New Programs Launched At RHS New programs for attendance incentives and classroom leader- ship rewards began at Rice High School last week. The attendance incentive program was restructured and a new program, Raider of the Week, was started. Thirty names were drawn from the 191 students who had perfect attendance in the first six weeks of school. They were treated to a pizza lunch served outside at the newly created picnic area. Picnic tables and umbrellas were provided for seating and horseshoes and ping pong were available for entertainment dur- ing the lunch period. Only the students who were drawn for the reward were al- lowed outside in the picnic area. In the future, the incentive lunches will be held every three weeks. At year end, a special lunch will be provided for the students who have had perfect attendance all year. The Raider of the Week pro- gram recognizes one student each week. The faculty makes the selection based on the stu- dent's attitude and effort in the classroom. Principal Eric Grogan sug- gested that teachers choose a student who demonstrates lead- ership in the classroom through promptness, turning in work in a timely fashion, politeness, helping others, and participation. Senior Cody Munoz was selected as the first honoree. Each week the Raider of the Week will be announced through the press. The student will be allowed to choose three friends to join them in playing video games on the newly purchased Wii game sys- tem during lunch. Other students can look on, but cannot play. The new programs are intend- ed to motivate and reward stu- dents. They are paid for through grant funds and the district's an- nual expenditure for attendance incentives.
