Is there a better way to celebrate the summer than by catching a flick in the sunshine?

Pull up a deckchair and enjoy blockbusters and family classics as NE1 Monument Movies makes a welcome return at Grey’s Monument in July. Before then there’s fun for all the family at the city’s traditional picture houses thanks to the prehistoric thrills and spills of Jurassic World and the loveable yellow Minions. For adult viewing, the naughty teddy bear returns in Ted 2, Magic Mike XXL hits the big screens and Arnie’s back in Terminator: Genisys.NE1 Monument Movies, getintonewcastle.co.ukEmpire Cinema, empirecinemas.co.ukTyneside Cinema, tynesidecinema.co.uk

The Stand offers up more Edinburgh Fringe Preview shows to keep you smiling over the next fortnight.

Stephen Carlin presents fun without facts and radical Scottish comics Mark Nelson, Keir McAllister and Vladimir McTavish ask So That’s What We Voted For? in an irreverent look at Scottish politics on June 29. We Are Klang creator Steve Hall presents his new show alongside North East favourite Gavin Webster on June 30. Meanwhile, Mary Bourke’s Irish housewife’s guide to life, love and hip hop and Tobias Persson’s Driven Rights Movement is certain to tickle your funny bone on July 5. The Stand, June 29-July 5, £8-£6, thestand.co.uk

Celebrating Newcastle’s cultural hub, the Ouseburn Festival ventures down the rabbit hole with an Alice In Wonderland theme.

Sunday’s parade is always a highlight, there’s food galore at the market, animal activities at the farm and Stepney Bank Stables, and The Cluny offers a chance to win the coveted Golden Duck in the duck race. NARC. Fest fills the Valley with music on Saturday night, with free gigs galore. Ouseburn Festival, 4-5 July, free ouseburnfestival.org.uk

IN THE FESTIVAL SPIRIT VEGGIE HEAVEN

IN THE GUNGEThere’s nothing quite like getting good and mucky on a Saturday afternoon, especially if you can have a good laugh too.

Newcastle comic Lee Kyle hosts a game show like no other in which teams compete to avoid a dreaded gunging. Aimed at 5-12 year olds, adults are also welcome if only to laugh and point as their offspring get covered in gooey gunge...until they remember the laundry. The Stand July 4, £3 thestand.co.uk

Proving that a vegan diet doesn’t only consist of green things, the Vegan Festival returns to the Toon offering all sorts of healthy grub.

From cakes and chocolates to takeaway food, plus make-up, clothing and even pet treats, the festival is a one-stop shop for ethical and sustainable living. Speakers will elucidate on the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle, there are ground-breaking documentary screenings and free samples too. Assembly Rooms, July 4, £2 veganfestival.co.uk

Taking the view that all good ideas are worth sharing, the global conference group TEDx welcomes clever bods to Newcastle’s Great North Museum: Hancock this month.

TEDx prize winner and Newcastle Uni professor Sugata Mitra (pictured) heads the line up with Incredible Edible co-founder Pam Warhurst, mathematical biologist Thomas Woolley, music scholar Sophie Westbrooke and many more set to join him to discuss their fields.Great North Museum: Hancock, July 5, £27 tedxnewcastle.com

Perhaps best known as the man who sent an angel to guard the North, Antony Gormley’s sculptural work is highly recognisable and often grand in scale.

Taking the human body as his inspiration, his works have ranged from our very own Angel of the North, to Crosby Beach’s cast iron figures in the sea and the memorable One & Other installation, which invited members of the public to spend an hour on a vacant plinth in the middle of London’s Trafalgar Square.

This summer, Hatton Art Gallery presents a small group of drawings from 2002-2014 which offer an insight into the Turner Prize-winning artist’s processes. Hatton Gallery, June 26-August 8, free hattongallery.org.uk

There’s no better way to finish the week off than with a good giggle, and at The Stand the weekend starts on Thursday.

The comedy club presents a triple bill of rib-tickling acts from July 2, including Scottish raconteur Gary Little, fun-loving Blyth native Kai Humphries and actress, writer and all-round funny lady Jo Caulfield (pictured). Go on...it’s the weekend! The Stand, July 2-4, from £10 thestand.co.uk

BRAINS OF BRITAIN

SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND FARE THEE WELL

The Grateful Dead, one of America’s most iconic rock acts, make a surprise return as the four remaining members perform for one last time, and you can be at the heart of the action thanks to Tyneside Cinema.

The revered band’s sound spans genres, from bluegrass to reggae, country to psychedelia, amassing a legion of fans across the world. More than 500,000 ticket requests were received for their final hurrah at Soldier Field in Chicago, and Tyneside Cinema will be screening the highly anticipated gig for Toon-based Deadheads to get their final fix. Guaranteed to be a show that will go down in rock and roll history. Tyneside Cinema, July 6 £15, tynesidecinema.co.uk

Not exactly your average Shakespearian production, the RSC’s Famous Victories of Henry V aims to encourage youngsters to get down with the Bard.

An exhilarating take on some of Shakespeare’s most epic tales, the performance brings together exciting moments from Henry IV parts I and II and from Henry V, as bad boy Prince Hal swaps a rebellious life in London for the battlefields of France. Accessible, exciting and educational, it’s a must for youngsters aged eight and up. Theatre Royal, June 30, from £5.50, theatreroyal.co.uk

Making the best of a bad situation is something that comes naturally to a comedian. On stage there are times you have to win over a tough crowd. But in life, you can turn the traumatic into an hour-long show.

While there are comedians who would welcome disaster for the sake of this much material, Matt Reed doesn’t need it. A skilled comic and compere, he is deft at freewheeling long exchanges and making them very funny. However, the events that form the basis of his latest show Stalked have given Matt a great story with which to ground his excellent audience interaction.

An online relationship takes an unusual turn, and a game of cat and mouse ensues that soon becomes frighteningly real. His preview at Jesterval recently saw a packed tent get freaked out and laugh in equal measure at this personal, unnerving, funny and brilliant show - definitely one to catch in Edinburgh later this summer.IM

ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOATAnyone who’s ever puzzled over the lyrics to The Blaydon Races will be enchanted by new theatrical production Hadaway Harry, which remembers the North East’s first sporting superstar Harry Clasper, on whom the iconic song was based. In 1845, Harry, the greatest rower of his generation, and his brothers were triumphant in the World Rowing Championships, bringing the title to the region for the first time. Harry’s up there with the region’s sporting greats, and the play will bring the story of the champion sculler and working class hero to life. IN FINE VOICESISTER ACTIf you think opera’s not quite your cuppa,

Opera North’s production of The Flying Dutchman will change your mind.

The most accessible of Wagner’s pieces, the story contains all sorts of dastardly deeds and exciting drama; a ghostly ship, a satanic curse and a love so powerful it transcends death. The production is made all the more spectacular by stunning accompanying visuals, setting the audience at the heart of the action. Gripping! Sage Gateshead, July 3, from £15 sagegateshead.com

Fast rising American roots siblings Rebecca and Megan Lovell, otherwise known as Larkin Poe, have quite the CV.

INTO THE KNIGHT

Ah, the heady days of the 80s, when big hair and shoulder pads were de rigeur, and Big Country rode the top of the charts with Celtic charm, bagpipes and fiddles.

While the hair may have been tamed, the band’s appeal hasn’t waned, and Big Country continue to produce a modern take on Celtic rock with elements of folk and new wave thrown in for good measure. Expect all the hits at their Best Of show including The Seer, In A Big Country and Fields Of Fire - just leave the shoulder pads at home. O2 Academy, June 27, £20 o2academynewcastle.co.uk

CHINA TOWN

CHINA TOWN

WOK ‘N’ ROLL!

Beside the city’s historic walls and a stone’s throw from St James’ Park, Newcastle’s Chinatown is one of Toon’s most vibrant multi-cultural hubs.

You can taste your way around the Orient along the busy cobbled street, where Japanese sushi emporia meet Taiwanese bubble tea shops, exotic supermarkets and authentic Chinese cuisine.

Just outside the city walls, Fujiyama Teppanyaki fuses superb Japanese food with entertainment as chefs cook in front of you. Watch them catch eggs in their hats and resist their offer to try it for yourself (a sure-fire way to get egg on your face).

On Stowell Street, exotic aromas waft out of every doorway. It’s no longer about all you can eat buffets - although if you’re looking for a banquet we recommend Lau’s and Happiness 2. For something more delicate, try plump dim sum at Wing Kee’s Hong Kong style café, or seafood at King Neptune’s, specialists in Peking cuisine.

For traditional feasts, Palace Garden’s lantern-strewn interior has a carp stream and is a popular spot for both lunch. Sky specialises in Hot Pot menus and traditional classics; while Royal Emperor has an enviable banquet menu.

For fresh and funky eats, Dojo Japanese restaurant specialises in Teishoku set meals which include Miso soup, Japanese steamed egg, pickles and fruit. Plus there’s sushi and tempura in abundance.

If you’re after a snack or unusual

NEWCASTLE’S CHINATOWN HAS CHANGED SINCE THE DAYS OF ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT BUFFETS. WE POP DOWN TO STOWELL STREET AND SAMPLE ITS AUTHENTIC ASIAN DELIGHTS

beverage, Bubble Cha is the place to try Taiwanese bubble tea. A milky tea base can be supplemented with exotic flavours from herbal to fruit infusions and jelly toppings. There are also snacks too including fab pork buns.

Little Asia serves a mix of light bites and hearty Chinese dishes, while Asian bakery and cafe Bread Point’s Chinese buns are to die for!

For a taste of luxury, The Mandarin’s sumptuous decor complements the wonderful Thai menu - try chef’s special Pla Neung Manow, steamed seabass flavoured with lemongrass, fresh chilli and lime juice. Landmark Oriental restaurant and bar across the street also offers swish, high-end dining, with an à la carte menu and buffet options. Thai Siam is also a great choice for dinner with its ever-popular banquets perfect for big groups.

Extend your night out at Red Diner thanks to its private karaoke booths. In a hurry? Chinatown Express offers a relaxed café vibe and top takeaway.

Recreate your amazing meal at home and buy ingredients for your own Oriental feast from Chinese supermarket Wing Hong, while HiYoU Oriental also offers tempting treats in its bakery, exotic fresh produce, fortune cookies and an impressive range of fresh and frozen delights, plus much more.

In Chinatown, as well as top notch food, you’re guaranteed a friendly welcome; step through the beautiful ornate Chinese arch and indulge your senses!
