2007/8 Chairman’s Message

RICS matrics has 4 key aims andhopes to help achieve these byusing its unique structure andworking Locally, Regionally andNationally within RICS as a whole:

■ Careers Promotion,

■ Student Member Recruitment & Conversion,

■ APC Support and Development &

■ Career Progression

At the heart of RICS matrics in the UK, is alocal structure based on over 30 local groups, who Inter-Professional networking events aswell as volunteering to attend careers events atschools and universities. Without the localgroups none of this would happen.

The benefits of RICS matrics not only includethe networking element which is always usefulon a day- to-day basis in the property industrybut also for students to get a closer insight intotheir chosen profession and for APC/ATCcandidates to meet other candidates or recentlyqualified surveyors which may not always beavailable at work.

RICS matrics is keen to encourage moremembers to volunteer to become APCAssessors. We are also keen to supportLionHeart, the benevolent fund for RICSmembers and their dependents, through the“Under 35’s Raising £35,000 Appeal”.

Our local groups feed into RICS Regional

Boards, onto RICS matrics UK Council andultimately Governing Council. Through thisstructure the concerns and ideas of RICSmatrics are able to be voiced to RICS as awhole and help shape the future of ourprofession.

During the past 12 months I have had theopportunity of travelling across the UKrepresenting RICS matrics, meeting lots ofRICS matrics members and I have feltimmensely proud to see how many dedicatedpeople are out there working together toachieve these common aims.

Through my ongoing involvement in RICSmatrics I have made excellent businesscontacts, strong friendships and found skillswhich are truly beneficial in my day to day workand continued progression as a CharteredSurveyor, and as such I highly recommendRICS matrics to you.

To find out more about what’s happening inyour local roup in the UK go to the events pageor contact your local Chairman go to the UKChairmen page, who you can also contact ifyou would like to volunteer to get involvedlocally with RICS matrics and help us achieveour 4 aims.

Chairman’s Challenge &Charity Round upDuring 2006/8 RICS matrics ran an appeal in aid of LionHeart: “Under35’s Raising £35,000” and this target was achieved on Friday 4 July, ahead of the 31 July 2008 end date.

The Appeal total currently stands at £38,596although we expect the final amount to reach£41,000. This has been achieved by themembers and local groups of RICS matricsworking together at specific charity events, sporting challenges, social and educational events.RICS matrics dinners and balls, which often

raise money for more than 1 charity, raisedalmost £25,000 for LionHeart alone as part ofthat Appeal and a further £43,000 for otherlocal and national charities, giving a combinedtotal of £68,000 raised at charity balls and dinners. The combined total for the Lionheart Appealand balls/dinners is £84,000 as shown below:

RICS matrics dinners andballs usually attract a goodmixture of surveyors and otherprofessionals and are a goodplace to network. They are alot of fun and usually raisemoney for charity. Dependingon the local group theattendance can range from100 – 500 guests althoughthe average is around 200.

Each event is the highlight ofthat local groups’ annualcalendar.

RICS matrics Annual Review 2007-08

As well as all the existing RICS matrics groups,2007/08 saw the introduction of three newgroups in Suffolk, South Wessex and Somerset.Berks, Oxon and Bucks also gained newenergy after the previous group disbanded.Although these groups are still very new andhave very little funding some really good ideasare being made and enthusiasm shown. A hugethanks and good luck wishes goes to thosemembers who have supported these groupsand particularly those who have volunteered tobe chairmen. Thanks are also due to the staff

who have put a lot of time and effort in gettingthese groups off the ground and sourcing theinterest – particularly Charlotte Barratt in RICSWest and Kate Sumpster in RICS East.

It is great that RICS matrics is able to providesimilar opportunities to younger membersacross the UK and that coverage is growing.Volunteer committees giving up their time andenergy to support fellow members are trulyfantastic and proves that RICS matrics is thelifeblood of the organisation.

Welcome to new groups

National Five A Side FootballCompetition 2007/08

The venue for this year's tournament wasBrunel University in Uxbridge, this was also thevenue for the 2006 competition.

Teams from all over the UK as far as Belfast,Bristol and Edinburgh competed for the titleand the rare August sun beat down throughoutthe day as the teams battled it out.

The two leagues played for well over five hourswith the matches being refereed by RICSmatrics Sports & Social Secretary, Fred Slaterand RICS matrics UK Chairman 2008-09,Ashley Cooper. Despite a handful ofcontentious decisions, they seemed to show allthe integrity and resolve required of a PremierLeague referee.

As the group stages reached an end, the toptwo teams from each league progressedthrough to the semi-finals. The teams to make itthis far were London’s Copping Joyce,Edinburgh’s Graham & Sibbald, Essex’s Stace

and Alder King of Bristol.

As the day drew to a close, Graham & Sibbaldbeat Stace in the hard fought final to becrowned champions of 2008 at the post-tournament celebrations.

A big thank you to all teams who took part inthe competition, your involvement helped theevent to continue to be an enjoyable one for allconcerned.

IndividualAward:(awarded byRICS matricsUK Chairman)

Frank Malcolm ofRICS matricsScotland: Glasgow &West Region wasawarded theindividual prize. TheNational Chairman attended the Glasgow Burns Supperin January this year, a traditional event which Frank hadreinstated back on the calendar following a year’sabsence. This event calls for the Local Chairman to actas MC for the entire evening, a very arduous task forany member and one that despite his own reservationsFrank excelled in. Under Frank’s Chairmanship Glasgowhave since doubled the size of their Committee, andwhilst he now works in Edinburgh he remains a memberof Glasgow and has since become the Scottish NationalSports Secretary.

RICS matrics Vice Chairmen’s BriefingOn Friday 9 April, the incoming local Chairmen for theforthcoming 2008/09 session all met up in Leicesterfor a series of presentations and networking to preparethem for their term of office. The Friday afternooncommenced with all the Chairmen introducingthemselves and their current and forthcoming roles, pluslisting and interesting fact about themselves. This ‘broke’the ice for the day and we all found out that CharteredSurveyors are in fact quite interesting people outsidethe professional arena. Some most interesting includedfree climbing, a national kayaker, a collector of old LandRovers, plus someone who could put a strawberrybootlace up one nostril and down the other!

A presentation skills seminar, which was helpful forvarious public speaking engagements the newly elected

Chairmen would have undertake over the next year, finished off the afternoon for the first day.

Day turned to night and the Leicester, Northants andRutland’s incoming Chairman, Will Newman, arranged atreasure hunt across the newly face- lifted centre ofLeicester. The group started with a meal at an ‘eat asmuch as you like’ buffet Chinese restaurant and thenproceeded in teams to wobble around the city centre ingroups of four on the treasure hunt. Much fun was hadby all and it was an opportunity for all to see the sitesand local hospitality that Leicester had to offer – plusessential networking within one’s peer group. Thewinning group were richly rewarded the next morningwith a presentation of Melton Mowbray pork pies andsome cheap bubbly to accompany!

A very productive interactive session followed until lunchwith the groups being advised on how to run a localgroup and what sort of events they may wish to put onin their local area. After lunch an open session from thefloor followed which gave the delegates an opportunityto quiz both Karen Rogers, RICS matrics and UKOperations Manager and Ashley Cooper, RICS matricsChairman 2008-09, on RICS issues – plus a finalopportunity for Ashley to remind the delegates of hisobjectives as National Chairman for the year ahead.

A well received weekend and a great fresh andenergetic start to the 2008/09 session.
