I.FASTINGANDABSTINENCE.InordertofosteraspiritofrepentanceanduniteourselvesmorecloselytoChrist,ChurchlawrequirestheobservanceofAbstinenceandFasting(CIC-CodeofCanonLaw,1249-1253).1.Abstinence:Allpersons,14yearsandolder,areobligedtoabstainfrommeatonAshWednesdayandallFridaysofLent.2.Fasting:Everyonefromages18to59isobligedtofastonAshWednesdayandGoodFriday.VoluntaryfastingonotherweekdaysofLent,especiallyonWednesdaysandFridays,ishighlyrecommended.Fastingisgenerallyunderstoodtomeanthatonefullmealmaybeeaten.Twoothersmallmealsmaybeeaten,buttogethertheyshouldnotequalafullmeal.Eatingbetweenmealsisnotpermitted,butliquidsareallowed.Itisdesirablethattheyperformsomeotherpiousactinstead.Otherformsoffasting,includingabstinencefromalcoholicbeverages,television,videogames,theinternetandsocialmedia,isspirituallybene icialandstronglyencouraged.II.PRAYER.CatholicsareurgedtoreadandpraywithsacredScripturemoreintentlyduringLent,andtostrengthentheirknowledgeofthefaithbyreadingtheCatechismoftheCatholicChurch.Thefaithfulareencouragedtoparticipateinspecialdevotionsofferedbytheparish,especiallyparishpenanceservicesandEucharisticadoration.OtherdevotionssuchastheRosary,theDivineMercyChaplet,visitstotheBlessedSacrament,andprayingforvocationstothepriesthoodandreligiouslifearestronglyencouraged.1.SacramentReconciliation:LentisaprivilegedtimeforcelebratingtheSacramentofReconciliation.Thefaithfulshouldberemindedthattheyareobligedtoconfesstheirsinsatleastonceayear(CIC989).2.LentenMassSchedule:ThefaithfulareurgedtoattendMassonweekdaysasoftenaspossible,especiallyduringLent.3.TheStationsoftheCrossaretobecelebratedineachparishonFridaysduringLentandparishionersshouldbeencouragedtoparticipate.

8.TheEasterVigil(March31)shouldnotbeginuntilafternightfall(RomanMissal)oraboutthirtyminutesaftersunset,whichis7:29 p.m. thisyear.TheEasterVigil,therefore,maybeginanytimeafter8:00p.m.
