Top Story Karnataka government keen on creating job opportunities in the ICT sector The state government of Karnataka has announced its decision of partnering with the ICT sector in the state to create job opportunities by the end of 2020. It is anticipated that the demand for ICT professionals will reach close to 2 mn by then from its current 0.8 mn. As of now, the government will implement the recommendations put forward by the ICT group which includes making budgetary provisions for the next 4‐5 years. Additionally, it has also targeted to triple the ICT exports incubate close to 1,000 startups by 2020 to accomplish its goal. For this purpose, it has also allotted an ICT & Innovation fund for infrastructure development worth INR 10 bn and INR 1 bn fund for incubating startups. It is expected that the ICT sector in Karnataka will experience a major support from the state government. It will be interesting to see how the recommended strategies of the ICT group generate better opportunity for the sector till the year 2020. News Update

General MLGW selects Rolta India for Oracle ERP project Rolta India Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Rolta International Inc, has been selected by Memphis Light Gas and Water (MLGW) for the implementation of Oracle ERP. Under the project, Rolta will be primarily providing consulting, systems integration and software services. Furthermore, the deal also includes the customization, implementation and deployment of Oracle E‐Business site R12 applications, Telvent’s ArcFM software and PowerPlan’s suite of asset centric accounting solutions. Some of the major modules to be incorporated include financial, eAM, GIS, human resource, hyperion and business intelligence. ScaleArc receives series C funding ScaleArc Inc., has raised INR 672 mn in its series C round of funding led by Accel Partners. Existing investors including Trinity Ventures and Nexus Ventures also invested in the deal. It is expected that the company will mainly utilize the fund in order to revamp the sales and marketing domain and support its global expansion in the Big Data market. Additionally, it will also focus on enhancing its product development segment and increase its head count.


Based in Mumbai and Silicon Valley, the company offers database infrastructure software for e‐commerce and SaaS based vendors, enterprises, online digital companies and technology service providers. PromptCloud takes data crawling to the cloud PromptCloud, the operating arm of Bangalore based SDF Technologies Pvt. Ltd. has recently launched its document level crawl service for enterprises. The new solution is basically a custom search engine that is designed to facilitate users to receive near real time alerts on several topics. As of now, PromptCloud offers large scale data crawl and extraction along with Big Data solutions. It follows a business model wherein users are provided with its service via cloud computing and charged on a DaaS (Data as a Service) model. The new solution from the company will act as an on demand search engine for users which provides only relevant information. With the new solution, it is expected that users will experience a totally different experience while searching for blogs, articles, news, journals on the internet. The solution is capable of filtering customized searches on the basis of keywords, geographies and categories. Reliance Communications selects AlcatelLucent for a managed services contract Reliance communications, one of India’s largest telecom operators has selected Alcatel‐Lucent for a managed services deal worth INR 54.6 bn. The deal is an 8 year long contract till 2020 wherein it will cover the whole of Eastern and Southern India. It also happens to be the first end‐to‐end managed services contract in India. Reliance anticipates an improvement in cost effectiveness post this deal. Alcatel‐Lucent will primarily provide Reliance Communications with seamless voice and data communications services at par with international standards. It will integrate with Reliance wireless and fixed teams to create a single network management group so as to create a streamlined organizational structure. Additionally, the companies will also engage in the standardization process of tools, processes and best practices with pre defined costs reducing investment risks. With the recent move by Reliance Communications, it is anticipated that Reliance subscribers from eastern and southern India will get comparatively superior services. OnMobile empowers mobile governance for Karnataka Karnataka Government has partnered with OnMobile Global Ltd. to implement mobile governance in the state. Initial launch of the m‐governance service ensures partial access to the facilities at the moment. The m‐governance services will allow government to provide citizen‐oriented services via mobile‐enabled service delivery system.


Services available in the preliminary phase include information services, electricity, water, landline, mobile bill payment and other utility services and traffic alert services with details regarding public transport routes and timing. It offers multiple options for payment including online payment and credit card, amongst others. More citizen services will be made available beyond the first phase where OnMobile will continue to partner with Karnataka Government. India Today Group partners with Affle for video and rich media advertising India Today Group has entered into a partnership with Affle for enhanced advertisement via video and rich media. India Today Group will utilize Affle’s ad network, Ripple, for video advertising on its online portals and deliver video and rich media ads on tablet platforms. Since its launch five months ago, Ripple has already secured over five bn monthly ad requests. Affle has also partnered with Yahoo and ESPN Cricinfo for similar rich media and mobile advertising service in India. Vserv in partnership with Airtel launches AudiencePro Mobile ad company Vserv.mobi in partnership with Bharti Airtel launched a mobile advertising solution, AudiencePro, in India. It leverages on data form telecom operator for providing improved targeting capability to advertisers. The service will enable advertiser to utilize information such as demographics, spending power, network usage, location, content relevance and device specific data, amongst other collected from telecom operator. The service is available as a value added solution for advertisers on company’s mobile advertising platform. The service will be chargeable on usage over Vserv’s standard CPC and CPM advertising rates. Nokia engrossing young consumers in Lumia 920 marketing campaign Nokia has started a new marketing campaign for its upcoming Smartphone, Lumia 920. The company will distribute the new device amongst few selected groups of friends and feature their opinions regarding the phone largely via social media. The Finnish handset maker has already launched a Facebook campaign to select a group of five to six friends for the purpose. The group will be finalized based on the photos and videos each group upload on company's Facebook page. This part of the campaign has been named ‘TV Ad Star Hunt.’ Nokia has also started another initiative namely ‘Your wish is my app.’ In this latter initiative consumers will be asked to suggest apps that they feel are required. Top 36 ideas will be shortlisted based on popularity on Facebook and Twitter. Augmented reality app launched by Hindustan Times Hindustan Times, following the footsteps of Times of India, has launched an augmented reality application, ARPlus. The application allows readers to interact with a newspaper item and access media related to the news. The news however has to be supported by the app.


All readers need to do is run the app which turns on the smartphone camera. The app scans the ARPlus logo on the newspaper item and looks for available multimedia content in the backend database. Depending on availability, images, videos or other multimedia contents are presented to the users. The company wants to use the app to promote mobile and online contents, as well as for advertising. The app is currently available on Android and iOS platform. News Update Regulatory Abolishment of service charges on broadband proposed by DoT The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has proposed to the Ministry of Finance to do away with service charges on broadband internet services in next Budget. It believes abolishing services charges will make broadband services affordable for consumers across the country and will lead to increases broadband penetration. Presently a 12% service tax is levied on broadband internet services, similar to that of other telecom services. Government aims to achieve the ambitious target of 175 mn broadband users in India by 2015. According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) there were 14.88 mn broadband users in the country as in Nov 2012. There is a lot of optimism as far as India is concerned. The focus will not only be on feature or smartphones but will also be on tablets. India is a very important market for us and in the last couple of years we had a great success with feature phones here. Right now our focus is to support our customers and comprehend the desires of consumers and the market as customers transition from 2G to 3G, from feature phones to smartphones. We will continue to work with our Indian brand partners and provide them our products."
