Dear Parents, Children and Friends,

Welcome back to term three. I trust all of our families had a relaxing break together. Teach-ers were thrilled to see the enthusiasm with which the children returned to school yesterday. We look forward to another productive term together. The beginning of semester two is an ideal time to ensure there is a revised focus on individ-ual learning goals following the information provided to students and parents in the semes-ter one reports and at parent teacher meetings held before the holidays.

Our school focus for this term is:

The Sacred Heart Parent Handbook gives examples of how members of our community: stu-dents, parents and staff can ensure we are all accepting of and demonstrating responsibility in our thoughts, actions and deeds on a daily basis. For students, responsibility is shown through:

Being aware of how our actions and words impact on and affect others

Showing initiative

Following rules and accepting consequences when a rule is broken

Using good judgement when making choices, especially when they affect others

Completing chores and tasks including homework, keeping our room tidy, cleaning the table after meal times and helping parents with simple tasks around the house

Developing age appropriate independence – carrying our own school bag, helping with or packing our own lunch, taking care of our own belongings at home and school

As parents and staff, our demonstration of responsibility for children in the school setting can be shown through an understanding that at all times and in all situations we are chil-dren’s learning models. What we say and do, how we accept and work through process and the words we use when talking about institutions such as schools, the church, law enforcing bodies and the people who work and interact in them is the individual responsibility of each person.

This term children in our parish will be receiving the following sacraments:

Your children are prepared for these sacraments by the parish sacramental team and school staff who work closely together. I ask you to pray especially for these young people as they live their faith journey.

Lifelink

ARCHBISHOP TIMOTHY COSTELLOE extends grateful thanks to the community of Sacred Heart for our recent donation which was given as a result of fundraising from Sacred Heart Day celebrations. Lifelink agencies demonstrate Catholic faith in action, showing love and compassion to those who are less fortu-nate and we are proud to support them. NAIDOC Day Celebrations

This Friday the school will join together to celebrate NAIDOC Day. NAIDOC Week is usually held in the first full week of the July school holidays. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an oppor-tunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. This year the students will be involved in a number of activities including sto-rytelling, face painting, Dreamtime art and traditional dancing. We would love to invite our parents to join us during the day. The day begins with a Welcome to Country and whole school assembly at 8.40am. As the children leave the hall from assembly, they will experience the traditional Smoking Ceremony.

Before lunch, children will have the opportunity to sample kangaroo sausages, wattle seed cake, apricot and quondong jam and bush tomato chutney. They are asked to bring their usual lunch for after the tasting. We ask ALL students to wear their blue sports uniform for the day.

Prayer of Aboriginal People (For the Pope's visit to Australia in 1986, Aboriginal people composed the following prayer for the ceremony in Alice Springs. This prayer now is prayed by many Catholic Aboriginal groups around the country.)

Father of all, you gave us the Dreaming. You have spoken to us through our beliefs.

You then made your love clear to us in the person of Jesus. We thank you for your care. You own us. You are our hope.

Make us strong as we face the problems of change. We ask you to help the people of Australia to listen to us and respect our culture.

Make the knowledge of you grow strong in all people, so that you can be at home in us and we can make a home for everyone in our land.

Amen.

Staffing Changes This week we welcome Lauren De Souza to our staff. Miss De Souza will be teaching Year One this semes-ter whilst Mrs Cannell is on long service leave. We also welcome back Miss Lauren Shaw to our school. Miss Shaw has returned to us after a six month break overseas and will resume the role of Physical Educa-tion Teacher and DOTT Relief Teacher in Kindergarten. I know you will join me in warmly welcoming them to our community. Duty of Care – Before and After School Please be aware that the school’s responsibility in caring for your children begins at 7.55am and concludes at 3.05pm. Children should not be at school before this time in the morning or after this time in the after-noon, unless they are participating in specific sporting or other school activities, supervised by a staff member. The gates leading to classrooms will be open at 7.55am for children to access the classroom are-as. Children should be booked into the OSHC if they require care before 7.55am or after 3.05pm. We are pleased to have the RAINBOWS Programme once again at Sa-cred Heart this year. RAINBOWS offers children from families who have experienced a major loss, either through the separation/divorce of parents, through the death or illness of a family member, or who have experienced any other major family transition, the opportunity to

meet in a weekly support group of 3 - 5 students over a period of 12 weeks.

It has been found that when something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. If a parent dies or divorce occurs, not only do the parents grieve but the children do too. Due to their age and short life experience, children find it difficult to verbalise their feelings.

If you feel that your child(ren) may benefit from the programme, and haven’t already participated this year, please collect a consent form from Mrs Hall in the school office. Consent forms need to be signed by a par-ent before the child is eligible to participate in the programme. Please return signed consent forms to the school office by Friday 21 July 2017.

The sessions will be held at school during school time, with a trained adult working with each group. Our trained staff this year are Reita Wingard, Amanda Banks and myself as the co-ordinator at our school. If you have any queries or concerns, please ring the school office on 9251 3000.

Liddelow Scout Group

Scouting offers a variety of fun, challenging, adventurous ac-tivities for youth from 6 to 26 years of age. Youth participate in weekly meetings as well as weekend ac-tivities and camps. Liddelow Scout Group has Joeys, Cubs and Scouts with links to the older Venturers and Rov-ers. We offer a 6 week free trial. Meetings are held weekly at Hume Road Hall, Hume Road, Thornlie. Meeting times during school terms are:

Joeys 6 to 8 yrs Monday 5.30 – 6.30pm Cubs 7.5 to 11 yrs Tuesday 7.00 – 8.30pm Scouts 10.5 to 15 yrs Monday 7.00 – 9.00pm

Kidsport funding is available through the local council for eligible members and offers up to $200 towards fees.

Leader and adult helpers have just as much fun as the youth so if you are looking to get in-volved in something, we’d love to hear from you!

Woolworths Earn & Learn

We are excited to be taking part in the 2017 Woolworths Earn & Learn program.

During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned,

thanks to you.

From Tuesday 26 July until Tuesday 19 September 2017, you can collect stickers at Woolworths that go

towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor

and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children to collect on a special

sticker card. Once the special sticker card is completed, they can simply drop it into the collection box located in

the School Office or our school’s Woolworths collection box, located at Forest Lakes and Maddington Shopping

Centres.

Anyone from the community – staff, parents, grandparents, neighbours and friends - who shop at Woolworths

can collect stickers and help us earn amazing educational equipment and resources of our choice.

The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources including

Science, Technology, Mathematics, English (STEM), Sport and Arts and Crafts.

We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program.

SUSTAINABILITY – PLASTIC FREE JULY

Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness of the problems with single-

use disposable plastic and challenges people to do something about it.

If you choose to take up the challenge, you’ll be joining over one million

people, world-wide, from 130 countries in making a difference. At Sacred Heart, we are passionate about re-

ducing the amount of waste we produce and are hoping to take up the challenge of “Plastic Free Term Three”

at school.

A problem... Plastics: break up, not break down – becoming permanent pollution are mostly downcycled (made into low grade product for just one more use) or sent to landfill ‘escape’ from bins, trucks, events etc. to become ‘accidental litter’ end up in waterways and the ocean – where scientists predict there will be more tonnes of plastic than

tonnes of fish by 2050 transfer to the food chain – carrying pollutants with them increase our eco-footprint – plastic manufacturing consumes 6% of the world’s fossil fuels

Every bit of plastic ever made still exists and in the first 10 years of this century the world economy produced

more plastic than the entire 1900's!

With solutions Choosing to be part of the solution, you can act by: Avoiding products in plastic packaging (choose alternatives) Reducing where possible (opt for refills, remember your reusable shopping bags) Refusing plastics that escape as litter (e.g. straws, takeaway cups, utensils, balloons) Recycling what cannot be avoided So…are you ready to take up the challenge? CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Welcome back to Term 3. I will be taking each class separately and twice this term, to give them more techniques to help their resiliency towards managing their un-helpful emotional states of mind such as anger, frustration, anxiety, stress, depression and/or sadness. Negative emotions are not bad. In fact, getting to acknowledge what emotion you are having and work with this emotion to change this state in a calmer and relaxed way is more helpful. Your child will be happier and more content. When chil-dren are happier and more content, they are able to learn. Learning does not take place in a negative emotional state of mind or even an overly excited state of mind. I will also be concentrating on individual children who need that extra support again this term. If you would like me to help support your child, please drop me an email or make an appointment to come and see me.
