4 CUMMINGS CENTRE
GREETINGS FROM YOUR PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTORWe are pleased to present you with an all-new slate of courses and programs this fall as we continue to strive to meet the evolving needs of Montreal’s 50+ community.
We pride ourselves on being a members-first organization. It is the passion and the dedication of our members, coupled with the hard work of our staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors, that is the driving force of the Centre.
In keeping with our member-oriented approach, we have brought on our very first ombudsman. This will ensure that your feedback and concerns are addressed. We have also developed a brand-new website, making course registration that much easier. In addition, we are embarking on a strategic plan that will provide lasting direction.
You will notice that our Fall Sampler has been revamped and expanded. Instead of one single day of free programs and activities, there will be classes and free activities available to sample all throughout the week of September 5th. We invite you to take a tour of the building, meet our staff and volunteers, and experience a day in the life at the Cummings Centre.
We also hope to see you all on October 24th, for a soul-filled evening with Kim Richardson.
Thank you for your continued feedback. It is your comments that help make this Centre thrive and build for the future.
Best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Roz Wiener President of the Board of Directors
Pauline Grunberg, M.Ed Executive Director

CAPTURE EVERY MOMENTDEVELOP YOUR INTERESTSIn my younger years, I enjoyed taking pictures as a creative outlet but never had the chance to develop my skills. Now in retirement, I am enjoying learning all about the world of digital photography. With the small class sizes and excellent instructors, I am able to improve my technique and take wonderful candid shots of my grandson!

SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES
RELAY YOUR PASSION Ben Sperer has had quite a journey through life, from his early days in his native Turkey with the British embassy to his stint as an executive in the mining industry to the cre-ation of his own medical publishing company following his move to Canada in 1960. Sperer wants to impart his experiences to others.“I have had a very colourful career,” said Sperer, 96. “There are lots of things for me to talk about from my life and I want to share it with everyone. It’s important to give back to society what you took from it.”He has been giving classes at the Cummings Centre for the past 5 years on topics ranging from World War I and II to the Bolshevik Revolution and the Ottoman Empire. Sperer aims to make history jump off the page. “The people who take my classes tell me that I bring history to life for them,” said Sperer. “I don’t dwell on historical dates or specific historical figures. I describe history as if it were a movie that you can see.”In addition to teaching, Sperer takes courses at the Centre. It is a place with special meaning to him.“I meet my friends here and we have lunch together before going to our lectures. I feel very attached to the Cummings Centre.”

BRING BACK MEMORIESThere is so much joy in coming together and singing with people. We share a bond with everyone in the choir singing our favourites from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s bringing back so many memories. There is such a spirit of camaraderie, group solidarity and true community spirit. You don’t need to have a good voice or read music to join the choir- the goal is to have a good time!

AIM TO PLEASE “I lost my husband to cancer a year and a half ago. If I didn’t have this place, I could see myself going into a slump. I know when I get up in the morning, I need to get dressed, go to work and put a smile on my face. It is my job to build up the confidence of those in my class and get them to want to come here because they know they are going to have fun.”

MAURICE POLLACK FOUNDATION CENTRE FOR
ADAPTED PROGRAMSEveryone needs a helping hand when recovering from surgery or adjusting to life with a long-term condition. The Adapted Exercise Clinic is more than a rehab facility – it is a place where people with similar challenges exercise together, laugh together and share ideas. “There is a place for everyone at the Cummings Centre,” says Maria Fragapane, Program Manager. For over 15 years the Adapted Program participants have continued to train and improve whether from a stroke, progressive neuromuscular disorders (Parkinson’s disease, MS) or other health challenges. Successful rehabil-itation comes from exercising body and mind and the Cummings Centre provides so many opportunities to do just that. Unique offerings such as adapted boxing and sailing complement a full roster of innovative programming. Lecture series highlight relevant and timely topics and provide opportunities for exchange and outreach with the greater community. Volunteers complete the team. “We could not function without the invaluable collaboration of our volunteers,” says Stefani Novick, Program Manager. “They create a unique link of seniors helping seniors.”

TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR WORK Come rain or come shine, Leslie Vertes can be found on Friday mornings at the Cummings Centre’s Holocaust Survivor Assistance Office. He has volunteered there for the past 17 years, helping clients reclaim reparations. Vertes, a Holocaust survivor himself, takes great pride in assisting less fortunate survivors get by.“The compensation they receive makes a big difference,” said Vertes, 93. “They are able to improve their living standard and their quality of life. Many of them are poor, alone, and sick and need this monetary help desperately to pay for food and medicine.”Vertes works closely with the survivors, helping them fill out their applications clearly and in an easy-to-understand fashion. He also helps write letters and other correspondence on survivors' behalf in an attempt to receive compensation for them. “I do whatever I can to make their lives easier and better,” said Vertes.Since Vertes started volunteering in August of 2000, he has helped hundreds of clients recoup millions of dollars. Vertes is just doing his part in what he views as a reciprocal relationship.“The volunteers change the lives of seniors and the way they see the world, but they do the same for us. I, too, have a very different view of things now. I take great satisfaction in my work at Cummings.”

NEVER FORGETSHARE WITH OTHER SURVIVORSFor close to 19 years, I have been a part of the Drop-in Centre. We all have something in common even though each of us went through the Holocaust in very different ways. We do not dwell on the past, but rather learning about current affairs, listening to interesting lectures, enjoying being entertained and even exercising together. The members and staff are truly my extended family – we have to be grateful.
