Compassion Fatigue Resilience and RecoveryFeeling worn out by the demands of your work?
This session offers insight into the impact of compassion fatigue on those working with the seriously injured, ill or traumatized individuals. Explore what approaches are effective to re-energize and replenish yourself when the demands seem overwhelming. Recognizing and addressing compassion fatigue will increase your ability to assist injured parties with a successful return to work.
Dr. Cary A. Brown, PhDAssociate Professor, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Alberta.
Dr. Brown has practiced clinically as an occupational therapist, department supervisor and academic in Canada, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. She teaches and does research in the areas of knowledge translation, health literacy, sleep and chronic pain across the life span. Her interest in disordered sleep is linked to her research activities in chronic pain, one of which received the Canadian Pain Society – Pain Awareness Award 2010 for Knowledge Translation activities.
Sleep: The under-recognized foundation for return to workResearch clearly demonstrates that restorative sleep is just as important to our health and ability to function as diet and activity. However, as a society we know little about sleep and often make poor decisions that contribute to insomnia and other sleep-related problems. As a consequence we have decreased emotional and physical function, lowered pain threshold and decreased resilience for recovery from injuries and stress. This workshop will provide a plain
language overview of the physiology of sleep and explore the functional implications of sleep
deprivation. We will also review common and accessible sleep screening tools appropriate for the return to work practice setting.
