Songs in the cultural revolution

Songs in the cultural revolution involved many people.

They all sing to feel empowered and stronger, supporting their political view.

There were 2 sides to the debate. Both sides had their “anthems”, that they belted out loudly, whilst lining the streets.

Anthem #1

The following anthem was sung by Chairman Mao’s supporters.

It was also sung by people that fear him, because they were made to. If they didn't’t sing, then they would be tortured, raped, or worse.

Song lyrics to The east is red

The east is red, The sun is rising. China has brought forth a Mao Zedong .He works for the people's happiness, hu erh hai ya, He is the people's great saving star.  Chairman Mao loves the people, Chairman Mao, he is our guide. To build a new China ,hu erh hai ya, He leads us forever forward.  The Communist Party is like the sun ,Bringing light wherever is shines. Where there's the Communist Party, hu erh hai ya, There the people will win liberation.

Anthem #2

This anthem wasn’t sung by many, and in fact, in the cultural revolution, it was forbidden to be sung.

It was later used as the national anthem, on and off in later periods of China’s history.

Song lyrics to the March of the volunteers

Arise! All who refuse to be slaves!Let our flesh and blood forge into our new Great Wall.As the Chinese people faces its greatest peril,Every person is forced to expel his very last cry.Arise! Arise! Arise! Our million hearts beating as one,Brave the enemy's fire, March on!Brave the enemy's fire, March on!March on! March on! On!

Anthem facts/similarities.

Most of these songs contain the name Mao Zedong, the ruler of the time of the Cultural Revolution. This is because he had huge power and influence at his disposal, so if something didn’t sounds good, then it would not be sung.

Many natural things are mentioned in all of them. The sun is mentioned many times, and the colour red. Also the “east” is mentioned lots, which refers to China, being “The East” and “oriental”.

These lyrics also suggest Mao as being the sun, and that he is rising to “provide warmth” to the Chinese people, and be something they can look up to.

The song “march of the volunteers” Is very ironic, because people were forced to sing it, not “volunteers”.
