Julie also called Bob Tibbatts to the podium and she presented him with a Paul Harris award for his service as Club president during the past year.

Court is in SessionHis Honor Tom O’Brien opened Court as presiding Judge for today’s meeting. Judge Tom began by asking members to testify to the Club regarding any Brags and Confessions. Blaine Carr, Cynthia Vaughn, Bob Larson and several other members took the stand. C. Mark Smith used this court session also to mention his new book – again! Of course, appropriate donations were made by members when addressing the Court.

Judge Tom then wondered how well the Richland Rotary members actually knew each other. As a test of their knowledge, His Honor then asked each table to name the month and year a particular fellow Rotarian entered the Club. As Judge Tom polled each table, a wide range of generally incorrect responses were provided which resulted in numerous fines ordered by the Court. Of course, the fines imposed by His Honor went to the Rotary Foundation.

ProgramMr. Brian Anderson, an attorney with Anderson Law in Kennewick and a member of the Columbia Center Rotary Club, was introduced to speak about the Wit Initiative. The Wit Initiative is a program aimed at establishing career education for teenagers in the Tri-Cities. Wit strives to help junior and senior high school students become active in the workplace through internships, thereby providing teens with information on potential future careers while still in high school. Further, these internships provide local employers with potential candidates for future employment.

The Wit Initiative connects innovative businesses with competent junior and senior high schoolers, with the goal of helping move teens forward. By integrating hands-on experience with paid internships to develop the knowledge and understanding teenagers need to achieve their educational and career potentials. In addition, the Wit Initiative allows employers to reach a diversified group of our area’s youth, expanding the community outreach of the business.

Brian summarized by stating simply having a college degree is no longer a proxy to being successful as an adult. Rather, internships are now the number one factor toward influencing hiring decisions as students who successfully complete an internship are most likely to be hired. The Wit Initiative is actively looking for employers who have internships to offer and will assist in matching them with potential interns.

Brian concluded by fielding questions posed by Club members and mentioning more information may be obtained through the Wit Initiative website, https://www.witinitiative.org/.

New MemberThe Richland Rotary Club Board has approved Constanze Schafstall for club membership. Constanze works as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch and would be classified as Finance: Financial Advisor. Constanze is sponsored by Rick Wilson and has not been a member of this or any other Rotary Club in the past. Please provide written or emailed notification to Blaine Carr within the next 7 calendar days if you believe Constanze Schafstall should not become a member of the Richland Rotary Club.

Hal’s HumorA man is shipwrecked and is the only survivor. When he wakes up, he’s on a beach. The sand is purple. He can’t believe it. The sky is purple. He walks around a bit and sees that there is purple
