PUBLIC HEARING ON “VACATING” MAMIE

STREET DELAYED The Public Hearing that was re-scheduled for Tuesday, December 10, has now been postponed to Tuesday, January 14, 2014, by request of counsel for the Ted Smallwood’s Store since settlement agreements among the parties located on that portion of Mamie Street are still being negotiated. According to the Collier County Attorney’s office, “It is our full intention to allow the public to weigh in on the discussion as is required by statute when the parties wish for this to come forward; it was decided not to bring it forward until all of the parties to that settlement are ready.”

TREE LIGHTING Join the kiddies at 5:30 p.m. in front of City Hall to decorate the tree before the Mayor switches on the lights.

LIGHT PARADE The annual Booster Club Light Parade will begin at 7:00 p.m. so get your floats ready and meet at 6:30 p.m. behind WinCar. To enter, phone Carol Foss at 695-2277 or pick up a form at Island Café. There will also be a 5k glow walk / run at 7:30 p.m. following the parade.

CITY COUNCIL REPORT by Marya Repko

Mayor Sammy Hamilton opened the meeting by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. He said that "although we had a good year, next year we'll do even better." Recently-elected councilors Howie Grimm, Elaine Middelstaedt, and Johnnie Potter took the oath of office. Lt. Mark Milligan with the Collier County Sheriff's Office said that the 2013 hurricane season is over with no incidents, and he wished everyone a safe and happy holiday season. He also encouraged us to always phone the CCSO if we see anything suspicious. The next meeting is on Tuesday, January 7, 2014.

Ghost Rider Tram Tours The first Ghost Rider Tram Tour of the season is Tuesday, December 10, and every Tuesday thereafter, plus the first Saturday in the month. This is a great way to see the Fakahatchee without getting your feet wet. Tours last 2½ hours and the tram can accommodate wheelchairs. Make reservations at www.orchidswamp.org.

Collier-Seminole Talk 1974 was a turning point in Everglades history. Both the Fakahatchee and Big Cypress were saved from development. However, the fight to restore traditional water flow to the Everglades continues. Local author Marya Repko will give a free illustrated presentation about the Everglades and the efforts to restore what remains of this unique ecology on Wednesday, December 11, at 2:00 p.m. at Collier Seminole State Park.

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Students and Staff, We are quickly approaching the Holiday season and we want to wish you and your families the very best. We are hopeful you will find time to relax and enjoy your families. We are very excited about some things that are happening in our school. Students and parents are taking advantage of our after school program as we have over 75% of our elementary students currently enrolled. Extending the student day for 1 hour computes to about 3 full weeks of school for the students. This will have positive results in student academic gains and will get us closer to obtaining the state grade that we know we can earn. Our dual enrollment students are about to complete their first semester of college. What a fantastic opportunity for them to be able to be in high school and earn college credits at no cost to them. We are proud of the effort and time these students are putting in to this. Basketball has started and we are thrilled to be able to compete in the State Play-off tournament this year. We wish our boys’ and girls’ programs the very best. I know they have been working hard and will compete well in our new district. Interview with Karisa by Patricia Huff

Karisa Brown is well-known in this area since her family has lived in Chokoloskee for generations, but many do not realize that Karisa has been accepted into several medical schools (Nova in Ft. Lauderdale and Campbell in North Carolina) and is interviewing at FSU in Tallahassee. She will be starting her journey to become a physician next year. Karisa graduated from Everglades City School in 2009 and was the Class Salutatorian. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences (with a minor in Business) at Florida International University in Miami, graduating with cum laude honors. She volunteered in Dr. Barnard’s Little Kids Clinic here in Everglades City, in Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Room and at the Miami Children’s Hospital as a “bedside buddy.” This is where Karisa found her true vocation; she loves working with the children. Her ultimate plans, when she finishes, is to complete three years of pediatric residency and two years in a pediatric cardiology fellowship program. These are admirable goals for any young girl, and from talking to Karisa, I know she will finish anything she starts. The most impressive attribute that I found in Karisa is her desire to be an example, and a mentor, to students graduating from Everglades City School. Everyone has the potential to pursue any career they wish, and Karisa is an inspiration to all young members of our community.

Recipe for Good Eating SIMPLE HOT FRUIT CASSEROLE

by Patricia Huff This is a recipe from my past. When I was 19 and graduated from a junior college in Virginia, I returned home to Nashville and started working as a medical secretary in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt. Our Division of Endocrinology had a diverse group of employees: teaching professors, residents, interns, medical students and laboratory technicians as well as a full-time research staff. We were always having luncheons for one reason or another with everyone bringing their own special dish. One recipe I remember was made by one of our older technicians (at least I thought she was older since I was still a teenager). Her name was Lula and this is her recipe. Easy to make and delicious during the holidays.

Ingredients: Fresh Fruit (or medium size canned fruit if you want): Pineapple slices, apple rings, peach halves, pear halves, apricot halves (peeled) 2 TBS Flour ½ cup Brown Sugar 1 Stick of Butter 1 Cup Sherry Optional: ¼ tsp cloves, ginger, cinnamon

Combine flour, sugar, butter and sherry and cook over medium heat until sugar melts and ingredients are blended. Layer fruit in a two-quart casserole and pour sauce on top. Refrigerate at least one day. Remove from refrigerator and cook for 20-25 minutes in 350° before serving (preferably on a cold winter day).

Don't Forget to Drink Your Water

A plain glass of water... I agree it is not the most exciting thing to drink, but it is the best thing for you. If water is not your

drink of choice, or you drink a lot of water but want to jazz it up a bit, here a few ideas to make your plain glass of water your new go to drink.

Add Fruit: restaurants will often serve your complimentary glass of water with a slice of lemon, but don't stop there. Take a pitcher you can keep in the refrigerator and fill it with water. Then add slices of lemons, oranges, limes, or grapefruit. You could even add them all together and it looks really beautiful. The citrus will marinate in the water and give you a refreshing flavor. Adding berries to your water is also a delicious way to brighten up your water. Raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries are my favorite.

Add herbs: nothing goes better with those lemons and limes than a big handful or two of mint. Just add the mint to the container with your sliced citrus fruit and and water for an even greater flavor. Basil is also a wonderful herb to add to water and pairs well with cucumber. Again, just add slices of cucumber, (usually 1 whole cucumber will do) and a handful of basil to a pitcher of fresh water and let sit for a few minutes to let the flavors come together. Don't forget to add the mint or basil to your berry infused water too!! I serve these infused waters to my clients at my Spa and they always love them. I keep them on hand at home as well and even my kids will drink them. They are great chilled, over ice, or even at room temperature. You may never drink plain water again! Enjoy.

BACKCOUNTRY ACCESS PLAN The National Park Service plans to prepare an environmental impact statement in association with the preparation of a backcountry access plan for Big Cypress National Preserve. The comment period is open for 45 days from November 19, 2013, through January 2, 2014. The purpose of the plan will be to provide off-road vehicle secondary trails, non-motorized trails, and a camping management approach that protects the Preserve’s natural and cultural resources while providing for public enjoyment. It will also establish a permanent route for the Florida National Scenic Trail and other hiking opportunities. FWC News Everglades restoration a high priority for FWC

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), at its meeting November 20 in Weston, presented a position paper designed to help guide Everglades restoration. The position paper provides guidance on how to resolve habitat and wildlife issues as the FWC and partners work together on Everglades-restoration efforts. This document is an important tool for managing the habitats and species in this complex ecosystem. To learn more about the FWC’s major wildlife management area in this ecosystem, the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor WMA, visit MyFWC.com/Viewing and select “Wildlife Management Areas” then “Explore by Name.” The second phase of waterfowl and coot season comes in statewide December 7 and runs through January 26. In addition to the usual hunting license and permit requirements, duck hunters also must have a Florida waterfowl permit ($5) and a federal duck stamp ($15). The daily bag limit on ducks is six, but you need to know your ducks before you pull the trigger, because there are different daily limits for each species. Without question, the most unique of all the destinations found in The Living Gulf Coast is the Koreshan State Historic Site. In fact, it is considered so strange that it is featured in the classic book Weird Florida as a place you have to see to believe. Founded by a charismatic leader named Dr. Cyrus R. Teed in 1894, this cult-like community was carved out of the south Florida wilderness by more than 200 dedicated followers of a new religion called Koreshanity. Teed was born in Trout Creek, New York, in 1839, and as a young physician became interested in unconventional beliefs such as alchemy and the newfound science of high-voltage electricity. During an experiment in 1869 Teed was badly shocked. When he came to, he stated that he was visited by a divine spirit during his unconsciousness, and that the spirit had told him he was the new messiah. Teed then vowed to apply his scientific knowledge toward redeeming humanity and changed his name to Koresh, the Hebrew word for Cyrus. After his electrified rebirth as Koresh, Teed’s ideas became increasingly odd. Many now believe the shock he received may have damaged his brain. He began preaching about a unique view of the earth called cellular cosmogony, wherein the earth was located inside a giant sphere, the sun was a battery-operated contraption, and the stars were refractions of its light. As if that weren’t enough, he also advocated reincarnation, immortality, celibacy, communism, and a host of other alternative ideas. When his radical concepts got him chased out of the state of New York, then Chicago, he and his group of followers uprooted and moved to Estero to create his “New Jerusalem.” While many of his concepts and beliefs can be dismissed as bizarre, some of his ideas were nothing short of brilliant. During the golden age of the Koreshan community, Teed and his followers had a bakery, printing house, general store, concrete works, and a power plant that supplied electricity to the region decades before it was available anywhere else in Southwest Florida. He steadfastly believed in the equality of women during a time when they did not even have the right to vote in America. He imported scores of exotic trees and vegetation, hoping to find good uses for them in his new utopia. Thomas Edison visited Teed several times in the early 1900s because of their mutual interest in exotic plants and electricity. His eccentric ideas often got Teed into trouble with the locals. It was just such a dispute that tragically led to his death in 1908 at the age of 69, two years after he was severely pistol whipped by a Ft. Myers town marshal. Convinced that Koresh was going to rise from the dead, his followers put his body in a bathtub and began an around-the-clock vigil, but after several days, local health officials stepped in and forced the burial of his remains. The Koreshan Unity faith Teed founded continued for decades, but by 1961, when the Koreshan property was deeded over to the state of Florida, only four followers of Koreshanity remained alive. Today the Koreshan State Historic Site is one of the most fascinating 100 acres in Florida. The structures left standing include the generating plant, lecture hall, general store, and workshops, and there are displays showcasing some of this lost religion’s beliefs. A video about the history of Koreshanity plays continuously in the Founder’s Residence building. Of particular note is the massive monkey-puzzle tree growing near the Estero River in the sunken gardens section of the park. Originating from southern Chile, this towering tree can grow to more than 130 feet and produces ponderous, edible seed cones that can weigh up to five pounds.

This week The Mullet Rapper is celebrating its 200th issue! Many people ask why I started publishing our local newspaper. My background professions included an administrator at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a financial advisor for Raymond James & Associates in Marathon, Florida. When I retired and moved to Everglades City, I saw the need to provide more information to the local community about events and activities. On February 1, 2001, I published the first one-page “What’s Happening around Town” newsletter. In addition to a calendar, I highlighted a new business: JT’s in Chokoloskee which had just re-opened by Norm and Avery. By April 2001 the paper was a two-page front-and-back paper and highlighted the Everglades City Trolley Tours (remember that!). By November 2002 the monthly paper had grown in size to five pages and included ads for the first time (still a Free Copy). In January 2007, the “official” 1st Issue (and still monthly publication) included contributors Captain Bill Lindsay, Avery Sumner, Adela Padron-Butler and Savannah Oglesby (only 9 years old!). The Mullet Rapper title was added on April 6, 2007, when the Free Copy was changed to 25¢ and Marya Repko joined the staff as co-editor and designed the new layout (THANKS!).

So, 200 issues later we continue at 25¢ and publish bi-monthly. We wish to thank the community and our advertisers for all your support throughout the years!

Florida Tales “Airfields of Days Gone By”

by Chester Keene Driving by the old abandoned and once very active Flying Schools of Carlstrom and Dorr Fields of DeSoto County, FL, are still visible remains of their great service they once gave. This is where the Cadets honed their basic flying skills; later they will move on to advanced trainers for service to their countries. First, in the early part of WWII, we were not yet at war and British cadets were sent here to train to fly. England was at war and the Brits wanted to get a crack at "Jerry," the slang name for Germans. They were sent here by the hundreds to train. Carlstrom Field was famous for a few things beside citrus and cattle. The open prairies were ideal places for pilot training airfields, the weather was great compared to England's bad weather most of the time, and being bombed by German aircraft. One of the persons sent here to train cadets in WWII was Col. Horace Hickam, holder of the Silver Star. He was sent to Carlstrom Field as a Major to train as an instructor in aerial gunnery. When finished with that phase, he was promoted to Colonel to assume full command of the two airfields. His name was honored and used to name the airfield at Hawaii, which was later attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. Col James Doolittle was also here as an observer for the first "Cruise Missile". When WWII was declared, the British Cadets

were sent to Riddle Field in Clewiston, FL. There is a plot of ground that honors the British Cadets that lost their life while training in SW FL.

From Savannah’s Eyes The crowd screaming, with their hands up in the air. Cheerleaders yelling, jumping, and chanting on the sidelines. Boys dripping sweat as shoes squeaked from one end of the court to the other, passing the ball back and forth before making the winning shot. Referees blowing their

whistles for foul balls or out of bounds. The coaches shouting names and plays while pointing in different directions. This is what occurs at our boys’ basketball games this year. The past two games they've won, heading into districts with 2-0 wins! The Cheerleaders were chanting to the top of our lungs, as glitter covered the floor and pom-poms shook round and round. The boys stealing the ball repetitively from the opposing team and making shot after shot. As the clock runs down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and the buzzer goes off, the crowd jumps up and the cheerleaders race to the basketball court chanting "We are proud of you, say we are proud of you!" The boys just smile, try to catch their breath, and take in all the applause as they exchange hugs with each other. The other team walking away in disappointment, trying to come up with a strategy to beat us next time. This past home game was against Seacrest in which the boys dominated against. The girls’ basketball team didn't win against the girls team but they will definitely get them next time! An earlier boys’ game before was against Ahfachkee at their school and we also won in a great game! The next home game for the boys’ varsity will be December 10 so mark your calendars and come support our boys’ basketball team! Can't wait to cheer for the boys winning streak some more! On Sunday, November 24, between 12:15 and 12:55 p.m. a vehicle was reported burglarized while parked at 892 Dupont St. Forced entry was gained and property was taken. A resident on Rewis Dr in Chokoloskee reported theft of a 9.9 HP Johnson outboard motor and 5 gallon gas can removed from their boat stored on a trailer at their property. Should you have any information concerning these incidents, please contact the Collier County Sheriff’s Office at 252-9300. Help us by remembering to always secure your vehicles and in addition items of value should not be left in plain view. CCSO also offers free boat security surveys to boat owners at your location. After the survey is completed the boat owner is provided with crime prevention tips regarding their particular boat. If you are interested, call Deputy Sue Gentry at 252-0708.

NEW BREEDER REGULATIONS As of November 1, 2013, anyone selling puppies or kittens in Collier County must be registered with Collier County Domestic Animal Services (DAS) as a breeder.
