    Republics In Political Theory

In political theory and political science, the term "republic"is generally applied to a state where the government'spolitical power depends solely on the consent of the peoplegoverned. This usage leads to two sets of problematicclassification.

The essential characteristic of republican governance is thesharing of power between a unitary leader, an aristocratic

institution, and a plebeian institution. Machiavelli arguesthat the counterbalancing of these three interests leads to asounder and more stable government than monarchy, aristocracy, or democracy alone could. This understandingof the term has seen recent renaissance in the work oftheorists such as Philip Pettit and Cass Sunstein.
