    2009 SEASON REVIEW Ian Hodder

    Upper stories at atalhyk

The aims of the excavation this year were to

uncover some well-preserved burned buildingsin the South Area of the site. We have beenconcentrating our work in this area in order tounderstand the development of the site throughtime. There is some evidence that the whole ofthe site underwent major change in Level VI,half way through the 1400 years of occupation. There is much burning of buildings in Level VI.

There is also the appearance of public open

areas, with public ovens and much digging ofpits to obtain clay, and then re-use of the pits forrubbish. Many of the distinctive characteristicsof atalhyk such as the bullhorns start to dieout after Level VI. There are of course changesthat lead up to Level VI, but the fires at the endof this phase seem to be associated with animportant shift in the pattern of occupation.

General view of the excavations in the South Area at atalhyk. Photo Jason Quinlan.

Some of the buildings burned in Level VI arevery well preserved. The walls of some of thesebuildings have been found standing over 3mhigh. In one of the burned buildings, Building79, we found a beautiful stone figurine of abearded man (see cover photo) as well asanother stone figurine. But it is the architecturalevidence from the burned buildings 79 and 80that is most fascinating. One of the intriguingquestions left by James Mellaart was howpeople moved around on the roofs of houses.

    Reconstructions of atalhyk have always

assumed very simple buildings, with flat roofsall joined together so that people could movearound easily over the roof tops. On at least oneoccasion, Mellaart found evidence that did notreally fit this hypothesis. For example, in hisShrine 10 in Level VI, he found a collapsedwall relief that seemed to be a splayed figure(which he interpreted as a goddess but which wenow think was a bear). There was no room for

this collapsed relief on the well-preserved walls

2009 Seasons WorkThe 2009 The atalhyk season ran from 10th June to 2nd October. We had again a large team atatalhyk this summer, 160 researchers and students of 15 different nationalities worked at the site,as well as 20 local workforce. We were also joined by 25 visitors throughout the season. As well as theusual Stanford-UK team, and the existing team from Poland (led by Arek Marciniak and Lech

Czerniak), a team of Selcuk University students worked with the project and a new long-term agreementwas signed with Selcuk University. Working on the Chalcolithic levels on the West Mound were twoteams one from SUNY Buffalo and the Free University of Berlin (led by Peter Biehl and EvaRosenstock) and the other from the University of Thrace at Edirne (led by Burin Erdou).

The season was split into a study season from 15th June until the end of July and then followed by theexcavation season for 6 weeks. In the one and a half months before the excavation season, the teamworked on post-excavation analyses in preparation for the publication of four new volumes covering theexcavations from 2000 to 2008.

    EXCAVATIONS

Introduction to the Excavation Areas 2009 Shahina Farid

As the 2009 season was primarily a study season, excavations took place in three areas only in the

South Area on the Neolithic East Mound andTrenches 5 and 8 on the West ChalcolithicMound. The study season ran from 15th June untilthe end of July during which time teams workedon post-excavation analyses in preparation for thepublication of four new volumes covering theexcavations in the 4040 Area, South Area, TPArea and IST Area excavated from 2000 to 2008.The aim of the phase of work in preparation forpublication addressed the social geography of thesettlement and larger community structure.

    South Area

Under direction of the Project, the excavationteam in the South Areas comprise professionalexcavators assisted by members of field schoolsfrom collaborative universities and internationalstudents. The aim is for students to work alongside professional excavators to gain a good andthorough grounding in excavation skills, recording and integrated interpretation.

The research aims in the South Area are toexplore more fully the temporal processes thatproduce phases of settlement because thebuildings remaining from the Mellaart and our

excavations occur at different levels. Thus it ispossible to examine the chronological

development of houses in relation to each otherfrom the very base of the mound. We also worktowards expanding the area where we reachednatural lake marl in 1999. In order to reach ourtarget we have first to move further away fromthat focal point, but whilst doing so we will befulfilling the aim of excavating a temporalsequence.

Elemental Characterization of Neolithic Artefacts Using Portable X-Ray Fluorescence [PXRF] -Tristan Carter

Thanks to the generosity of Bruce Kaiser, ChiefScientist of Bruker AXS, we were able toborrow his companys Bruker Tracer III-Vportable X-Ray Fluorescence [PXRF]spectrometer for the on-site elemental analysisof a wide range of artefacts.

PXRF analysis of the plastered skull (11330) from Building 42,South Area, in Konya Museum. Photo Nurcan Yalman.

At atalhyk we analysed upon a relativelywide range of media, focusing on those artefacts

/materials for which it is difficult, if not

impossible, to export for analysis and/or removesub-samples. These included a range of paintedand plastered skulls, plus other skeletal material

(in conjunction with D. amurcuolu, S.Haddow and L. Hager), pigments and paints(with D. amurcuolu), a large quantity of

obsidian (working with M. Mili, N. Kayacanand S. Ostaptchouk), together with various findsfrom the West Mound excavations of Biehl andRosenstock (in conjunction with Ingmar Franz),plus those of Erdou.

While most of the raw data requiresnormalisation and further manipulation, a briefprcis can be given here of two of the mostimportant analyses and their results.

Plastered skull (11330) from Building 42 in theSouth Area, excavated in 2004 (Boz and Hager2004), is plastered from forehead to chin, with abackground of white plaster painted with a redpigment. The skull has been on display inKonya Museum since 2004 and has neverpreviously been analysed. With full permissionfrom the curator we were allowed to use thePXRF to elementally characterise the redpigment in the gallery. The results indicate that

the pigment is iron-based, i.e. an ochre.Painted skull (E VI, 20) we also analysed anumber of the renowned red-painted skulls fromthe 1960s excavations, including one fromLevel VI that had large frontal areas of a brightred pigment. The PXRF analysis, using thesame method detailed above, confirmed clearlyMellaarts original claim that this vibrantcolorant was the highly toxic cinnabar (HgS), amercuric sulphide.

During the excavation season, 11 new skeletons, some complete and some partial, required ourattention. Three of these were isolated crania and 8 were primary inhumations. The 3 skulls were

found in the South Area in various contexts. Five of the primary interments were found in Building76, also in the South Area, which had burned during Neolithic times. The five skeletons were underthe east and northeast platforms while the fire burned above. The bones were differentially altered byfire depending on their proximity to the hottest part of the fire. The skulls for all five individuals werescorched to a black-brown and, in one instance, the entire skeleton was blackened. One neonate wasfound at the lowest level of Building 53, a building in the South last excavated in 2006. In the 4040Area, a young childs skeleton was recovered from the northwest platform of Building 49, the earliestindividual to be interred in the house. Finally, similar to last year, the West Mound found a neonate inChalcolithic deposits in Trench 5.
