Respect Life Sunday by Fr. Michael Kerschen

October is Respect Life Month, calling our attention to the dignity of every human life. This year, our reflection comes through St. Joseph’s eyes, who defended Jesus’ life with the courage and strength of a father.

“Do not be afraid.” This is what the angel told Joseph in a dream upon learning that his wife, Mary, was pregnant. Joseph rose and took Mary into his home. He cared for her and for her unborn child whom Joseph would name Jesus. (Mt 1:18-25)

“There was no room for them in the inn.” During the couple’s trip to Bethlehem for enrollment, it came time for Mary to give birth to her child. No doubt distraught that they were away from home for this important moment, Joseph nonetheless searched tirelessly for a place to shelter and rest his family, making the best of a difficult situation. (Lk 2:1-7)

“Out of Egypt I called my son.” Hosea’s prophecy was fulfilled when Joseph took his family as refugees into Egypt to escape Herod’s tyrannical pursuit of Jesus’ life. They stayed there, in a foreign place among unfamiliar people, until it was safe to return to the Promised Land. (Mt 2:13-15)

“Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man.” In the hidden life of Nazareth, Jesus was nourished by the love of his family. Joseph taught him many things, including how to work with his hands and how to pray. In Nazareth, under the provident fatherhood of Joseph, was formed a life that would soon be offered for the salvation of the world. (Lk 2:52)

God Himself trusted Joseph, placing His own divine and vulnerable life under his fatherly care.

St. Joseph, defender of life, pray for us!

Marriage - A Path to Holiness by Carey Boyzuck

This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh –Genesis 2:23

This one goes out to all the married couples out there. I’ll start with this: your marriage is important. Really important. Important enough for Jesus to make clear boundaries about it. Marriage between a man and a woman reflects the covenantal relationship between Christ and His Church. The exclusive, faithful love between a man and woman is a sign to the world of the love that God has for His Church.

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus sets a clear command about the sanctity of marriage: it is indissoluble. Marriage is a vocation, and therefore a path to holiness. True love requires sacrifice; we give up what we want for the good of the other, and hopefully our spouses do the same for us. Working on our marriages is not easy, but it is deeply important. After all, in the sacrament of marriage we become one flesh with our spouse.I must try to remember daily that my husband is a part of me and I am a part of him.

Sometimes we bicker or have trouble communicating. We each have our selfish tendencies and baggage. But by apologizing and forgiving, we become more like God. In our efforts to communicate well in the different seasons of our life, we show the other that we are willing to go the extra mile for our marriage. When we put aside our selfishness and sacrifice for each other, we demonstrate true love.

In His mercy, God does not leave married couples alone in their struggles. This is from the Catechism: “By coming to restore the original order of creation disturbed by sin, he himself [Christ] gives the strength and grace to live marriage in the new dimensionof the Reign of God. It is by following Christ, renouncing themselves, and taking up their crosses that spouses will be able to ‘receive’ the original meaning of marriage and live it with the help of Christ. This grace of Christian marriage is a fruit of Christ's cross, the source of all Christian life” (CCC 1615).

1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive signal graces.2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the heart of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life.7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.

Mary’s 15 Promises of the Rosary by Kendra Engels

One way to handle the many stresses of this world is through prayer, specifically by praying the Rosary. The Rosary is a meditation that helps us be more mindful, allowing us to focus and reflect on what the words of each prayer means while calming our mind. By praying to Mary through the Rosary and asking for her intercession with Jesus we also receive many wonderful blessings, including Mary’s fifteen promises to the faithful who recite the Rosary.
