    Stolen letters returnedJason Rasmussen read

an excerpt from one of the letters to the media who were present when the stolen mail was hand-ed over.

I was very glad to get your letter at last. I couldnt imagine what had happened to you, the letter said.

Rasmussen and his sis-ters appeared amazed that the long ago letters between their grandpa and a great-aunt were found.

It is absolutely amaz-ing, Rasmussen said. What are the odds?

The siblings explained that their grandpa, who served with the Canadian Army, Overseas; 40th Battery, 11th Field Regiment, talked about the war very little.

They said he lived alone after their grand-ma died and was a pri-vate man. In his later years he lived in a nurs-

ing home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He passed away in 1995.

He was a mysterious man, a cool bird, Jason said.

Trish Rasmussen said her grandpa lied about his age and joined the army when he was only 16, serving overseas when he was still a teenager.

The siblings scanned the letters while at the RCMP detachment, a play of emotion clearly visible on their faces.

He was a front gunner on the front lines. It is amazing he made it back at all, said Jason. I cant wait to read all of them.

He said the letters were verbal proof that his grandpa was loved and missed.

It will be pretty emo-tional, especially for our mom, he said. These letters show he was very caring, loving. The war had changed him. It would change anybody.

    The letters mysteriously

showed up in a car driv-en by 26-year-old Kaylyn Holmgren. The young woman has since been charged with 20 criminal code property and provin-cial traffi c offences. After a judicial interim release hearing, Holmgren was released from Rimbey Detachment on bail, and is scheduled to appear in court in Rimbey on Mar. 4, 2016.

Holmgren has also been charged with possession of a stolen fi rearm and other fi rearm offenses in-cluding a fi rearms prohi-bition order, unsafe trans-portation of a fi rearm for a purpose dangerous to public peace and pos-session of break in tools.Holmgren has been re-leased on bail.

Meanwhile RCMP con-tinue to investigate the matter and Const. Carman Dutz said it has not been determined how the mail got in the car.

That remains a mys-tery, he said.

Bowl for Kids Sake coming soonIts time once again to

Bowl for Kids Sake! Its almost time to slip

on the bowling shoes and raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rimbey at the fi fth an-nual Bowl for Kids Sake. The event, to be held on Sunday, March 6 at Strikers Alley, is sure to be fun for everyone and the money raised supports mentorships right here in Rimbey. Whether you de-cide to bowl with family, friends or staff, sponsor a bowler or a lane, donate food or prizes or volun-teer for part or the day, your efforts will be greatly appreciated.

At this point in the win-ter everyone needs to have some fun and the Mardi Gras theme adds excitement. As always, we will have lots of hourly and fundraising prizes, contests and games, and delicious snacks through-out the day donated by local restaurants and ca-terers.

Fundraising has been more challenging this year for very good rea-

son. The changes we have experienced in our local economy have put added pressure on local families and made the need for mentors even more crit-ical. We still want people to be aware that the most precious donation is their time.

    Growing up, kids are at

an impressionable stage. If they dont have many positive role models to guide them, they will look to whoever happens to be around. Sometimes those options are not very positive and may come from such questionable resources as television, video games and movies.

The kids who chose these role models the ones who just need the peace of mind and security of knowing that someone real is there for them.

We are fortunate to have about 40 mentorships each year in Rimbey but some children still wait too long to be matched.

The majority of our vol-unteers are women and they do a fantastic job. Some boys need a male infl uence and some con-versations can only hap-pen with another guy.

Volunteers are always surprised by how much they get back from their mentorships, and all they need to do is show up and be themselves. Most play games, cards, read or bake and everything needed is provided. The program helps teach kids

that the best things in life are free, and just an hour a week for one year, is a gift that a child will keep for a lifetime.

We are proud of our Big Brothers Big Sisters pro-gram and want it to con-tinue but we need your help.

Journey through days of week not

    easy

Im not sure what is the worst day of the week.

They always talk about blue Mondays like they are a bad thing, but then we get around to Friday and its like everyone is think-ing TGIF (thank goodness its Friday).

Thats how I felt last Friday.

On that day, it seemed like my brain could only absorb that one thought!

    TGIF.I dragged my sorry little

self home and gracefully retired to my bed even be-fore I could fall asleep on the couch while the open-

ing credits of some Netfl ix movie fl ashed on and off the screen.

I managed to rouse my-self Saturday with some semblance of my usual get up and go, simply because I am the grandma of a fu-ture NHL star and I had to make it to the arena by 9 a.m. to encourage him to keep skating really hard for about another 10 years and not to let that little girl in a pink helmet who is also seven and on his team keep hogging the puck.

Anyway, my get up and go got up and went as soon as the three 20 min-ute periods ended and my future NHL star and his mom and his brothers all went to Tim Hortons to be treated to those really de-licious donuts with icing and sprinkles.

Not me, of course. I sipped my black coffee mournfully mentally cal-culating how many calo-ries such a donut would carry inside its sinfully decorated self. I fi gured it out, but still my eyes were glued to the eye candy and I fi nally snuck a small bite of the babys donut. (what

    kind of grandma does that?)

By Sunday, I felt much better, so much better, so much more alive. I decided to go the gym.

I arrived early. It was only about 6:30 a.m. and here I was off to the gym just like the self-disciplined type person whom I know lives inside me somewhere. Wow! This is awesome, I think, momentarily forget-ting I was also the type of person who would steal part of a candy-coated donut from a baby.

I notice there is no one else at the gym and I feel good.

Pumped. I will have the whole gym to myself, I think gleefully. I like it when that happens.

I bound up the steps and get my access card ready to swipe. It was then

I looked in the glass door. There was nothing there.

The entire gym was gone. Apparently, it had moved.

What? I refuse to feel elated, instead choosing to feel mad. What kind of gym is this? Moving on me, when Im all ready to pump some iron.

My mad feeling stays with me for about two and a half seconds.

Actually, Im elated.I dont have to work out!

    Yeah! Someone moved the gym.

I can go home and drink coffee or, better yet, go back to bed.

I can hardly believe my luck.

As it so happened, the gym moved to a new loca-tion over the weekend and it is now back in full ser-vice, thank you very much.

    I was there this morn-

ing, grudgingly back to the old routine. Treadmill, weights, blah, blah, blah! Welcome to Monday.

I force myself to stay on the treadmill until I have burned 100 calories which seems to take until Tuesday. Today, however, as I was treading along on the treadmill, some dear, sweet lady came along and said, maam, did you know your shoelaces are untied? I dont want you to trip.

I mustered up some dig-nity and said, of course, I know, but I cant quit running or I will lose my calorie count and have to start over.

She looked at me in sym-pathy and shook her head and walked away and I reluctantly pressed stop.

Mondays! What a way to start the week!

Columnist celebrates fi rst year anniversary, maybe

This might be my one year anniversary as a columnist at the Rimbey Review. Im a little uncer-tain though. This column could be a month too early, or it could be pretty close based on nothing more that some of my recent refl ections. I think it was Steven Martin (the funny guy) that said something to the effect of: after doing

something long enough, you can say youve been doing it for ten years. Ironically, he was talking about playing the banjo and not comedy.

My complete career as a mechanic lasted a de-cade. I spent a few years as an apprentice and a few years with a ticket under my belt. For the purposes of a resume, time spent doing something counts for something. Career ep-ochs have this weird value attached to them, as if more time enhances the value of something. People feel similar about old cars and old books.

The time/value concept is arbitrary though. Whos to say that my one year anniversary as a columnist is a big success; maybe its not and the measure of success comes at thir-teen months rather than

twelve. Regardless of how long Ive been attached to my weekly homework as-signment for the Rimbey Review, I have written some good columns, some bad columns, and some noteworthy columns.

Ive done my best to pro-duce something unique and curious to read every week. Ill admit that Ive missed, forgotten, or sim-ply decided not to write a weekly column; and other times I may have been tangled up in a motorcycle mission, wrote complete garbage, and thankfully my editor quietly sends those e-mailed columns to the trash folder.

It was during the fall last year when I was at my grandfathers house during the same time the guy was over that mowed grandpas grass. The land-scaper asked me what it

was like writing for the paper. I may have been on a birdhouse building shift in grandpas garage when I was asked and was subse-quently completely taken by surprise. I didnt know how to answer what it was like. I was just happy that someone out there was reading my work.

There has been other times when people from town catch me at the post offi ce. Hey, I like the style of your writing, they say to me. Cool, Im glad some-one is reading my stuff, is often how I respond. I ran into an old acquaintance at the grocery store a few months ago. He stopped me in the aisle that has all the canned fi sh just to talk about a recent column I had wrote. It feels good to learn that my stuff is being read.

There is a gal I know

through Red Deer College, and she suggests I try to get a gig writing for a larg-er publication. Nah I said. I like writing for the Rimbey Review. Why? Its simple, I can write and submit about whatever is on my mind that week. If I got a spot writing in a larger paper, they would likely try to govern my columns direction and send me to Bower Ponds three times a year to write about the ducks.

A mutual friend through one of my old Rimbey Ford co-workers said he liked my writing because it is about my life. This guy said he didnt care about what colour someone in town painted their house. Maybe there is something intrinsically different about a years worth of my columns that I should proud of.

RCMP busy maintaining law and orderin Rimbey and district

Rimbey RCMP continue to deal with impaired driv-ers, illegal drugs and break-ins.

Const. Carman Dutz reported that a 55-year-old Bluffton woman is to appear in Rimbey Provincial Court on March 4 to face a drunk driving charge.

Susan Peters was traveling south on Hwy. 20 near Bentley at around 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 when the vehi-cle she was driving drifted into the northbound lane, sideswiping another vehicle.

Peters suffered minor injuries and was taken to Rimbey Hospital, but was later released.

The other driver was not injured.

Cost. Dutz said on Feb. 22, Rimbey RCMP stopped a vehicle in front of The Bargain Store after receiving a call about a suspected impaired driver.

Four people were arrested and later two females were charged in the incident.

Amber Achtemichuk, 39, from the Rimbey area was charged with possession of drugs and possession of stolen property.

Shayanne Ost, 23, from Balzac was charged with out-standing warrants, possession of stolen property in-cluding stolen mail, possession of break-in tools, pos-session of drugs and failing to comply with conditions.

Oost is now in jail and will appear in Rimbey Provincial Court on March 4.

Achtemichuk was released with the condition she will appear in Rimbey Provincial Court April 1.

Rimbey RCMP are on the look out for culprits who attempted to steal a truck at Frontline Compression Service on 44th Street on the night of Feb. 22. The cul-prits were unsuccessful and drove through a fence to get away.

That same night unknown individuals broke into Nikirks yard in an attempt to steal a vehicle, but were also unsuccessful.

Rimbey RCMP is encouraging anyone with any infor-mation on these or other crimes or impaired drivers to contact them or call Crime Stoppers Tips Line at 1-800-222-8477.

Town council plans to initiate a citizens on patrol program and has earmarked $5,000 to get it off the ground.

It is one of the higher priori-ties on our plate right now, said Coun. Brian Godlongton. There is enough interest in town to make it fl y and the funding is in place, so its just a matter of getting if off the ground.

Const. Carman Dutz said such a group would be benefi cial to the town.

COP is a group of concerned citizens who basically take ownership of their community. They are volunteers who watch for suspicious activities. Such a program is more eyes and ears with the same intent to report criminal or suspicious behaviour.

Dutz said he has suggested to interim CAO Donna Tona that individuals could receive feedback and training from the Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol.

It is a well established healthy group thats growing, he said.

The possibility of another group with a focus on com-munity safety was discussed last week at an Community Wellness Committee meeting.

Committee member Helen Coers said a group called Abundant Communities is being investigated.

It is more like Neighbourhood Watch, she said. It is citizen driven and there is no fi nances involved. It isnt going to cost the community.

Dutz said such a group which promotes being neighbourly and community awareness is helpful in reducing crime.

it seemed liked it would make a lot of sense and bring people together.

Citizen driven crime prevention programs on the

horizonBY TREENA MIELKEThe services of a family

counsellor in Rimbey are in danger of being discontinued unless more funding can be obtained.

At a Community Wellness Group meeting held recently, members learned the town had chopped funding for the program.

The program began in 2014 and since that time council has contributed $5,000 annually.

However, this year during the budgeting process, coun-cil agreed to discontinue the funding.

The Community Wellness Group, who identifi ed the need for the service several years ago, is looking for other options as they believe the counselling

service is very much needed in the community.

Were looking into other funding options or other ways of funding the program so there is no interruption of ser-vice, said Leanne Evans, facil-itator of Community Wellness Group.

Committee members agreed the service needs to continue if at all possible.

I feel very strongly that we need her here, said committee member Helen Coers.

I think she could be a full time person, added Annette Peck.

However, Coun. Brian Godlongton said council had decided to increase funding to FCSS and cut the funding for the counselling service.

I was not in favour, he said.

However, he noted that providing funding for the counselling service would mean taxes could increase by another mill rate.

The Catholic Social Services counsellor comes to Rimbey once a week and her services have been very well utilized. Funding had previously been supplied by the town, FCSS and Victim Services.

Highlights from Feb. 22 council meeting At its Feb. 22 meeting,

The resignation of Jackie Stratton and Gayle Rondeel from the Rimbey Business Sector Sustainability

    JESSIE CLARE KINLEY

Jessie Clare Burns was born in Homeglen, Alberta, to Robert William Amos Burns and Gertrude May (Stelfox) on November 27, 1931 and passed peacefully on February 23, 2016 at Foothills Hospital, Calgary. She attended school in Homeglen, Ponoka, Lacombe and Edmonton (University of Alberta). While a schoolteacher in Wolfville, she met Fred

Kinley, who she married on December 22, 1955. Four cherished children and a hardware store followed. Their retirement from Kinleys of Berwyn brought them to an unspoiled property in the foothills near Bentley and pets: Highland cattle, cats, deer, chickadees and Jackie the dog.Jessie was a woman ahead of her time in her commitment to conserve our resources and preserve Albertas natural environment. Those who knew her well will remember her voice, her ability to connect with young children, and love of and stewardship of the great outdoors.Jessie was pre-deceased by her parents, siblings Jim, Jack, Mary and Betty, and husband of almost 60 years, Fred (2015).She will live on in the hearts of children Marigold (Bob) of Edmonton, Myron of Bentley, Carillon of Vancouver and Trevor (Nancy) of Invermere and grandchildren Graham (Marianne) and Megan of Invermere, along with sisters in law Evie, Viola, Martha, Madalene, Louise and Zunny, and brothers in law Bob Smitty Smith and John Kinley, plus many beloved nieces and nephews. We will be thinking of her as she walks through the wildfl owers identifying birdcalls, or, perhaps, sings to Fred as he relaxes with a newspaper. The family thanks Dr. Bal and the staff of Foothills Hospital, Calgary, for their professional care of Mom and support of the family before she passed peacefully, two days after a stroke. The memorial service was held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 3 pm at Bentley United Church. Jessie will join Fred at Fairview Cemetery in Lacombe in the springtime.Condolences may be made by visiting www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca

A Rimbey developer who wants the town to change three lots from medium density to low density and eliminate a back alley on his property will have to go through the proper channels to make that happen.

Stan Cummings met with council on Feb. 22 to request council to change the zoning of the lots so there will be no need for a back alley.

I dont want to wait three or four months, he said. Putting in a back alley serves no pur-pose, he added.

Town planner Liz Armitage reminded council any decision they made during the council meeting would not be binding.

A change in a bylaw requires a fi rst reading, public hearing and second and third reading. Even if doesnt do the actu-al land use designation and

applies to have that clause removed, he will still have to go through the process.

Council agreed to accept the request as information and bring it forward to next council meeting on March 7 if an appli-cation is made.

A gentleman from the gallery at the council meeting said he didnt think the lots, which are located in proximity to the pro-posed seniors complex, would work as low density.

There will be a lot of cars and a lot of people and where are they going to park?

He said council shouldnt amend a bylaw just to suit one developer.

However, Armitage said such questions and comments can be discussed at a public hearing.

I think back alleys are very valuable and very necessary, added Helen Coers, who was also in the gallery.
