banff and Lake Louise.

“I am fortunate that my employer, Great West Newspapers, supports my participation in the fire department. When a call comes in during work hours, I have to leave but I know the job of putting out the newspaper will get done.”

At first there was some concern of a potential conflict of a news person volunteering as a firefighter but Jason separates his role as newspaper publisher and firefighter. He does not involve himself in any newspaper reporting—his staff do that. “I keep my mouth shut and let the pro-fessional reporters do the investigative reporting,” he adds.

He recalls responding to the southern Alberta floods of 2013. “It was a major disaster and I had to be on the front lines. The staff at the Outlook responded by being the professionals they are and did the reporting and

got the newspaper out.”“When I go on a call my

family goes on a call,” adds Jason. Being a volunteer firefighter requires strong family support and commitment.

“Most often calls seem to come in during the evenings and at night. I may be watching a movie or playing soccer with my two kids and suddenly I am called away. My family has to support that and they do.”

Commitment is necessary. The firefighters in Canmore train for three hours every week. Jason has also vol-unteered for the special operations team—ice, rope, and swift water rescue—which takes another evening each month. He responds to about 100 calls each year—that averages one call every three days while the Canmore Department responds to over 600. The Canmore department assists in the area from Deadman Flats to the Banff Park area as well as Kananaskis and Spray Lakes.

Peter Krich, Camrose Fire Chief and President of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association, says that Jason is just the kind of individual that makes our communities safe. Peter has been leading the recruitment program of the AFCA for the past several years. “Almost every fire department has a recruitment challenge, so we developed a program to help. It has been an over-whelming success and has been adopted nationally by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs,” exclaims Peter.

There are approxi-mately 13,000 firefighters in Alberta. Of those about 11,000 are volunteers. The remaining are fully paid full-time firefighters usually working in the bigger cities. There are volunteers from 16 years of age (junior fire-fighters) to the renowned

94-year old Walter Thomas who began his volunteer firefighter career in 1947 (he no longer fights fires but serves as the historian for the Fort Saskatchewan Department).

“Without the 11,000 vol-unteers, our small and rural communities would be in severe difficulty in dealing with fires. All of us need to recognize that and say a big thank you to them. We can also, make a difference by volunteering too—help us answer the call!” concludes President Krich.

Nixon said the Wildrose party’s 12 point job action plan which includes put-ting the carbon tax on hold until an economic impact study can be completed will get Albertans working again.

The MLA noted that the NDP adopted the Wildrose’s plan of lower-ing the small business tax rate from three per cent to two per cent.

Finance Minister Joe Ceci confi rmed this year’s defi -cit will be $10.4 billion and said there are no plans to balance the books before 2024.

The plan is not good for Albertans, said Wildrose leader Brian Jean adding that the carbon tax “un-

continued from page 8 fairly targets working fam-ilies.”

“There is no effort to re-duce spending. Albertans were hoping for an end to risky NDP inexperience, a real plan on jobs and a vi-sion to get our budget back in balance, but instead this NDP government is only making things worse,” Jean said.
