Families and Friends of TF Six Shooters, I hope the holidays were good to everyone and the New Year has brought you good fortune. I hope many of you were able to attend our Winter Ball in January and I think all would agree, it was quite a good time! I am always entertained by some of your dancing skills and I think PFC McGowan in B Co wins the most enthusiastic dancer award. I would like to extend a special thanks to Karin Windorski who was our guest speaker. Her words about our CAV Family on the 4 th anniversary of the Adversary 11/22 shoot down were inspiring and appropriate considering all the changes oc- curring in our unit lately. Thank you Karin! If you have not heard, there are significant changes occurring in our Squadron Task Force. As the fight in Afghanistan changes in anticipa- tion of draw down and eventual exit in 2014, the force structure there is also changing. As part of that, we must also change to mirror the unit cur- rently there so we are properly postured for our hand over. Thus, it is with a very heavy heart that we say goodbye to some of our Task Force teammates as we re-organize to best match the unit cur- rently in Afghanistan. A Co Voodoos, B Co Killer Spades, and all Maintainers from D Troop and staff members from HHT who fly or maintain AH-64s or UH-60s are leaving the Squadron Task Force for other Battalion Task Forces in the Brigade. For nearly three years we have all lived, fought, and worked together as a team, and it’s no small thing to end that special bond and move on. So I’d simply like to say to all our departing teammates that you will always hold a special part in our hearts here in the CAV. We wish you luck on your impending deployment, and look forward to your safe return. Always be proud of your time here in 6-6 CAV. CAV units are special, and made all the more special by having you all as a part of team these past 3 years. If there is a silver lining to these changes, it is that B Troop, cur- rently assigned to Task Force Tigershark, and all the OH-58D personnel as- signed to Task Force Phoenix are returning to 6-6 CAV. Effective 11 Febru- ary, Task Force Sixshooter is no more. From here forward we are back to being just 6-6 CAV Squadron as a pure OH-58D unit. I know many of the OH-58D folks have heard rumor that we will not deploy. All I can say at this point is that many options are being ex- plored by senior Army leadership and as of now, no final decisions have been made. We are ready to deploy, and will maintain that posture until officially told otherwise, while acknowledging that not deploying is an op- tion being considered. As I find out more, I will be certain to share openly with our Soldiers and Families. From the Commander Contd. I would also like to thank all of our Soldiers and Families for being so patient, un-

derstanding, and flexible during these changes and amid all the rumors. It is a testament

to your professionalism and I could not be more proud of you all. Our way ahead as a

Squadron will become clear in the coming weeks and we will execute our mission, no mat-

ter where it takes us, with vigor and enthusiasm just as the CAV always has. Enjoy the

A Troop/ 6-6 Hello Assassin Families, Welcome back from our much needed Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. I hope each of you had enjoyable time with your loved ones.

Before everyone went on block leave, Alpha troop had a fun-filled Christmas party at the hanger. Not only did we have a visit from “CAV Santa”, but eve-ryone enjoyed “Shooter” the Squadron horse. Kids climbed on Shooter to get their picture taken with CAV style with Santa, an Oh-58D, and a patriotic-themed Christmas tree in the background. The Families came with an amazing spread of food that smelled up the entire hanger, making it feel like Christmas. We finished the night with a gift exchange. A blanket and hungry hippos seemed to be the hot items! It truly was a great party. A big thanks to several people: SGT Carson for his photography skills; Lisette Mendez, Rhianne Dean, and Sherry Vance for their decorating ability and com-mitment to the troop; Dawn Newhouse for providing a craft activity, and Amanda Per-kins for bringing gifts for the kids. Thanks Assassins for your participation. I would like to welcome some new members to the Assassin Team. First, welcome to our newest addition, PV2 Juarez. He will be joining our already amazing maintenance team. We also have a few new pilots to welcome. The Poland family joins us from Fort Lewis. Straight from flight school, we welcome the Adamy family, Pietrasz Family, and Dionne Family. I can honestly say that everyone one of these new guys has already contributed to making the Assassin troop better. Thanks for all you have done so far. We look forward to working together. Unfortunately, we have to say goodbye to some key Assassins that have made Alpha Troop the best troop in the Squadron. CW3 O’Malley will be moving on to fly light util-ity helicopters. CW3 Newhouse and CW3 VanKirk have both completed successful Army careers and have decided to retire from active duty. You all will be greatly missed in the troop and in the squadron. You and your families have all given so much to this unit. Thanks for the legacy you have left for all of us to enjoy and protect. The standards you have established and kept have made this troop great.

The Assassin Troop Soldiers came back from block leave to be on the run again. Train-ing thus far has consisted of small arms ranges, crew serve weapons ranges, continu-ous flights, and advanced aerial gunnery. CW3 Vance has been in Colorado for a month successfully running HAMET. While there, he flew 100 incident free hrs in or-der to ensure that the squadrons pilots were trained to fly in high altitude situations. This type of training can be challenging and dangerous. Thanks for a great job Vance, and we look forward to having you back at Drum. The Squadron Ball was the most recent event in which the Assassins came in force. The speaker was great with a heartfelt message reminding us of our CAV family. Thanks to all the Assassin Soldiers and family members that attended. CPT Joshua Lazzarini “Assassin 6”

A Company/2-10 It is with the utmost disap-

pointment that we received the news

that the Cav would not be deploying.

The entirety of A Co. was looking for-

ward to putting the TF SIX

SHOOTER stamp on Afghanistan one

last time. We will bring the Cav tradi-

tion of excellence with us (as well as

our Spurs and Stetsons) and make

you proud living the traditions. We

look forward to the ride back to

drink again with friends on that

Voodoo Families and Friends, Even with the Change of

force has not slowed down and

looks to maintain the pace all the

way through to deployment. We

enjoyed the long Christmas exo-

dus but jumped back into the

fray, supporting TF TIGER-

SHARK’s JRTC rotation with two

crews the first day back from

leave. By all accounts LT McHale,

CW3 Lusk, CW2 Gilmour and

CW2 Shpunder, did an out-

standing job representing Voo-

doo, earning high praise from the

JRTC cadre.

Back at Ft Drum, the com-

pany supported the presidential

inauguration by prepositioning

HHT Troopers to FT Belvoir. The

fight was made memorable by us-

ing the helicopter transition

route through Washington DC.

The route flown gave an aerial

B Company/1-10 Killer Spade Family and Friends, It is a bittersweet time for the

Killer Spades with the recent news that

the company will be breaking apart. The

company has become a close family over

the past few years and even in the few

months that I have been in command I

have seen the members of our team

grow and achieve greatness. It is sad in

the fact that Bravo Company as we cur-

rently know it will go away, but I am ex-

cited for our members as they now have

the opportunity to improve the other

companies within the Brigade by bringing

all of the experience and knowledge we

share as Killer Spades.

Since the Christmas break we

have had some exciting events occur. We

ended the year with a great Christmas

Party at Jose O’ Connors where every-

one was able to enjoy each other’s com-

pany as we headed into Christmas Leave.

In other exciting news, Cody Roberts

was recently promoted to the rank of

Sergeant, a well deserved move that re-

flects on all of the hard work he has ac-

complished. We have had some recent

births within the company to include 1LT

Matt and Alecia Blair welcoming baby Ava

on Jan 28, CW2 Matt and Colleen Wright

welcomed baby Michael on Dec 3, and

CW2 Rocky and Brooke Jensen wel-

comed baby Hannah on Nov 21. Con-

gratulations to all the new parents!

Despite what will be a short stay

before the move, we have welcomed

some new members to the company in

the past few weeks. 1SG Deon McCarthy

replaced 1SG Harold Brown on Jan 14.

Although we were sad to see 1SG Brown

leave after four years with the com-

pany, 1SG McCarthy has stepped up

and fit right in with the team. We also

welcomed our new Platoon Leader,

2LT Michael Lynch who joined us from

flight school at Ft. Rucker, AL. 2LT

Lynch has been in

integral part of the

company reorganiza-

tion effort and has

been eagerly learning

all there is to know about being an Attack

Platoon Leader. Finally, we welcomed CW3

Albert Stephens who recently finished the

Instructor Pilot Course and has already been

flying with the company to improve the skills

of our pilots.

Throughout the month of January we

have had several pilots conduct High Altitude

Mountainous Environmental Training at Ft.

Carson, CO. During this training our pilots

learned important skills such as navigation

and power management in mountainous ter-

rain, confined area landings on the tops of

10,000 ft mountains, and weather characteris-

tics in such environments that will greatly

enhance their flying abilities in Afghanistan.

Participants included CPT Alexander, CPT

Roe, CW2 Symmes, CW3 Stephens, CW2

Donato, and CW2 Lee.

Finally, on Jan 25 the Killer Spades

participated in the Squadron Ball at The

Commons on Ft Drum. We had a great turn

out and a fun night in what ended up being

one of the final culminating events for the

company. LTC Sweet presented Bravo Com-

pany with a red and white CAV Guidon

which signified that once a Trooper has been

a part of the Cavalry, they are always part of

the Cavalry. Everyone enjoyed the rest of the

night on the dance floor watching PFC Scott

McGowan as he danced his way to the “Most

Awesome Dancer at the Ball” award.

In closing I would like to thank all the

soldiers and family members of Bravo Com-

pany for everything you have done as mem-

bers of the Killer Spades. It has been an

honor to command this fine company and I

look forward to working with you in the fu-

ture. ATTACK!!

Outcast Families, I would like to take this opportunity to say “hello” to those of you I have yet to meet. My name is CPT Amelia Hunter, and I am extremely excited to take over as Charlie Troop, 6-6 CAV Commander. My husband, Blake, and I are eager to get to know all of you better over the next years, and we truly wanted to say thank you for such a warm welcome to the Out-cast Family. I would also like to say a big thank you to CPT Paul Milas for all of his hard work and dedication to the Outcast Soldiers and families. Since the Change of Command in De-cember, our Troop has been able to enjoy a great period of time off during the 3-week Block Leave. This gave us a fresh new start and the ability to jump right back into the swing of things to start off 2013 on the right foot. I have been thor-oughly impressed with the hard work and dedication of our maintainers who tire-lessly work on the aircraft to have it mis-sion ready for our training flights and demanding gunnery schedules. At the same time, our pilots continue to train, grow, and excel as professional aviators and tactically proficient pilots. We have a great team and a great mission! Our Troop has also had the opportunity to qualify this month at both small arms and crew served weapons ranges. Thank you to so many of you that ran the range as OIC, RSO, and Safety. Also, congratu-lations to CW3 Mark Leach who qualified as Expert with perfect scores on M9 and M4. Last month we also had the oppor-tunity to send many of our Soldiers to different schools to include Safety School, CBRN School, Armorer School, WLC, and HAMET. A special thanks to CW3 Ryan Ervin and CW3 Mark Leach for their time and hard work out at Colo-rado supporting the HAMET training.

We have a variety of announcements. First I would like to congratulate two of our Soldiers on their recent promotion. SGT Ann Dehaan and SGT Joshua Jonas are great additions to the NCO Corps. Next, congratulations to SGT Tad Nelson for his re-enlistment and continued dedication to the United States Army. Welcome to CW2 Luke James and his wife Susan as well as WO1 Krystal Fye and her husband Jon. We would also like to welcome 1LT Andrew Mars and his wife Ca-sey as the new 1st Platoon Leader. With that being said, we will sadly say good bye to 1LT Schuyler Emery-Munn but not without first congratulating him on his recent marriage to Kelly. CW2 Rudy Camacho also recently tied the knot with Jen over block leave. Finally we say farewell to CW3 Mark Leach and Aubree even though they will just be headed down the hall to D Troop since Mark has been hand selected as the new PC Officer. We know this position is well de-served, and he will do an excellent job. Congrats! Finally, thank you to those of you that came out and enjoyed the Squadron Ball in true Outcast fashion, and I hope many of you are excited for all of our upcoming FRG events. Our Troop is truly blessed to have such incredible FRG Volunteers. Our new FRG Co-Leaders, Melissa Dude and Kim Neal, have been doing a phenomenal job! Please show your support at the Troop FRG Chili Cook Off on 11 DEC at 1700 in the 6-6 CAV Hanger. Also, come and support WO1 Krystal Fye on 22 FEB at 1LT Mars’ house when we help her break in her Stetson and enjoy the first 2013 Outcast Troop Party! Again, thank you for your continued support

and keep up the hard work.

D Troop/6-6 Desperado Friends & Families,

The Holiday break offered the tireless Sol-

diers of Delta Troop the opportunity to spend some

well deserved time relaxing with their families and friends! After a wonderful

Troop Christmas Party at Dirty Harry’s, featuring a lively white elephant gift

exchange potluck dinner, and a visit from Santa and his elf (a special thanks to

SGT Dejesus and PFC Howard), the Soldiers and their families departed their

separate ways to enjoy their time off. However, I would be remiss not to men-

tion the last minute heroics of our own SFC James Ligons, who saved the day at

the Troop Party by having extra pizza delivered to feed the hungry after a larger

than expected turnout! All in all, the Party proved a huge success and capped

off an extremely productive 2012 for the Desperados!

Following Christmas leave, our team returned fully energetic and pre-

pared to confront any challenge awaiting us in 2013. However, the new year

quickly brought significant changes that we were not anticipating. Delta Troop

and the Squadron Task Force received the news that we would be reorganizing

our equipment and people back to a pure Kiowa unit. Consequently, we will

shortly say goodbye to our outstanding Avionics technicians, Blackhawk me-

chanics, Apache mechanics, and Apache Armament technicians as they move on

to join new teams throughout our Aviation Brigade. We recognize that the sum

of our parts proved far greater than the individual pieces that came together to

produce it. It is with a heavy heart that we must say goodbye; nevertheless, we

realize that once you are a part of the Cavalry family, you never truly leave.

Once a Desperado, always a Desperado.

Mustang Family & Friends- Welcome to all of the new spouses and families that have joined us in the last few months, I hope you all have been able to find good winter coats and fun things to do here at Drum with the snow. We have had a great run of holidays and block leave and it was good to see so many families travel home to see relatives and to resorts and vacation spots. It is very important to take advantage of the time the Army does give us off from our demanding profession. Thank you to everyone who partici-pated in the Troop Christmas Party and more recently the Squadron Ball, the Army life is a lot easier when we go through it together in support of one another and celebrate the unique challenges we face. At the end of this month, a handful of soldiers will depart to Fort Rucker to participate in an Avia-tion Training Exercise for two weeks. In Mid-March, Spartan Peak will be going on and consists of a 10 day training exer-cise for 3rd BCT which will have some involvement from 6-6 Cav. The following will be departing our unit soon. When the year turns over, we reach a birthday, or mark a mo-ment of life transition, most people take it as a cue to reflect on what they could do better or differently. For many of us, especially at New Year's, thoughts immediately turn to promises of new diets and more exercise—physical fitness; But what about spiritual fitness? What if our top priorities were inner inten-tions, like forgiveness and kindness, or understanding our Creator and why we are here rather than outer intentions like a better body or more money? While the last two and other ideas are all well and good, if we don’t care for our inner self, are really able to pursue physical activities to our fullest. With that thought in mind, here are few pointers for you to think about as our New Year begins it’s course. There are four basic areas that we need to continually be aware of: Spiritual, physi-cal, social and emotional. They are all connected as well. When one goes, the other areas slowly follow. When we exercise our spirituality we are more able to maintain and grow the other three. Some basic challenges for you and I to practice and grow our spirituality are as follows: Practice kindness and compassion as often as possi-ble, practice forgiveness regularly, become more involved in your community and maybe your local church or the post chapel, become a student of your faith and study it more to apply it in your daily life. These are just a few ideas for there are many. The constant fact in all of these is in-tentionality. Nothing just happens when it comes to our personal spiritual growth. We must be proactive and engage our minds, hearts and actions. This New Year can be a little easier on us if we would engage our spiritual journey. For us to be happy, filled with joy, love and inner strength, we must be spiritually strong, or to use the Army term, resilient. Here is a closing poem for thought: To Live Simply by William Henry Channing {1810-1884 } To live content with small means, to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never; to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony. From your chaplain: CH (CPT) David Arthur

FRG Advisor Yay!!! The North Country blanketed in all this beautiful snow! I hope you have taken the oppor-tunity to go sledding, snow shoeing, skiing at Dry Hill or you have just snuggled inside with some hot cocoa.

It was great seeing everyone at the Winter Ball in January. What a great time and I never knew so many of you could dance so well! (or so long!!!!) Our guest speaker was wonderfully pro-found and her message about family and “once CAV always CAV” was apropos as we are going through some big changes here at 6-6!

I’m sure, by now, you’ve heard a lot of news about changes in TF Sixshooter and all the different internal movements in 10th CAB. It is a bittersweet time for all of us as we see friends of ours move to different units, but it is also exciting because we’re welcoming Bravo Troop and their FRG Leader Stephanie Rickert, “back to the family.” Remember, if you have any questions or concerns about the changes, you can always call me or your FRG leader and ask! If we don’t know the answer to your questions, we will find someone who does!

6-6 has been busy! More and more babies are being born, and I get to meet them all!!! And we had a wonderful Cake Auction on Valentine’s Day! Thank-you to everyone to donated their cake making skills. Our chili cook-off is coming up soon in March and our talented chili auction win-ners will be out there trying to win bragging rights and some awards! If you didn’t have a chance to make it out to some of our other events, don’t miss the cook-off! I’m sure there will be lots of great food and when it comes to chili, the competition can get exciting!

Just a reminder, if you have some cabin fever, that every Tuesday @ 5PM at the Commons, is Family Night. It is a great thing to do with your children when the weather gets chilly and it’s also an inexpensive meal! BOSS has monthly movie nights and gaming tournaments and at the USO everyday at 11:00 AM is free snacks for our soldiers and families! Some other fun indoor things to do with your family or friends include roller skating at Showtime Skating or Bowling at one of the many bowling alleys on or off post!

If you want to celebrate winter and all it has to offer, you can head over to Dry Hill and take skiing lessons! They also have tubing at Dry Hill and Maple Ridge Center in Lowville, NY. Each Thursday at 10AM Fort Drum Parks & Rec has cross country skiing and lunch outings as weather permits, and if you’re super adventurous you can go snowmobiling or snowshoeing! At the Watertown Municipal Arena, public ice skating is available everyday in the afternoon and eve-ning, and they also have Rock n’ Skate at 8:15 PM on scheduled Saturdays. There is also FREE ice skating in Thompson Park on an outdoor rink, but you have to provide the skates. They do that Mon-Fri 5-8PM and Sat & Sun 11AM – 6PM.

As you can see there is so much to do in the area, and I hope you get a chance to do it before the

ice and snow melts! Hope to see you all soon!

Respectfully (and stay warm!), Lisa & Wendy
