INTRODUCTIONLondon Biscuits Berhadwas incorporated in 1981 as a confectionery manufacturer. In 1994, the company was acquired by the Liew Family which provided fresh impetus to the companys growth. A new factory premises was purchased as its new operating premises and new production lines were installed to increase the production capacity of its existing products and to introduce new product types.

In 1998, LBB diversified into cake manufacturing with the launch of its London Pie Cakes featuring individually packaged cakes with centre filled cream in a wide assortment of flavours. The success of this cake range prompted a further expansion in 2000 into the roll cake segment with the introduction of the swiss roll cakes. As of today, LBB is the largest domestic cake manufacturer and uniquely the only one which produces roll, layer and round cakes of which the roll cakes are the key product segment of LBB .

Corporate DevelopmentsIn early 2002, LBB was successfully listed on the 2nd Board of Bursa Malaysia and this was followed up within a short period of time with a transfer to the Main Board of Bursa in late 2003. The company also become a Disney licensee in Malaysia, a status which it retains til today, for cake and corn confectionery under its Yummies brand featuring classic Disney characters.

In 2005, LBB acquired its 1st ever subsidiary, Kinos Food Industries Sdn Bhd which was a very exciting acquisition as Kinos had very similar product ranges which complimented LBBs existing distribution channel.

In 2007, LBB followed up this by acquiring a majority stake in Khee San Berhad, a company listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia. Khee San was and is the single largest domestic manufacturer of sweets and candy confectionery as well as being one of the oldest wafer manufacturers.

Since 2010, LBB and its subsidiaries have been investing significantly to upgrade its production facilities as well as increasing production capacity to satisfy customer demands on both product availability and quality. Since 2005, the Company has also been establishing its brand equity by embarking on various brand building campaigns in Malaysia to improve the brand awareness of the London Brand and this has now been expanded to Singapore where the company is actively participating in high profile major media events to elevate its brand positioning.

Today, LBB is major confectionery manufacturer with distribution channels in over 35 countries predominantly in the South East Asia Region & the Asia Pacific Region with over 200 individual products types.

TYPES OF MATERIALINTRODUCTIONThe use of paper and paperboards for food packaging dates back to the 17th century with accelerated usage in the later part of the19th century (Kirwan 2003). Paper and paperboard are sheet materials made from an interlaced network of cellulose fibers derived from wood by using sulfate and sulfite. The fibers are then pulpedand/or bleached and treated with chemicals such as slimicides andstrengthening agents to produce the paper product. FDA regulates the additives used in paper and paperboard food packaging (21 CFR Part 176). Paper and paperboards are commonly used in corrugatedboxes, milk cartons, folding cartons, bags and sacks, and wrappingpaper. Tissue paper, paper plates, and cups are other examples of paper and paperboard products.PAPERBOARDPaperboard. Paperboard is thicker than paper with a higher weight per unit area and often made in multiple layers. It is commonlyused to make containers for shippingsuch as boxes, cartons, and trays and seldom used for direct food contact. The varioustypes of paperboard are as follows (Soroka 1999): White boardMade from several thin layers of bleached chemical pulp, white board is typically used as the inner layer of a carton. White board may be coated with wax or laminated with polyethylene for heat sealability, and it is the only form of paperboard recommended for direct food contact. Solid boardPossessing strength and durability, solid board has multiple layers of bleached sulfate board. When laminated with polyethylene, it is used to create liquid cartons (known as milk board). Solid board is also used to package fruit juices and soft drinks. ChipboardChipboard is made from recycled paper and often contains blemishes and impurities from the original paper, which makes it unsuitable for direct contact with food, printing, and folding. It is often lined with white board to improve both appearance and strength. The least expensive formof paperboard, chipboard is used to make the outer layers of cartons for foods such as tea and cereals. FiberboardFiberboard can be solid or corrugated. The solid type has an inner white board layer and outer kraft layer and provides good protection against impact and compression. When laminated with plastics or aluminum, solid fibreboard can improve barrier propertiesandis used to package dryproducts such as coffee and milk powder. The corrugated type, also known as corrugated board, is made with 2 layers of kraft paper with a central corrugating (or fluting) material.Fiberboards resistance to impact abrasion and crushing damage makes it widely used for shipping bulk food and case packing of retail food products.

CONCLUSIONThe primary purpose of food packaging must continue to be maintaining the safety, wholesomeness, and quality of food. The impact of packaging waste on the environment can be minimized by prudently selecting materials, following EPA guidelines, and reviewing expectations of packaging in terms of environmental impact. Knowledgeable efforts by industry, government, and consumers will promote continued improvement, and an understanding of the functional characteristics of packaging will prevent much of the well-intentioned but ill-advised solutions that do not adequately account for both preconsumer and postconsumer packaging factors.
