Each and every page of this magazine highlights the wonderful work of this vibrant school community, and this publication reminds us of the breadth and depth of talent we have amongst our students, staff and parents. We can reflect with pride on the achievements and the efforts of our students on the sporting field, in the visual and performing arts, in service to the community, through their leadership and in their academic pursuits. And, we acknowledge the energy, skill and talent of staff, parent volunteers and students who have made so many of the projects we have undertaken this year possible.

Throughout 2013 the Heads of Faculty and Student Wellbeing team have both led many initiatives which are enriching our school community and our academic programs. We all understand that learning transforms lives and that learning that occurs in a school where values matter

produces graduates who are curious and creative and whose performance matches their abilities.

Our Heads of Faculty, under the strong leadership of Ms Ann Sullivan, Director of Teaching and Learning, have undertaken a detailed review of our curriculum and are leading the implementation of initiatives that will further assist our students to master content and skills and to develop the capacity to be independent learners. Our increased emphasis on teaching students how to think, as well as delivering key subject content, is resulting in greater student engagement and increasing levels of achievement. We are excited by what lies ahead as we role out our ‘thinking curriculum’ more completely in 2014 and reap the benefits of the improved IT infrastructure that has been rebuilt throughout this year.

Our Wellbeing Team, under the spirited leadership of Mrs Leah Kelly, Deputy Principal, have further embedded the philosophies and procedures of Restorative Practices within the school community. These strategies are designed to enable our young people to develop their self-knowledge and ability to empathise with others. As a result we have noticed our students taking greater responsibility for their choices and decision making. The Wellbeing Team is also developing an exciting age specific pastoral care program that will be gradually rolled out throughout 2014.

Another area of review and change has been the Camps program. Under the fervent leadership of Mrs Leanne Outtram the sequence of Camp experiences being offered to the students of Bayview is increasing in breadth and depth of experience. The new Year 9 City Experience

was a wonderful success and the details are highlighted later in this magazine.

The Bayview Parents and Friends Association has energetically and creatively planned a series of events aimed at developing a stronger sense of community amongst the parent body. The P&F is a vital part of the fabric of our school community and the unique opportunities that are created for staff and parent dialogue are highly valued. The Cabaret and Golf Day were wonderful occasions to share stories and develop friendships. Stay tuned to the Newsletter in 2014 for more exciting events that Parents and Friends of Bayview can be part of.

The range of co-curricular pursuits that the students have undertaken in the Performing & Creative Arts, Sporting arena and service to the community has been extensive. Each of these activities develops in the individual student a strong

sense of commitment and team skills.

This year marks the last year of Loreto Sisters living and serving in Portland. Bayview has been blessed over the last ten years to have the presence, wisdom and leadership of Sr Denise Desmarchelier on the College Board. Her positive contribution to the school, along with the commitment of all the Loreto sisters before her have left us a great legacy of wisdom and vision that we can take forward into the future.

The staff at Bayview have worked tirelessly throughout this year and on behalf of the students, their families I sincerely thank them for all they have contributed to the College.

MRS LEAH KELLYAs Deputy Principal one of my key roles is to ensure that student wellbeing is a central focus of the school and that a holistic approach is taken to educating the students of Bayview College. Bayview College encourages students to live the “Bayview Way” in their actions and attitude. The “Bayview Way” includes acting with compassion, integrity, responsibility and respect towards others. We hope to nurture and encourage these values in our students and provide opportunities for all students to succeed and

grow into socially aware, tolerant, and responsible citizens. The Wellbeing team and staff have implemented restorative practices this year. The aim of restorative practices is to encourage students to take responsibility for their actions, reflect on their behaviour and where necessary repair harm to relationships. Developing respectful relationships between students, parents and staff is at the heart of this intiative and it has underpinned all student management dealings this year. As a consequence of the

introduction of restorative practices we have seen greater engagement in class activities, increased communication with parents and a reduction in repeat behaviours. In 2014 we shall be introducing an integrated pastoral program across a number of year levels. These programs will be tailored to the specific needs of each different year. We aim to provide time to explicitly teach essential life skills and develop our community partnerships, spirituality and overall student engagement.

YEAR 7 COORDINATIONMISS ABBY TAYLORYear 7 is a very exciting year marked by great change; from a new school environment, new teachers, subjects and friends, to new expectations and more independence. All of these things offer opportunities for excitement, success and fun, however, with this, comes also a level of challenge. As we approach the end of 2013, I congratulate the Year 7’s of 2013 on their successes and positive contributions to Bayview. To name only a few events; from the beginning of the year at the Dunkeld camp retreat, to the swimming carnival, athletics and buddies movie night in Term 1; Cross country, tree planting with Pacific Hydro and a buddies pizza lunch in Term 2; Welcome Spring BBQ and scavenger hunt in Term

3; and the Butterfly Foundation and MotoV8 workshops in Term 4, we have seen courteous, proud and enthusiastic participation, consistent with the Bayview Way and outstanding achievements. Congratulations again on such successes, for ‘surviving’ your first year of secondary school and all the very best for 2014 as you continue your journey here at Bayview College.

MOVIE NIGHTIn the last week of Term 1, we held our first buddy event. As a collective, the buddies decided on a movie night, held in the Performing Arts Centre, here at Bayview College. A number of the Year 11 buddies played a key role in the organization of the event. We started with a snack of fruit and popcorn, in full movie spirit, and then moved in to a range of team building activities in the gymnasium, facilitated by the buddies. We then all headed up to the PAC for Hotel Transylvania. There were lots of chuckles coming from the students, and the staff for that matter, throughout the movie and ratings were good! All in all, the Buddies Movie night was a big success. Well done and thank you to all of those who helped make it happen.

Page 7: RETRO Bayview College School Magazine 2013

CAMPIn week 1 of Term 1, the new Year 7’s of 2013 went to Dunkeld Retreat for a 3 day camp. After students set up their cabins and had some lunch they began their first round of activities. The camp hosts a range of exciting and fun activities, including a low ropes course, bush art, team challenges, archery, flying fox and a giant swing. Students reported that they “loved” the camp experience.

One student loved it so much that he said he’d like to be in Year 7 next year so that he could go again! The camp was a terrific opportunity for the Year 7’s to meet their peers and teachers in a fun and relaxed environment, prior to commencing classes.

YEAR 9 TAFE TASTER DAY

MIDDLE YEARSMRS SHARON CLARKWe have had a wonderful year with the Year 8/9 cohort. The group has seen the introduction of the Middle Years Leaders open to the Year 9 students. During this initiation year, students have been afforded many new opportunities. However, without the whole Year 8/9 student participation in school and community the year would not have been such a success. In May the Year 8’s attended the Grampians Retreat Camp. Against extreme weather conditions all students who set out made it to the top of Mt Abrupt. The triumph and sense of achievement was really only felt after returning to base camp after a long hot shower. The Year 9 calendar was full. The new, highly successful City Camp has been warmly welcomed. Thank you to Mrs Outtram for her

tireless hours of planning and implementation of this camp. The Year 9 group has participated in Binge Busters and PEER (helping skills for life). Thank you to Mrs Haselton for organising “Try a career day, TAFE TASTER” program. During term 4 “The Resilience Project”, by Hugh Van Cuylenburg, gave the Year 7 to 10 students a motivating presentation on “How to be Happy”. Congratulations to all Year 9’s for rising to the test of exams. The results have been pleasing.2014 will see many new opportunities and challenges afforded to the Middle Years, particularly to the Year 8 group. I look forward to working with all students as they accept the challenges of moving forward, while they continue to learn and grow.

SENIOR YEARSMS KYM MENZELSENIOR YEARS COORDINATOR

It has been a big year as our Senior Students have navigated their way through Years 10, 11 & 12. There have been many chances for students to develop leadership and personal development skills alongside their academic studies.

Our Student Leaders and House Captains have attended the Grip Leadership Conference as part of the leadership development program in the senior years. Ben Cottier and Julia Orlando received Kwong Lee Dow Scholarships and from December 2012 until July 2014 have the opportunity to attend multiple team, peer, leadership, success and career skills building days. The Future Leaders of Industry Program through Portland Aluminium was a success once again, with all 12 Year 11 students who applied receiving places. The students were mentored through personal and professional development skills by local workplace professionals. Aside from these workshops, the Year 10s have continued to develop their leadership skills through the Innovative Games program at local primary schools and the Great South West Challenge.

Bayview College is blessed to have a dedicated team of senior years’ teachers. Our Year 10s are constantly practising the skills they need for both the VCE and VCAL programs. After classes each afternoon, students are seen working alongside their teachers getting extra help and guidance. Being able to combine VCE, VCAL and VET studies enhances the individual nature of programs that we are able to provide for all students. Our Vocational Education and Training program through South West TAFE and partnering with WESTVIC employment services has seen senior students gain qualifications in Community Services, Engineering and Fabrication, Plumbing, Hairdressing and Automotive. Being able to provide these opportunities for students to develop their own career pathways is rewarding for the school and our local community.

To the parents, thank you for your involvement in your sons’ and daughters’ education. Working in partnership with you through phone calls and meetings only

enhances our pastoral care program and allows us to achieve the best outcomes for the students.

We wish the Class of 2013 well with their next set of adventures now that 13 years of school finished with the rigours Year 12 are complete. Thank you for being a big part of our Bayview community.

SCHOOLIES WITH A CAUSEETHAN BEARDWow! What an amazing time I have had!!! Just arrived at Phu Quac Island for a bit of down time, but let me tell you, between all of you and myself, I would much rather be back at the school and hanging out with all of the kids (and teachers) there. I cannot believe how happy all of them were. Coming from the western society and culture that we live in I have, admittedly, become used to a certain level of.....living standard I guess you could say. But going to that commune and seeing what conditions everyone

there had to live in day in and day out, and still have ear-to-ear smiles every time we saw them just really humbled me and taught me that the little things we take for granted, like proper toilets, resources for learning and even just have somewhere to play are nothing without the people and family around you. They are such a tight knit community that make the most of everything they have.

It was an extreme privilege and honour to have the opportunity to come here and visit them, while

giving them a resource that they will use for a long time to come. I like to think that I have made some friends in the commune that I will hopefully get to see again in the future. I have most certainly gained a new perspective on life and will now strive to make the most out of life that I can. This is something that I will never, ever forget.

BAYVIEW GIVES VISITING JAPANESE STUDENTS A TASTE OF AUSTRALIAN CULTURE15 visiting Japanese Students and their teacher enjoyed a taste of Australian culture, when they visited Bayview for 3 weeks. The students from Matsudo High School arrived in Portland on Sunday 21st July. The students were hosted by Bayview Students and their families. The Japanese students had the opportunity to participate in classes within the school, an intensive English Language program and a range of co-curricular activities. They went on a tour of the Port of Portland, where resources are shipped from the Port and make their way to Japan. The students experienced surfing at Cape Bridgewater. The Matsudo Students consolidated their English through daily interactions with students and staff. Many of the Bayview families prepared day trip itineraries for their visit, ensuring they had an opportunity to see as much ofVictoria as possible.

Page 15: RETRO Bayview College School Magazine 2013

BAYVIEW STUDENTS VISIT JAPANTen Bayview College students spent 14 days in Japan as part of the annual exchange program to Matsudo Kokusai High School.

The Japanese Exchange program originally started at Bayview in 1996 and has provided the opportunity for over 200 children to experience both a different culture both in the school and home environment.

The students winged their way to Osaka, Japan, then continued to Hiroshima early the following morning. Coming from a cold winter in Portland the students were surprised by the humidity which made walking around for long periods of time a little exhausting.

The first six days the students had the opportunity to visit historic sites, shop in the traditional craft markets, Tokyo Disneyland, Atomic Bomb Peace Park and taste the famous Miyajima delicacies.

Everyone was intrigued by the unique shops which made shopping an appealing pastime. The highlight for the majority of the students was the vending machines, which serve up an array of interesting, mundane and some highly useful items.

On day six the students had the opportunity to meet up with the host families in Tokyo then travelled to Matsudo, located in northern Chiba Prefecture, Japan. They were introduced by their Japanese host family

to the school. This gave the Bayview students the prospect to consolidate their Japanese by attending daily “Japanese as a Second Language” classes as well as participating in day trips with their host families.

Many of the Matusdo families prepared itineraries for our visiting students ensuring they got an opportunity to see as much of Matsudo and the surrounding area as possible.

HUMANITIESMS YVONNE ANSON

Humanities covers a variety of subjects including Accounting, Business Management, Geography, History and Legal Studies. At Bayview these subjects are covered at various year levels from Year 7 to Year 12.

2013 has been a very busy year with the introduction of the new National Curriculum for History from Years 7 to 10 and the development of the new National Curriculum for Geography to be introduced in 2014. VCE classes have been run in all 5 subjects offered within the Humanities area with VCE Units 3 & 4 taught for Geography, Accounting and Business Management.

At Year 7 students learn about “What is History” and “What is Geography”. They develop the basic knowledge and skills so they can succeed in these subjects in Year 8 and beyond. Studying Otzi the 5300 year old ice mummy and making artefacts from Ancient Greece were the highlights for the Year 7 History classes this year. In Geography students have learnt about the extremes of Antarctica and how maps, graphs and aerial photographs can help us interpret different places on Earth.

Medieval History, the Asia Pacific region and the Earth’s environments are some of the topics enjoyed by Year 8s. Students used their geography skills to plan a trip around the world and the study of Asian Pacific countries was completed with the

“flag day”. This has become a very popular way to finalise the Unit with a feast of student made “flag cakes”.

At Year 9 students get out and about in Geography. The GPS units donated by the P&F have been put to great use during coastal fieldwork. Students used the GPS to map features on Nuns beach and shared their knowledge about the beach with each other through a fantastic array of class presentations. As a part of Year 9 camp all visited Werribee Zoo and attended the “Eat or Be Eaten” education session - a great introduction to the Endangered Species unit. The Year 9’s and VCE Legal studies students also had fun participating in “Parliament Alive” where educators from Parliament House in Canberra ran a mock session of Federal Parliament.

The plight of people in Rwanda is one of the many interesting topics studied in Year 10. Students have been challenged to think about inequalities across the world, why they exist and what actions are being taken.

VCE Geography students completed a major fieldwork study on Portland Aluminum smelter, looking at it as an important resource for Portland.

FIELD WORKHumanities subjects are taught using a very wide variety of tasks and techniques. Across the year levels students have completed many different types of work including fieldwork at Nun’s Beach

and Alcoa, research projects, essays, mapping, graphing, completing presentations, solving historical mysteries and making models, artefacts, timelines and posters.

Next year we are looking forward to the introduction of the new Geography curriculum which includes fieldwork at all year levels. Humanities is also running a “Business Alive” elective which will give year 9 and 10 students a taste of Accounting, Business Management and Legal Studies to prepare them for VCE.

NOODLES FOR A CAUSEYear 12 Geography students decided to embark on an exercise to help raise money for a boy in Vietnam to continue on with his schooling. The 2012 Year 12 Geography students raised $60, which is all that is needed to sponsor 1 child to go to school through the Thanh Loc Project, we continued to sponsor the same child this year. Each student ate boiled noodles for 2 weeks, forfeiting their normal lunch and putting the money they would normally spend towards the sponsorship. The students enjoyed the exercise, bonding with each other over a bowl of hot noodles, but also knowing they had helped Tran Minh Khoi attend school.

SCIENCE MR HAIBO WANGScience has been influencing people’s lives for a few centuries. The relevance and mystery of science to us is a motivation for students’ learning. In the past hundreds of years, thousands of scientists have contributed their intelligence and adventures to the development of modern science. As knowledge takers, learning from previous generations is as important as experimenting. In school, in classrooms, students need experimental activities to experience the practical parts of Science, but we are not inventing anything at this stage. Theory is still dominating the whole secondary Science study.

Science teachers at Bayview College work hard to promote Science learning in their own ways. By combining curriculum learning with extra curricular activities, the students are motivated and strengthened. Their results are evidence that students at Bayview are performing well compared with other students bench marked in the state.

ICASThe ICAS Science test was undertaken by all students from Year 7 to Year 10 in Bayview College. The results of the competition reflect the improvement trend in Science teaching and learning. Patrick Webster, Eilish Drought, Alice

Teachers in the Science Faculty are always following the new development of Science and technology. We present this knowledge to our students to prepare them for their further study.

PHYSICS IN ACTIONYear 12 Physics students enjoyed a day of ‘physics in action’ when they attended Luna Park for the day. The students shared the Park with 600 other physics students from across Victoria in what is now an annual event. The park is shut to the general public and the students literally take over. They have 12 selected rides and they complete a series of worksheets, especially designed by a group of physics teachers, which focus on the practical side of the ‘motion’ section studied in Unit 3 Physics. The worksheets are challenging and promote much thought and discussion which is great for helping them to grasp some of the more challenging parts of the course.

Taylor all Year 9 and Laura Whitehead in Year 8 were awarded a Distinction, which means that they are in the top 10% among the participants in the state. The Science faculty has been working cooperatively to tailor the teaching program to align with National Curriculum and Bayview College’s thinking school philosophy, which prepares the younger students to take VCE Science.

Teaching Science outside the classroom makes Science more interesting and relevant to our students and promotes Science learning. 7A class visited the Auto museum to investigate simple machines. The class also made catapults in the class when looking at levers. 7B Science class investigated Simple machines and completed a playground equipment analysis.

SCIENCE IN THE OUTDOORS Year 9/10 elective students undertook environmental studies and revegetation works on farms at Cashmore and Mt Richmond with Conservation Volunteers. Year 9A Science undertook field work at Fawthrop Lagoon.

SIC SCIENCE 9/10 elective students visited Active Health and Portland Hospital to discuss careers in medicine and allied health.

MATHEMATICSMR HAIBO WANGAll members in the Mathematics Faculty have been working hard to promote Mathematics learning through 2013 school year and implement the National Curriculum.

In 2013, students at Bayview College participated in three different Mathematics Competitions: Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians 2013 Enrichment Stage, International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS), and the 25th Annual Mathematics Contest hosted by The School of Information Technology of Deakin University.

Joshua Mitchell, Hamish Clark and Beau Stafford all from Year 8 took part in the 16 week challenge in the Enrichment Stage of “Euler”. We congratulate their effort, enthusiasm and can-do attitude of facing the challenge and working to the best of their abilities. Joshua was awarded a Credit, just one mark off Distinction. Mr Clint Foster was the mentor of the boys and guided them to solve problems with Mathematical thinking.

ICAS & NAPLANICAS Mathematics has been taken by all students from Year 7 to Year 10 in Bayview College. The results of the competition reflect the improving trend of Mathematics teaching and learning in the school. Scott Leathbridge, Eilish Drought, Alice Taylor, Joshua Mitchell, Campbell Reefman and Charlie Ryan were awarded a Distinction, which means that they

are in the top 10% among the participants in the state.

NAPLAN results of Year 9 show the trend of improving compared to their results in Year 7. Data shows that Bayview College student’s results for both Year 7 and 9 are above the state average in all aspects. The Year 7 and 9 teaching teams know their students well and implement differentiated teaching strategies to offer the opportunity for each individual student to reach their learning potential.

Promoting excellence in numeracy is one of the programs undertaken by the Mathematics Faculty in 2013 school year. All Mathematics teachers worked collectively with a numeracy consultant from Creating Real Mathematicians to implement teaching mathematics through problem solving and the numeracy senior advisor of National Partnerships from Independent School Victoria to use informative assessment for differentiated teaching.

In the week of May 27th to 30th, we had a full week of intensive model teaching for our mathematics teachers of junior school. Making mathematics relevant and teaching Mathematics through problems is one of the keys to motivate young students. Even though it was only a one week program, it will impact our teaching and benefit us forever. This program was funded by Independent Schools Victoria. The National Partnership of ISV also offer us support by

sending a senior numeracy advisor to our school 3 days each term through the year. The advisor worked with individual teachers for lesson planning, implementation, classroom observation and feedback.

As we all know this is the first year of National Curriculum for Mathematics. There has been a lot of aligning the topics and sequence of teaching, especially for the topics that have changed between year levels. Mathematics Faculty is a united and productive team. We are willing to change to embrace the new era of teaching to accommodate the new generation learners and technology.

BAYVIEW MATHEMATICS COMPETITORSMercedes Schwedes, Aren Tober, Sarah Cottier, Runu Hann & Grace Davey participated the 25th Annual Mathematics Contest hosted by Deakin University in Geelong on Friday 30th August. Almost two hundred Year 10 students from 23 different schools took part in this team based and solo competition. Bayview team and individual students achieved good results with Mercedes ranking at 20th and Aren ranking at 41st out of 185 participating students. The students enjoyed the day and would like to thank Mr Morrow for organising the trip and taking the team to the competition and Mr Foster for training and mentoring the team. ENGLISHMRS DEBRA CRESPAN The study of English engages students in reading, viewing, listening to, writing, creating, comparing, researching and talking about a range of text types from the simple to the complex, from texts dealing with concrete and straightforward information to those dealing with increasingly complex and abstract issues and ideas. English teachers encourage students to explore the meaning of texts and how meaning is conveyed. They introduce critical approaches to the ideas and thinking contained in texts and support students in the development of critical understanding about the ways writers and speakers control language to influence their listeners, readers and viewers.

THE NATIONAL CURRICULUMTEACHING AND LEARNING The ability of an individual to manipulate language to deliver his/her message confidently and in a clear and precise manner is not necessarily a talent with which one is born. This skill is honed through communication interactions, misunderstandings and revisions, critical feedback and constant practice; all in the hope of being more clearly understood. As our adolescents immerse themselves in the latest communication and gaming devices, and become increasingly known as the ‘entertain me’ generation, we witness many of them abandon

the pursuit of reading. It is not unusual to hear a VCE student claim (with pride) “that the only books or reading I have done, is the English novels, because I had to.” I can guarantee that any hour spent reading will be of far greater educational benefit, than any hour spent gaming. Reading is not just ‘school business’ and I would encourage all parents and caregivers to join with us in encouraging the development of this skill. Be it on a tablet, kindle, in a newspaper, a special interest magazine or even the paperback novel; the ability to read and comprehend quickly and accurately will never go out of fashion.

NAPLAN & ICASOur Year 7&9 students once again participated in the NAPLAN and students in Years 7-10 also participated in ICAS; a national benchmark test from the University of New South Wales. ICAS and NAPLAN contribute data to enable student literacy tracking and are used to inform curriculum development, allowing us to target specific areas of literacy for explicit focus. High performers in the ICAS competition include:Year 7: Sophie Russell Year 8: Campbell Reefman, Zoe Sharrock, Charlie Ryan, Selwyn Williams & Amelia Macklin Year 9: Alice Taylor, Eilish Drought, Claire Charman & Liam ConradYear 10: Kayla Gorry, Tom Williams, Madeline Englezos & Sheldon Lynn

Notably, students achieving in the top 10% amongst those who participated in this prestigious competition, received a Distinction Certificate and a school recognition medallion: Year 8 – Campbell Reefman (96 percentile)Year 9–Eilish Drought (96 percentile), Year 10–Kayla Gorry (93 percentile), Our Year 8 Alice Taylor (99 percentile) should be especially proud of her High Distinction Recognition.

PUBLIC SPEAKING & DEBATINGTo have the confidence to deliver an opinion with authority and justify that conviction with clarity is a skill that is highly sought after. All students from Years 7 -12 are explicitly taught these skills and supported to develop spoken texts of increasing complexity using digital, visual and audio support. Year 9 students immersed themselves in the Podcasting Unit, using digital support and editing software to present a professional film review. Margaret and David from the ABC may soon find their jobs under threat. Debating activities continued at a Year 10 level and this is an exciting and challenging way to develop confidence and public speaking skills in a supportive team environment.

Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady (2011), the high-tech Batman suit for Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Harry Potter’s famous Hogwarts costume. The Annual Year 12 Art exhibition of Bayview College, Portland Secondary College, Heywood and District Secondary College and Casterton Secondary took place at the Portland Arts Centre, where the individual talents and creations of our students were once again showcased. The Year 12 Studio Arts students were provided with an in depth exam revision session at the Hamilton Art Gallery by the gallery director, Mr. Danny McGowan and education officer, Mrs. Sue McGinnity. Students also visited the Elizabeth Arthur private gallery where they viewed new works in marquette form by the famous Inge King. Bayview also held the first exhibition at the Julia Street Creative Arts centre, showcasing the VCE Textiles, Wood and Visual Communication Design folios and student work. Bayview had the privilege of being the organizing school this year for the Portland Music Festival and performers and back stage crew certainly provided a quality evening for all. Many thanks go to The Arts faculty members and assistants for providing such engaging classes and activities throughout the year.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGNMRS SHARON CLARK2013 saw the implementation of a new Study Design which has given the subject Visual Communication Design greater scope and depth. Compulsory study focus areas include: Communication Design (Graphic Design, Information Design, Digital, Book Illustration, Packaging, Brand Identity and Illustration), Environmental Design (Architecture Design, Interior design, Landscape Design, Set Design and Exhibition/Display Design) and Industrial Design (Engineering Design, Product Design, Furniture and Fashion design).

PHOTOGRAPHYStudents embraced the return to the Photography elective during 2013. Combining traditional hand made and digital techniques, students created highly effective work for their folio and exhibition spaces.

This diversity of subjects broadens career paths.Students in Year’s 7-10 have worked from predetermined briefs set by the teacher. Examples of work undertaken have included: stamp designs, packaging, symbols for publishing companies and self-promotion and book covers, architecture and perspective and paraline drawing. Students undertaking Units 1 to 4 had a busy start to the year travelling to Melbourne to see TOP DESIGN at the Melbourne Museum. This was a fantastic opportunity to see the best students’ work in the state. This serves as excellent motivation for the year ahead. Students

also visited Ink and Spindle, an environmentally aware textile manufacturer. This session was fun and informative, and is also a requirement for the Coursework in Unit 3 on Professional Practice.

Many thanks to Mr Rodger Hampshire (Portland Laser Cutting), Mrs Helen Bennett and Mr Andrew Bryant (Portland Sign works) for their on going support with this subject.

PRODUCT DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (WOOD) MR ROGER NORTON

Another year in the workshop has been successfully completed for all the year levels in the school. We have introduced some new projects, some new techniques and some new tools. We have developed ply veneering over the last few years and this year we tried using fabric as a veneer for the first time in Year 9. We have a beautiful looking new lamp project in Year 10 and a game making project in Year 8. Our VCE students continue to produce great individually designed projects in Year 12 and our Year 11 students build comfortable, practical upholstered chairs. Our Woodwork Club is well supported at lunchtimes and after school. We receive and are always looking for parental assistance and donated materials. We continue to stress the relevance of our

subject in terms of employment and tertiary education. Product Design and Technology (Wood) now applies itself to not only the obvious and traditional building careers in the trades, but also as a directly relevant subject for the design and manufacturing tertiary degree courses, such as aeronautical engineering, civil engineering, architecture, product design and industrial design. It’s a great way to develop better eye to hand coordination and design skills in young people. We continue to seek student and parent feedback about what we are doing in the workshop to maintain a vibrant and productive subject that will benefit our students here and after they have left school.

THE PERFORMING ARTSMISS BONITA GERALDENE 2013 has been year of masterpieces and success. Throughout the year, the 7 and 8 students in both Music and Drama have worked to master their skills and create performance pieces. The Music students learnt the instruments in a rock band and performed a final song to an audience. The Drama students created performances ranging from Melodrama to Characterisation.

The Annual School Production is always a hit; this year was no exception with The Wizard of Oz playing to 5 sold out shows. These shows are the wonderful success they are due to the contribution of our whole Bayview community. Firstly the hard work, dedication and complete professionalism of a very talented cast were inspirational. With a collection of wonderful senior students to lead an energetic and willing junior cast, this group of young actors is now a tight unit, a connection they will have forever. The production doesn’t run without the months of preparation and back stage support teams. We had staff, parents, current students, past students and community members with all hands on deck preparing the costumes, back stage, hair, make-up, set and props, ticketing, supper and lots of little things they certainly didn’t go unnoticed. The help for all elements of the performance are truly appreciated and all involved benefit positively from it in so many ways. At the Annual Portland Music Festival Bayview was represented by 2 of the students performing groups. Their cover versions of songs, and unique interpretation was warmly received by the audiences on both nights.

We are looking forward to seeing what 2014 brings in the Performing Arts.

FOOD AND NUTRITIONMS PAT CZERNIAKAs always, in retrospect, the year has passed with alarming speed. The pressure to achieve desired student outcomes within what seems to be less time in the classroom presents a challenge not unique to Food and Nutrition. The kitchen and adjoining classroom has had regular use not only by classes studying Food and Nutrition but by other subjects and classes within the school. VCAL students, Schoolies With a Cause students, students of Japanese, Geography and Health and Human Development as well as Bayview College’s Parents and Friends group have used the rooms throughout the year. On occasion community groups have also negotiated to use the kitchens. The Year 7 students had an intermittent exposure to Food and Nutrition. Our budding cooks have produced edible items such as tacos, macaroni cheese and fried rice within a given framework of time, while being mindful of safety and hygiene. The Year 8 students under the guidance of Mrs Helen MacPherson have built on the skills learned in Year 7. The tantalising smell of muffins, chocolate pudding and chicken and vegetable stir fry have wafted through the corridors to the exasperation of students nearby. The Year 9/10 courses, Cuisines Of The World and Cooking For Special Occasions have required students to exert much greater personal responsibility in terms of recipe selection, submission of food orders and the effective management of class time to achieve an end product that is contributed to a buffet style presentation for the whole class to enjoy. These learning experiences teach our young cooks

many organisational skills that will stand them in good stead in future life. The cuisines of Morocco, Spain, Vietnam, and China were experienced and extended the palates of class members. A Christmas dinner, BBQ, morning/afternoon tea and A Taste Of Vietnam evening meal for the Schoolies With A Cause students and parents were highlights of the entertaining unit. I must acknowledge the invaluable assistance of Mrs Karen Tober who has assisted in the practical sessions as a parent volunteer for the last 8 years. The extra hands, eyes and ears have helped our young people stay safe and on track in a classroom filled to the brim with noise and activity. I am appreciative of the expertise she has been able to contribute and her willingness to often be present for large scale functions catered for by Bayview students after hours.Ms Dot Leathbridge and Mrs Ros Kerz have facilitated the success of this subject through weekly grocery shopping and area maintenance. A grateful thanks is given to both ladies.Bayview is fortunate to have a wonderfully equipped and attractive work space in Food and Nutrition. The ability to develop skills relating to the provision of nutritious family food is imperative to the future health and wellbeing of all Australians as we battle an obesity epidemic. The adage of when we know better, we do better certainly applies here.I would encourage our young people to spend time in the family kitchen preparing, tasting and experimenting with the wonderful range of foods we have in our lucky country.Bon Apetit everyone!!

HEALTH & PE MRS DONNA FEARON Year 10 students were involved in the Innovative Games Program this year. This involved students creating their own minor games and developing their coaching skills. Students then went in to Portland Primary School and All Saints Primary School and taught these games to students in Year 4-6. Learning to Drive & Keys 2 Drive Programs were also delivered to Year 10 students, this time by VicRoads. These programs involved students becoming familiar with aspects of road safety and a broadening of their understanding of driving conditions. Students were then required to complete a comprehensive road safety assignment which gave them a further appreciation of what skills they need to have in order to become competent and safe drivers. VCE Health and Human Development students gained valuable examination tips and advice from author and examiner Sonia Goodacre who came in for a seminar earlier this year. In Year 9 Health we have been working alongside Community Liaison Officer Lee-Anne Nelson from Portland Police to offer lessons on healthy relationships. The students were able to discuss the structure of healthy and unhealthy relationships whilst also gaining knowledge from Lee-Anne in a range of topic areas including family violence and cyber bullying. More recently, Year 7 and Year 8 have been piloting new fitness units in their PE lessons. They have been looking at different ways to get fit. This has included circuit training in school and taster sessions including water aerobics, fitness boot camps and classes at the YMCA.

Bayview College Year of VCAL,VCAL stands for the ‘Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning’ and thus the focus for this group of students is to learn through doing. Students are expected to take on various leadership roles and to plan and implement activities that enable real life learning to occur. For some, the challenges are quite daunting and significant growth has to occur in order for the outcomes of each area to be met. Outcomes in the areas of Literacy, Numeracy, Work Related Skills and Personal Development must all be achieved to a satisfactory standard in order for the students to attain their VCAL certification. VCAL students also complete either a School Based Apprenticeship 1 day per week or a work placement arrangement is made. Furthermore, VET courses at TAFE are attended on a Wednesday afternoon for most. It is a busy and varied schedule for all students.2013 has been a busy and productive year for the VCAL class. A combined Intermediate and Senior group have faced many challenges and have completed a number of ‘Applied Learning’ activities throughout the year that have not only benefited their personal learning and development but also the wider community. The year began with the group learning about the requirements of each area of the course and the ways in which the outcomes would be met. Project work was

the focus, with the group having to work together to plan and implement a major project. This involved researching concepts such as social diversity, meeting procedures, negotiation, communication and the use of ICT in promotion and planning. The first major project decided upon was the ‘Fluro Friday’ event. Initially the group wanted to put on a Sunday music afternoon on the green, but through the planning process, they realised that the weather in the month of May was not conducive to this type of outdoor event. With further negotiation and discussion, the ‘Fluro Friday’ event was agreed upon and planning underway. Students put a lot of time and effort into the planning of the evening, however, it was not supported by the youth of Portland and had to be cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. Although this was disappointing for the group, the evaluation process that followed helped the students to identify areas in which they could have improved or changes that may have ensured greater success. Making community connections is also a focus of the VCAL program and this was something that all students embraced. All students chose a local community group and researched the role of that group in Portland. Students had to interview a spokesperson from their chosen group and complete an oral presentation on their findings. Further to this

connection, students then had to plan an activity that would raise awareness of the community group researched and/or plan an event that would raise money to be donated. A variety of activities occurred ranging from volunteering at Loaves and Fishes to selling cupcakes for the RSPCA. Students also completed a TAFE course of Certificate 2 in Volunteering throughout Term 3. This was then followed up with the students completing volunteer work with Conservation Volunteers, the Salvation Army and the SWAC Team. The final activity for VCAL 2013 was the planning and implementation of the very successful Freeza Breakfest Gig held on the Friday evening of the Upwelling festival. In conjunction with the Glenelg Shire Council Youth Officer, Hayley Dunning, the VCAL class worked from start to end in the planning and running of the Breakfest DJ Event. Students met weekly with Ms Dunning and worked through all of the requirements that are necessary to put on such an event. Staging, lighting, security, entertainment, canteen, first aid and many more elements had to be organised and implemented by the group. The event was very well supported by local youth and the class worked tirelessly on the night to reap the rewards of their hard work. Many other activities and tasks have been completed along the way in all areas of the VCAL course. We hope that the class of 2014 is already thinking about the types of things that interest them and how they can put their interests into practical measures as the applied learners of the school.

COMMENCEMENT SERVICE

At the commencement service for 2013 we welcomed the new students and staff to our community and blessed all those members of the community taking on leadership. We encouraged all students and staff to let their light shine. Each person has unique talents and gifts given to us by God and we need to develop these talents to the best of our ability in order to make the most of our human life.

FAITH AND VALUES Students are encouraged throughout the Faith and Values program to consider the role that faith has in people’s lives. By developing an understanding of Christian traditions, an appreciation of other faith perspectives, and knowledge of the rituals associated with religion, students develop deeper understanding of the human story. A key focus for the Faith and Values team in 2013 was enabling the students to grapple with real life issues and explore them from a faith perspective. One way we achieved this was in the Year 10 program. This year the Year 10 students were introduced to the study of Ethics. All Year 10 students undertook VCE Religion and Society Unit 2 across the year, with the vast majority enrolling through VCAA in this VCE unit, thus gaining extra credit. As people of faith it is important that students are introduced to a number of opportunities to respond to these issues in a practical way. Our annual Winter Appeal, our outreach to the wider community, our knitting club that created blankets for the elderly are all practical ways of expressing our faith and compassion for our neighbour. The Faith and Values team thank each of the ministers of the member Churches, Pr Richard Schwedes, Fr Peter Mather, Fr Peter Sherman, Rev Denise Naish and Rev David Morland for their support, encouragement and leadership of each of the Church services.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

GRIP LEADERSHIP

GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCEOn Friday 15 March, our School Leaders, SRC and House Leaders attended the GRIP Leadership Conference at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre. This was a great opportunity for our School Leaders to interact with School Leaders from all over the state, share their ideas, learn how to make the most of opportunities presented to them as leaders and to become aware of some of

the pitfalls they may face over the next 12 months. Our students attended presentations on how to get a GRIP on leadership, how to give a motivational speech, how to run successful events and how to create a positive culture through their leadership. Throughout the day presentations were broken up with “Loud Noise Sessions” which encouraged students to cheer loudly for their respective schools while representative school leaders took to the stage in a leadership challenge.

A highlight for us was to have School Leader, Dane Handreck, show us his Gangnam dance style! The students gained much from this experience and we look forward to many aspects of the conference being directly translated into a more rewarding year for all our school leaders and the school community they lead. “I really enjoyed the whole experience. The speakers were motivating and I learnt strategies and skills to take back to the school but also to use later in life” said Miguel Merrett.

SPIN A YARNKNITTING CLUB IN THE LIBRARY AT LUNCHTIMEA number of students have spent lunchtimes over winter in the library knitting squares to make rugs for the elderly around Portland and Heywood. We have sent two rugs each to Harbourside Lodge, Heywood Rural Health and Bupa this year.We have been very lucky to receive some donations of wool and needles and some students have learnt a new skill, while others have developed and improved their knitting skills. Knitting is a great way to spend cold winter lunchtimes while also producing a useful item for people in need. The idea was first put by the Faith and Values team as a way of broadening our connection with the community and providing students with a focus for Outreach in the community. This is now an ongoing project and we hope to donate many more rugs during the coming winter. A special thanks to those members of our community who have also helped with the knitting of squares.

RECONCILIATION DAYMRS DEBRA CRESPANJeremy Boyer (Year 12) proved to be an impressive orator, representing the Bayview Community at Reconciliation Week celebrations. His speech outlined what it was like to be an unwitting victim of casual racism. His heartfelt testament and plea for inclusion through interaction was an important lesson for all, giving great hope and a practical direction for reconciliation. The school community was most proud of him. Our Literacy Day celebrations were delayed a week to coincide with Aboriginal literacy day and enable our students and staff to take part in fundraising aimed at closing the gap of reading disadvantage and to support Aboriginal literacy objectives. A healthy sum was donated to this cause.

RIDE 2 SCHOOLAlthough the weather was a little challenging it didn’t stop students from riding to school on National Ride 2 School day. Jack Gorry, Tyler Smith & Damon Huppatz enjoyed a free breakfast once they arrived at school. Thank-you to Glenelg Shire Council who provided sponsorship for this event.

commemorate all those who servedand died in military operations for our country. This year we had representatives at both the Heywood and Portland Anzac Day Marches. Bayview students also assisted with the making of wreaths. This is our way of saying thank-you to those men and woman who fought on our behalf for the freedom we enjoy today.

Bank “Switch and Save” program, recycling tubs were purchased for classrooms, staff offices, the staff room, computer rooms and photocopiers. An easy to coordinate system was put in place with duty students emptying the class containers into special recycling bins during Care Group each Friday. Environment Club members were busy designing and making posters to remind students and staff how to recycle their clean paper and cardboard. The amount of paper recycled has been steadily growing each week - saving natural resources and tip space and also reducing the cost of waste disposal for the school.

NEW FRIENDSHIPS FORGEDTen Year 8 girls from Bayview College had the opportunity to meet and form new friendships with Indigenous students from the Worawa Aboriginal College, Healesville, during their visit to the area in June. The 45 students from Worawa were on a week’s camp to observe the diverse wildlife and the rich human history of the Koroitgundidj people at Tower Hill in Warrnambool. The area contained a rich source of foods for the indigenous people living in the area. Students from Bayview were invited to share the experience, exchange cultural activities with the long term goal of creating a sister school program. Principal Dr Michelle Kearney who attended the day said “It was a wonderful experience for all involved. The students at Worawa come from all over Australia and our students established connections with young women from Darwin, Alice Springs and remote areas of the Territory.” The girls from both schools participated in a range of experiences including boomerang throwing, foraging for bush tucker and observing the koalas, snakes, kangaroos and emus in the area.“It was a fun day. I loved meeting

the girls, learning more about their culture and learning some basic Aboriginal language and I made some new friends!” said Jessie Keegan. Worawa staff has invited Bayview students to visit the school in Healesville, join them on a Dreaming Walk, and continue to build the friendships in 2014. Worawa Aboriginal College is Victoria’s only Independent Aboriginal Community School. The College is located 60 kilometres from Melbourne on 55 hectares in the Yarra Valley that once formed part of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Station. Worawa was established to provide an education for Aboriginal students with a focus onAboriginal teachings and cultural values, academic achievement and the development of practical skills important to everyday life and employment. A number of the graduates of Worawa go on to complete their senior secondarycertificates at other schools, complete tertiary courses and then return to their community as young professionals.

more social ‘feel’ to the P & F and, of course, to raise funds for those extra items that are of benefit to all students. From the suggested ideas a plan of activities for the year was decided and sub groups of interested parents were formed. The first event, the Pastie Drive, was lead by Mrs Marcia Crowe and supported by a large number of parents. This year it was decided to go with Pastie Rolls instead of the traditional Pasties and although this was a bit of a gamble, it was a resounding success. The Pastie construction day began at 9.00am at Halliday’s Butcher’s and continued right through until 6.00pm the same evening. It took the makers a while to work out the system that was most productive, but once on track, the production line was amazing. A huge thank-you goes to Jordan from Halliday’s and to Mark from Baker’s Delight who not only guided our skill development, but also gave generously of their time and ovens to cook the 1400 Pastie rolls. Well done to Marcia for

a fantastic fundraising event. The Bayview Cabaret was the second event set for the year. The focus of this event was to build the Bayview community and not necessarily to raise funds. The venue selected was the Fawthrop Community Centre and entertainment was provided by Jeff Mizzi and Dean Outtram. A small but dedicated committee put the evening together providing an enthusiastic crowd with a great social night. This event will be repeated next year as a response to the fantastic reviews from all who attended. The food was fabulous and everyone danced and socialised with great enthusiasm.Term 4 has been a busy time for the P & F. Early in the term a group of 14 Dad’s headed off for a ‘Men’s Day’ at the Heywood Golf club. The Bayview Community would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to Maree and her faithful committee members for their tireless work over many years. As a consequence of such changes, staff member and parent, Jan Marshall and staff representative, Kaye O’Brien stepped up to take on the role of dual leaders in the P & F this year. Initially a letter was sent out to every Bayview family inviting them to become a part of the Parents & Friends. An early social function in the Japanese rooms was held to gather ideas for the year ahead. This function was attended by approximately 30 parents, each asked to fill out a form that would generate ideas and gather information on the direction that the Bayview community would like the P & F to head. Heywood golf club. The day was perfect and from all accounts a great afternoon, and some mischief, was had by all. The ‘Celebrating 130 years of Loreto in Portland’ was another event that the P & F were involved in. This event was supported by the All Saints and Bayview Parents and friends together. A beautiful lunch was prepared for the many guests that came through the Bayview doors on that day. Thank you to everyone who gave their time to help in any way.The bake sale also took place in Term 4. Thanks to Rita Braune and Sue Anson for co-ordinating this event. Many families donated cakes, slices and other produce that was sold from the front of “The Shoe Cove” – the local shoe shop owned by parents Nicole & David Smith. Junior students volunteered to be on-foot sales persons on the morning, walking around the

local businesses selling the yummy delights. Well done to everyone!Sales of various foods has also been taking place throughout Term 4 on Fridays thanks to Mum, Pauline Gorry and her group of helpers. The students really appreciate this service and are always wonderful customers ready with hungry stomachs and a fist full of coins. The final event scheduled for the year was our ‘High Tea’. This was the brain child of parents Caroline Dark and Nicole Smith who both put in many hours in the preparation and delivery of this wonderful afternoon. Thanks go to the Year 9/10 Visual Communications class, and in particular Stephanie McIntyre, who worked on the design for the posters, tickets and menu for the High Tea. Due to several other events on at the same time the High Tea has been postponed.

Funds raised by the P & F have been spent on many and varied items this year. Items include a kayak for Outdoor Ed, dress making mannequins, irons and art smocks for the Art/Textiles department, payment for the ‘homeless walk’ activity of the Year 9 camp, energy kits for Physics, equipment for Woodwork, microphones, plants, science equipment and many other items too numerous to list. Staff will be asked to submit their ‘wish list’ for 2014, after which decisions will be made as to the allocation of funds remaining. All in all, the Parents and Friends have had a really successful and productive year. Our goal for this year was to increase the parent participation in the school and also to create a more social focus surrounding the events as well as raise funds for the school community. This has most certainly happened and we are both looking forward to seeing the participation grow even further in the coming years. Thanks to all who have supported us in many ways this year. We have really enjoyed ourselves and look forward to the future.

The day was beautiful, not too much sun but no rain. The students all dressed in themes this year, decided by their house captains after having lengthy discussions with their respective houses. All costumes were amazing and made the spirit of the day one of joy and excitement. A house chant competition was introduced this year during the lunch break. All 3 houses had to come up with something fun, loud and meaningful to their particular house. This was the highlight watching the 3 houses try to out do the other while performing their chant. 3 new events were also incorporated into the day – cork scramble, disc search and noodle relay. It was great to see students who don’t usually participate get in the pool and have a go.It was a fantastic day, one that will be remembered for a long time to come.

Eade, Aidan Sealey and Adelene Velthuyzen all finished 3rd. This is an outstanding effort to have a competitor in nearly all age groups finish in the top 3 for the day.

The day also allowed other students to be involved in the running of the sports through their assistance in timing, recording, photographing, announcing and running results to and from the marshals to the judges. The Year 11 Physical Education class was pivotal in these roles and the day would not run as smoothly if these students were not present to assist. A huge thank you also needs to be extended to Andrea Stone, Graham Sealey and John Platt for their expertise on the day.

GLENELG DIVISION SWIMMING

MRS LEANNE OUTTRAM

INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS

The Interhouse athletics were held Wednesday 13th March. The weather was on our side with 40 degree days prior to the carnival but beautiful conditions on the day. The programme saw the girls compete in the track events first this year while the boys completed their field events in the morning. We saw many stars and records being broken and lots of team spirit throughout the day. It was great to see all three houses dress up in their chosen costumes, with Barry “op shop yellow”, MacKillop “camouflage” and Ward “warriors”. It was fantastic to see so many parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, big brothers and sisters coming to support their children. We had some fantastic parent helpers on the day and a big thank you to Karen Tober, Karen Mizzi and Shauna Schultz who timed all day.Ward were the overall champions on the day now claiming victory in the first 2 main sporting events – swimming and athletics. MacKillop took the honors in best dressed gaining valuable points for their house.

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY Seven Students competed in the Greater Western Cross Country competition on Wednesday 19th June at the Hamilton Lake. The students were all geared up for the fast paced run against 8 divisions.

Competitors came from as far as Ballarat, Edenhope, Warrnambool and Horsham. Each age group had at least 25 to 35 competitors bringing in some amazing runners from across the South West region.

Paige Clayton and Meg Schultz both competed in the 13 Years age group with Meg coming in equal 5th and advancing on to the next round in Melbourne.

Meg sprinted the last 50 metres to catch the leaders overtaking 4 or 5 girls to end up in this place. This is a fantastic effort and she should be very proud. Paige also did a fantastic job coming in the middle of the pack, around top 20.

Aaron Shepherd, Aidan Cancian, Liam Nelson, Brittany Stafford, Harrison Hampshire and Meg Schultz Absent: Paige Clayton and Candice Down

MEG TAKES HOME FIRST PLACECongratulations to Year 7 student Meg Schultz, who took home first place in her age group at the Glenelg Division Cross Country. It was a very competitive field so the results our students achieved were fantastic.

Candice Down competed in the 16 Years age group coming through in 16th place. Brittany Stafford competed in the 17 Years age group coming through in around 18th place. Aidan Cancian competed in the 17 Years age group and was unsure of his place. He was middle of the pack so in the top 30.

INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS The Glenelg Division Athletics were held at Casterton on Friday 22nd March. Bayview had 69 competitors for the day which is an amazing effort for a small school. Unfortunately due to injury or school commitments the team was condensed to 59 competitors. All students were great ambassadors for the school behaving and performing admirably. It was a pleasure to be part of the Bayview Team. Some highlights of the day included Rachael Bennett being awarded the 20 Year old female champion, Jeremy Boyer breaking

the 20 Year old Male long jump record and 7 students winning their respective events.Congratulations to the following students:Meg Schultz – 800 M, 400 M and 1500 MLaura Kelly – HurdlesLiam Nelson – High JumpRachael Bennett – High JumpJeremy Boyer – High Jump, Triple Jump, Long JumpTaylor Kelsey-Shueard – JavelinLuke Johnson - Javelin.Well done also to all the students who placed in an event. IRB AUSTRALIAN TITLES; DARWIN JULY ELLA EADE, JESSE & JAKE STONE & KEEGAN BILSONAt the beginning of the competition no one knew where Portland was, we were one of few Victorian clubs that competed. Both our male & female teams competed in all events; this included the straight rescue, mass rescue, teams rescue, tube rescue and the lifesaver relay. Portland did really well making it into semi finals for most events with the girls’ team going through to the finals in nearly all of them. It was quite different competing in a hot climate, for us this is a winter sport where hypothermia is usually our biggest worry. It was an awesome time away and we would like to thank the Portland Surf Life Saving Club and we encourage people to come and see what we do.
