REVISION OF KYIV’S GROUND

DATA COLLECTION
TECHNOLOGIES AND METHODS

Why Kyiv needs new transport strategy and new transport scheme –key facts:
Demographical factors: Objective factors:1 2

Growing population of Kyiv (number of inhabitants):
• Growing population of Kyiv and Kyiv agglomeration – more than 3 600 000people officially,
• More than 100 000 officially registeredmigrants in Kyiv from temporary occupied territories in the East part of Ukraine and Crimea, and real numbers of migrants nobody knows
• Last time measurement of passengers flows in Kyiv were held in 1986, since then, many things have changed.
• Number of private cars in Kyiv significantly increased – in 10 times (up to M1,3 private carsregistered in Kyiv),
• In 90s private operators with thousands of small buses («marshrutkas») started operations in Kyiv instead of municipal buses, trolley-buses and trams – it was completely new type of public transport for the city,
• Rapid real estate market growth in the middle of 2000s led to development of completely new business districts and new residential districts in Kyiv,
• New technologies which allows to conduct passengers flows measurement in public transport in more efficient way were introduced last 3-5 years.

Two key processes of the Project we did in parallel – and it was a big challenge for the team:
Transport model development: Network review – four key objectives:1 2
Data collection –key sources of data:
1. Transport mobility surveys.
2. Social and demographical statistics.
3. Mobile operators data.
4. GTFS data from Google-based service.
5. Fare-collection statistics from municipal operators.
6. Boarding and alighting surveys using TransitWand
7. Occupancy surveys.8. Graf of roads
network.
1. Ensuring the network meets user needs,
2. Making the network more cost efficient to provide,
3. Ensuring the network serves the city in the best possible way,
4. Consider transit’s contribution to wider policy objectives - economic development, environmental protection & social well being.
Iterative process: Network Examination & Kyiv Transport Model – all
scenarios of network optimization were tested on the transport model
1. Analysis of the current situation,
2. Monitoring and interpretation of existing situations,
3. Modelling of future transport infrastructure and areas of socio-economic development,
4. Scenarios of improvement and optimization,
5. Preparations for the dynamic operation of transport systems.
Kyiv territory was divided into 407 transport districts (including suburbs):
All collected data was also corresponded to these 407 transport districts
Mobility surveys – key figures and examples of results:
Key contractor – Kyiv International Institute of Sociology: 30K successful questionnaires were
received by phone survey,
5K successful questionnaires were received by web-site survey for specific correspondences identification
GTFS data was provided by private company which provides Google maps-based services for public transport users:
3098 stops of public transport
Data source:
Transferred to Visum:
• Operators,• Routes,• Travels,• Stops,• Schedule of public
transport work
All public Transport of Kyiv:• Underground,• City train (Bahn),• Bus• Trolleybus• Marshrutkas (small
buses)• Suburban bus
Google-based service for public transport users
Municipal public transport operator
(provides GPS tracks)
OD-matrix of whole Kyiv region based on the data of Ukrainian largest mobile operator – Kyivstar company:
Kyiv
Chernobyl
Bila Tserkva
• Kyivstar market share in Kyiv region about 55%(about M1,8 subscribers),
• OD-matrix of whole Kyiv region – it was almost impossible task without mobile data,
• As a result of this exercise we understand how many people traveling form suburbs to Kyiv each day, for example:• Brovary – 20%,• Irpin – 21%,• Borispil – 12%
• City now understand where better to construct interchanges and what capacity of its should be:
Daily migration from the largest “sleeping” district was also calculated with the help of mobile data:
• Population of Troeshyna –450 000, with estimates that in the next 15 years this figure will grow by 120 000.
• 236 000 (59% of population)daily (working week) commute outside of Troeshyna, posing a serious burden on public transport and the nearest metro stations:• М2: Petrovka, Heroyiv
Dnepra, Minska, Obolon,• М1: Lesnaya and
Chernigivska
• In feasibility study of 4-th metro line construction city also using mobile data.

• Scenario A, Short term – Transit route changes that require minimal infrastructure works, such as simple changes to existing road intersections.
• Scenario B, Medium term - Route changes that require more significant infrastructure works, such as catenary extensions and bus priority measures to segregate traffic.
• Scenario C, Long term mass transit options
Scenario A and B pragmatic optimisation of the existing public transport network
Focus upon: CREATION - DELETION - MODIFICATION
As a result of Network Examination & Kyiv Transport Modeling 3 scenarios were developed and approved by team:
