Residence Life JournalPhilosophy of the Residence Life Program

The expressed purpose of the Residence

Life Program here at Thaddeus Stevens

College of Technology is to foster self-development,

good citizenship and democratic principles. These

goals are accomplished through acquisition of

decision-making skills on the part of the student

and through emulation and promotion of values

inclusive of respect to fellow students, honesty and

the involvement of students in the residence hall

governing structure.

The Residence Life Program also seeks to create an

environment of understanding and appreciation for

the values of students from diverse backgrounds.

It is through the development of this kind of

sensitivity that students grow personally, which

impacts directly on other program purposes of

citizenship and emulation of democratic principles

as set forth in the College’s mission and purpose.

The purpose of the Residence Life Journal

is to provide a newsletter that centers

around the Residence Life Program. The journal is

informative, educational and strives to promote the

overall mission of the college within a residence life

setting and to the benefit of the campus community

at large.

It’s only the beginning now

...a pathway yet unknown

At times the sound of other steps

...sometimes we walk alone

The best beginnings of our lives

May sometimes end in sorrow

But even on our darkest days

The sun will shine tomorrow.

So we must do our very best

Whatever life may bring

And look beyond the winter chill

To smell the breath of spring.

Into each life will always come

A time to start anew

A new beginning for each heart

As fresh as morning dew.

Although the cares of life are great

And hands are bowed so low

The storms of life will leave behind

The wonder of a rainbow.

The years will never take away

Our chance to start anew

It’s only the beginning now

So dreams can still come true.

TRAVELING DURING THE SEMESTER BREAK

Recently, during the semester break period, many

of our students had the opportunity to travel. I

was one of those fortunate enough to enjoy a trip

to Rome, Italy with some of my family members.

Here are a few pictures from my

overseas excursion.

Enjoy!

MLK Day – Monday, January 21, 2013

Martin Luther King, Jr., was born Michael Luther King,

Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. He was born

on January 15, 1929 and died April 4, 1968. After graduat-

ing from high school at the age of fifteen he received the

B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College. He married

Coretta Scott and had four children: Martin Luther King III,

Yolanda King, Bernice King and Dexter Scott King. At the

age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest

man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian

Leadership Conference. Between 1957 and 1968, King trav-

eled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hun-

dred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest,

and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as

numerous articles.

Super Bowl IThe First AFL-NFL World Championship Game in profes-

sional American football, later known as Super Bowl I and

referred to in some contemporary reports as the Supergame,

was played on January 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memori-

al Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. The National Foot-

ball League (NFL) champion Green Bay Packers defeated

the American Football League (AFL) champion Kansas City

Chiefs by the score of 35–10.

One day Lamar Hunt, architect of the AFL and

owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, came across his daughter’s

Super Ball and was given the inspiration for the name of the

championship game between the upstart American Foot-

ball League and the old-guard National Football League.

The first of these “Super” contests pitted Vince Lombardi’s

Green Bay Packers (13-2) against Hank Stram’s Chiefs

(12-2-1) and was played before 61,946 fans in Los Angeles’

100,000-seat Memorial Coliseum. The television audience

for this game is estimated to have been approximately 60

million viewers. The game itself featured an unlikely hero

in Green Bay wide receiver Max McGee. Just moments after

entering the game though, he caught a 37-yard touchdown

pass from Bart Starr to cap off an 80-yard drive that gave

the Packers an early lead. On the day, McGee caught seven

passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns as the Packers

went on to win the first Super Bowl, 35-10. Each player on

the Packers received a $15,000 bonus for winning the game,

while members of the Chiefs earned $7,500. A one-minute

television commercial sold for $75,000 to $85,000; pocket

change compared to the millions spent on air time now.

Last semester the counseling office started

a group to train peer helpers and to

provide support to students. The group

plans to resume this semester on 2nd and

4th Mondays of each month.

Each meeting will address a specific topic,

and allow time for students to discuss any

current concerns. The group discussion

focuses on practical solutions and

strategies that students can apply to their

daily lives. I am looking for topics as the

group had requested.

Proposed topics are so far:How to change negative behavior…coping with change…Managing anger…Understanding Mental Illness…coping with Stress….

Welcome to January 2013

As we start a new year, remember that success always requires risk.

Here is a quote by Wayne Gretzky, a Canadian, and a former professional Ice hockey player. He stated:

“You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take”

January is a month of new beginnings. It’s a time to put the past year aside and a time to look forward to

reaching new goals and dreams. Even as the trees have lost their leaves for the winter, they too will once

again flourish as we move towards a new springtime of life. Make 2013 your best year yet!
