Dear Parents, Children and Friends

Happy, calm children learn best

All parents want the best for their children. We want happy, healthy and successful children who grow up managing their lives meaningfully in this busy and chaotic world. One of the best ways to do this is to create calm lives for our children. Stress is one of the biggest fac-tors for physical and mental issues.

Canadian psychology and philosophy professor, Dr Stuart Shanker, writes about the key factor of children’s learning capacity being their ability to self-regulate their emotions and behaviour. He says that being treated with kindness and fairness will give children the best opportunity to learn this vital skill.

Dr Shanker also writes about the importance of children’s energy levels in them being able to cope with day to day experiences and challenges. Experiences that sap their energy include over-scheduled lives, overstimulation, poor sleep patterns, too much TV/screen time, low quality food, lack of predictable routines and boundaries, abuse, shouting, shaming and unre-alistic expectations.

Children need to be in a relaxed, calm and focussed mind space in order to play and learn. If a child is struggling with anxiety, stress or feeling disconnected, they have less energy to learn, think and be happy.

So, what helps build self-regulation?

Music

Drama

Art

Nature

Sport

Positive and safe affection

Deep loving relationships

What doesn’t build self-regulation?

Too much TV or screen time

Not enough human connection

Stress and threat

Calmness is a skill that can be learned early in life. Parents are great teachers and role mod-els in creating calmness and stillness in daily life.

Class Placements 2018

During the next few weeks 2018 classroom lists will be compiled. Placement for students re-sult from a range of information gathered from the current year by classroom and support teachers together with an awareness of students’ learning styles, academic achievement, so-cial/emotional development, peer interactions and gender. This incorporates knowledge of peer support structures for individuals within year groups.

It is the responsibility of the school to place ALL students into class groupings which accommodate individual and collective needs according to the information gained as outlined above. Whilst parent requests are con-sidered they cannot necessarily be accommodated due to professional judgement by classroom teachers and other school personnel e.g Principal, Assistant Principal, School Chaplain.

Please direct any questions or queries regarding class lists in writing to Mrs Swann (not classroom teachers) prior to Friday 10 November.

2018 class lists will be announced on Wednesday 6 December when students meet together as a class for the first time during whole school transition. Class lists will also be displayed on classroom doors on this day at home time. There will be no alteration or change to publicized class lists.

Save the Date: Annual Community Meeting

Our Annual Community Meeting takes place from 6.30pm on Thursday 29 November in the school library. At this meeting our P&F and School Board will present their reports and staffing for 2018 will be an-nounced. Please mark this date in your diary.

Attached to this newsletter are the P&F and School Board nomination forms. I would ask that you seriously consider offering yourself for nomination on either of these associations. It is a wonderful way in which par-ents can actively contribute to the school as both focus on providing the very best for our students.

May God bless our school and those within it.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED!

100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima

Last Friday was the 100 year anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima where the Miracle of the Sun

happened.

This story is about three shepherd children who lived near the town of Fatima, in Portugal. Francisco (aged 9)

and Jacinta Marto (aged 7) were brother and sister and Lucia (aged 10) was their cousin. It was their job to

go to the nearby hills to look after the sheep for the family.

One day, in 1916, when the children were looking after their sheep an angel appeared to them. The angel ap-

peared to them three times. The angel taught the children some prayers and prepared them to meet Our Lady.

In 1917, Our Lady appeared to the children six times. This took place between May and October, on the thir-

teenth day of each month. At first, no one believed them and at one stage they were put in jail, however, the

children always spoke the truth.

Our Lady gave the children an important message to tell everyone in their village.

Lucia asked Our Lady to perform a miracle that everyone could see, so that they would be believed. On 13th

October 1917, there was a ‘miracle of the sun’ witnessed by 70,000 people. Those who were there described

the miracle as ‘The day the sun danced’.

Do You Have a Question?

Have you ever noticed how many symbols are in the Church? Do you have a question about our Faith? Have

you ever wondered why we do the things that we do in Church.

Why do we bless ourselves with Holy Water when we enter?

Why do we have bells ringing at certain times during the Mass?

Why does the Priest always kiss the altar at the start of every Mass?

Why is there always a red light burning next to the Tabernacle?

Why do we sit, stand and kneel at different times?

See Mr Maher or send your questions to the front office at [email protected] and your questions will

be answered in the next ‘Faith Focus’. This will continue throughout the term, so keep your questions coming.

Bunnings Sausage Sizzle. The P&F Bunnings Sausage Siz-zle for 2017 will be held on Sat-urday 21 October. Please come along and buy a sausage sizzle and a drink to help raise funds for the school. Volunteer forms were sent home in the Newsletter last week (see be-low).

The response for help has been very minimal. Please remember that all of the efforts we make in fundrais-ing are for the benefit of the children and that many hands make lighter work for everyone.

PARISH NEWS THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS!! - Fr. Tim, Fr Tom and all Sacred Heart parishioners wish to sincerely thank Janet de Brito BLS LLB JD, for her 10 years of service in our office. Janet has been a formidable force in our parish, al-ways going above and beyond in her duties as parish secretary. Whilst she hasn’t gone far, working at the Gosnells Legal Centre, Janet has com-pleted her studies and no longer works in the parish office. On Friday 6 October Janet was sworn in at the Admission of Lawyers ceremony, at the Supreme Court of WA and is now a practicing Lawyer. We wish her the best of luck in all her future endeavours. We also welcome Marcia de Brito who has taken over the role as the new parish secretary. NEW ALTAR SERVERS—There will be new Altar Server training on Saturday 21 October after the 8.45am Mass for children who have made their First Holy Communion and would like to become Altar Servers. Those wishing to attend,

please place your name on the form on the table in the Church foyer or school children are asked to return

Glow Sticks with Lanyard $2.00 Glow Necklace $2.00

‘Just a little more time, please, please!’ Does this sound familiar? Research states that up to 40% of

school children are not getting the required amount of sleep. This may mean that’s almost half of the stu-dents at Sacred Heart are not getting a good night’s sleep. The required recommendations are Pre-schoolers (11-14 hours), 6-13 years (9-11 hours). Research also suggests that our bodies and minds like regular routines. This may not seem exciting, however children need routine so their body and brain can grow and develop.

Better Bedtime Routines - Rituals - Part One

Let your child know who is ‘The Parent’ and who is ‘The Child’. There are times when the child may think they are the grown-ups, which causes even more problems. When your child complains say ‘I’m the mum /dad - it’s my job so you can grow up happy and healthy” At times tough love maintains the boundaries of the child-parent relationship.

Make sure that both mum and dad are in agreement to bed time and routine. Children will use this to play one against the other if you cannot agree. Please read if this is an issue in your family. http://www.essentialbaby.com.au/baby/baby-sleep/disagreement-over-childrens-bedtime-is-bad-for-your-relationship-20170811-gxucml

Choose a regular time to go to bed and wake up that is beneficial to the amount of sleep your child needs to rebalance their activities and develop a healthy body and mind. If needed, set an alarm an hour before bed time to remind you and your child to wind down and get ready for bed. This way both of you can prepare to calm down.

Let your child sleep in their own bed. If they sleep with you, it is setting up confusing unhealthy roles now and for the future. A child needs their own bed. Watch this short video “The Free Pass - Getting your child to sleep in their own room” and let me know if this works for you.

If you are having problems with your child’s sleep routine Relationship Australia may be able to help as they run specific courses www.relationshipaustralia.com.au. I am also available to assist and support. Please contact me if you need any more information. I am at school this week Wednesday and Thursday 8am - 4pm. SUSTAINABILITY NEWS

TERRACYCLE

We have two blue TerraCycle bins outside the library to recycle oral care products and empty beauty care products.

Oral care products include old toothbrushes, floss containers, empty toothpaste tubes and caps, empty packaging from toothpaste and toothbrushes.

We have one month left to get in as much ORAL CARE recycling as possible, to go into the draw to win a park bench for our

school!

Beauty care packaging includes cosmetics packaging, hair care packaging, skin care packaging and shaving foam packaging.

Together with Garnier, TerraCycle is giving away a playground to the primary school that collects the most used beauty products between 9 October and 8 December, 2017 (TERM 4). The playground is valued at $45 000 and made from recycled beauty products!

Collect and send in as

many used beauty prod-

ucts as possible through-

out the contest period to

give Sacred Heart the

chance to win!

COMPOST, GLORIOUS COMPOST!

On the school holidays, Mr Burke and Mrs Connolly

helped me empty and turn all 9 of our compost bins! What a job! There is now a huge pile of beautiful rich compost waiting for Mr Vince to use.

We were amazed to find plastic wrappers, icy pole wrappers, squeezy yogurt packaging and even the stickers from fruit buried in amongst the compost that looked as good as new. It was amazing to see that fruit and veggie scraps decompose but plastic packaging is untouched, even after a couple of years in a compost bin! Mrs Bathols
