This month, our workshop coordinator had 124 participants in workshops and job clubs between both locations. The Lexington
Career Center hosted 27 attendees and the Thomasville Career Center hosted 97 attendees.
The Career Services unit supported the December Veteran’s Coffee by attending and providing resources for job seeking
veterans.
During December, Career Development Consultants continued to partner with DCCC and speak about NCWorks services to
various classes. This is a good way to spread the word to people interested in career training.
Two staff, one from DavidsonWorks and one from Division of Workforce Solutions, traveled to Raleigh in December to make
a presentation and officially complete the training to earn their Global Career Development Facilitator credential. This process
takes several months of independent work completing online modules and individual projects. We are proud of their accom-
plishments!
The Thomasville Career Center had three recruiting events with a total of 24 customers interviewing.
Partners & Services:
Urban League: The Urban League continues searching for sites to place seniors in paid work experiences. While the Urban
League is not enrolling new candidates, they continue recruiting new participants.

The Value of Labor Market Information
DavidsonWorks and the Lexington Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored a Business Before Hours event in December. The main topics of discussion were DavidsonWorks’ ser-vices and the NCWorks Career Center system. Several chamber members attended with each reporting they learned something they did not know prior to the event. The last veterans coffee event of 2016 was held at Richard Childress Racing in Welcome on Pearl Harbor Day
December 7th.
There were 675 attendees, 500 of those were veterans, which made this the largest gath-
ering of its kind in North Carolina. The staff at RCR helped shuttle veterans and family
members from the parking areas to the racing complex of Mr. Childress’s beautiful audito-
rium facility. Breakfast was provided by Thelma’s of Salisbury, Stephanie Owens, Krispy
Kreme, and Sheetz. Erinn Diaz from “Letters from Home” entertained the veterans with
songs of the past.
History author James M. Scott presented his book “Target Tokyo
Jimmy Doolittle And The Raid That Avenged Pearl Harbor”. We had
the opportunity to see WWII photos, some of which had never been
seen in the United States before Mr. Scott’s publication.
If you are a veteran, and have never
attended a Davidson County veter-
ans coffee at the Richard Childress
Racing Complex in Welcome, put it on
your calendar. They are held the first
Wednesday every month from 8:30 to
10:30 AM. We thank Mr. Childress and his dedicated staff for their unwavering support to our veterans and our
community.
We presented 9 HUGE bags of toys and gifts to the Salvation Army - THANK YOU! For our Vets Coffee next
December (2017), we will donate toys you bring to our year end event to the Marines’ Toys for Tots program. So
with 12 months notice, we should be able to fill the room!
Special Veterans Coffee: Join the NC Veterans Coffee in the Triangle at UNC-TV studios on Saturday, January

Success Story
Jackson (not his real name) first visited the Thomasville NCWorks Career Center in
the Spring of 2016. A vibrant young man, he had moved back and forth from city to
city in North Carolina, but wanted to secure employment in Thomasville where he
hoped to permanently reside. He previously worked for Mighty Dollar, as a Stocker;
he stocked merchandise according to requirements, meeting customer specifica-
tions, excellent customer service, cleaned and maintained departments / work areas.
Although he only worked there for a couple of months, that didn’t keep him from
holding his head up high and striving for more.
He was consistently job searching and completing applications. He did not have his
own transportation, therefore, he would use Davidson County Transportation to get
back and forth from home to the Career Center. After several months, he received a
call from the ECU Dental School of Medicine in Lexington, concerning a position for
which he had applied. He was offered a Janitor’s position and he accepted.
Although he was working, it was only part-time, therefore, he continued to work and
come into the Career Center to job search. The staff noticed how consistent he was
and how determined he was to get his driver’s license and a vehicle in order to be
more independent. Staff suggested that Jackson attend the Job Club Express ses-
sion, which would benefit him by improving job searching skills, mock interviews, and
resume building. Once he completed the Job Club Express, he was perfect for a
work experience to build upon his customer service skills, and with learning how to
communicate with customers to satisfy their needs and wants.
Since Jackson had transportation issues, he was placed in a work experience at the
Career Center. Working with Center staff daily and helping customers was a valua-
ble experience for him. He was very appreciative for all the help he was given from
staff, the use of Career Scope, job workshop, and mock interviews to help build his
confidence.
Avante (Libertywood Nursing Home) had come to the Thomasville NCWorks Center
recruiting for Janitors, CNA and cooks. This particular day, Jackson had also come
in the office. Staff mentioned to the recruiter that Jackson would be ideal based on
his experience as a Janitor and the work experience he put in with NCWorks. We
connected the two, and as they say, the rest is history.
Jackson was able to get his license, a car, and still has two jobs working as a Janitor
at ECU Dental School and Avante!!! He still comes in to the office, but just to see
how everybody is doing!!
Coming together is a beginning; Keeping together is progress; Working together is
success
