1. Context of the Conference Theme
The trilogy of business, economy and environment forms the core of development agenda for any
nation. While individually they make their own demands on the system, their interplay makes it
a quite complex system. This has always been a challenge to all those responsible for managing
the system and its sub-system. In past, many models have emerged in different contexts to
address the problem of growth and development at macro, micro and individual levels.
However, in the present VUCA world both the conventional systems and the solution models
seem to be proving fragile. This necessitates searching for The New Normal.
Certain issues related to growth and development that have dominated intellectual
debates/discussions, like inclusive growth, human development index, environmental
protection, stakeholder value creation, corporate governance etc. still remain almost unresolved.
At the same time, new opportunities are being created in the space of business and economy as a
result of technological advances, mainly in the domains of information technology and data
analytics. All these have resulted into the emergence of The New Normal at both the spheres: the
acceptance of the VUCA world as a new reality, and addressing the unresolved issues as well as
newly emerging ones in the new realm.
In this backdrop, 22nd NICOM was organized on the theme ‘Business, Economy and
Environment: The New Normal’ aims at making a serious attempt in discussing all the above
aspects. It comprised of plenary sessions delivered by different eminent academicians, industry
leaders, and policy makers; and papers presented by scholars from academia and industry.

Prof. Deepak Danak addressing the audience by sharing the introductory remarks about the conference
Mr. Sunil Parekh in his inaugural speech discussed the beginning of Communist theories in ‘The
Manifesto’ of Karl Marx consisting of theories similar to those of Capitalist theories. According
to him, we have gradually learnt that totally Capitalist economies do not result in social
development. Mr. Parekh said that it is now important for the corporates to focus on three things.
The first is the goal which helps the company in deciding as to what their final destination is.
Then, he focused on the factors which required companies to change. The second important thing
for companies is to continuously change, upgrade and innovate. The third point he emphasized
was that the market belongs to the ones who create the market. He also discussed the major
macroeconomic factors like foreign trade wars, tax regimes, and migration, which have resulted
in tougher laws for visas for travelers due to fears of foreign workers taking away jobs in their
respective countries. He traced that in order to solve all of these issues, companies will have to be
more agile and learn to deal with ambiguity. With this, he ended the session on the note that all
of us need to change our economic growth incentives if want to help business development which
leads to societal development.

management for costumes, set materials & accessories can be employed for the same. According
to him, “Just like gravity, one can’t deny globalization.” Around 20-40% of the Bollywood
audience is non-Indian; they are now getting connected to Indian songs, dance and music, and
the influence is growing rapidly. This represents globalization in the field of entertainment. India
produces an average of 1200 movies every year in 23 languages.
Shri Bharathan also shared that after Hollywood, the Indian Entertainment Industry is the second
largest growing film industry. The main pillars of globalization, namely Production, Capital,
Technology, Talent and Market, need to be reinvented to make the Indian film industry truly
global. He ended the discussion by mentioning the challenges of globalization, like creating smart
partnerships, efficient distribution infrastructure, ensuring cross cultural appeal, and more. He

11. Contribution of the Conference to Existing Research
The main objective of NICOM 2019 was to provide a good platform to the academic and industry
practitioners to discuss their thoughts on the trilogy of business, economy and environment. The
conference had set a nice platform for opportunity to learn about developments taking place not
only in the field of economics and finance but also other peripheral areas worldwide. It
encouraged the delegates and participants to think about the existing models and solutions
available and unresolved issues in the dominion of business. In this aspect, NICOM 2019 has
surely broaden up the sphere of present knowledge with new ideas and approaches. Some of the
research concepts discussed during the conference will be helpful for the practitioners to use them
practically for effectively managing their businesses. This conference has also provided an
excellent networking opportunities among the academicians, policy makers and industry experts.
Policy making is the prerogative of central and state governments. But for policy formulation,
government collects information from groups at grassroot level. The discussions and
deliberations which took place during the three days of the conference in the areas like rural
development, corporate governance, business education, taxation, corporate social responsibility,
among others, will definitely help the policy makers to frame new policies or revise the existing
