Report on National Conference on Wireless Technologies, 3G Cellular Network Services And Applications: IETE Pune Centre organized a highly successful conference on the above theme on 8 th ,9 th and 10 th Jan 2010. The venue was Padmashri Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Engg & Technology, Pimpri, Pune. The conference was largely attended and highly appreciated. Learned speakers from different parts of the country presented technical papers with rich content. The conference was inaugurated on 9 th Jan, by the Chief Guest, Shri Aloke Kaul, Chief General Manager BSNL Maharashtra Telecom Circle who came from Mumbai. The presiding dignitary was Shri R K Gupta Council Member, Chairman Technical Programmes Committee, IETE HQ New Delhi and former Engineer in Chief Doordarshan. The keynote address was delivered by Shri RN Padukone Principle GM from BSNL Corporate Office N.Delhi on the subject “3G & FMC”. The venue for the glittering inaugural function was the DY Patil Medical College Auditorium. Other dignitaries on dias were Dr PW Wani Dean Faculty of Engg Pune Univ, Dr R K Jain Principal and Prof S R Jog Head of the Dept, E & TC apart from Chairman Shri.R.V.Datar and Hon. Secy Shri.T.V.Mahadevan of IETE Pune Centre. Hon Treasurer IETE Pune Centre Ms Leena Bokil introduced the Chief Guest. The function commenced with invocation song and lighting of lamp. Shri Aloke Kaul released a souvenir that also included a CD of abstracts of papers received. Dignitaries off the dias were Prof.S.K.Kshirsagar, Prof.S.V.Kharkar, Dr.K.R.Phadke, Shri.M.G.Kulkarni, Shri.M.Y.Thote, Shri.S.N.Joshi, Dr.A.N.Gaikwad, Grp.Capt.G.M.Apte, Capt.R.K.Bharucha, Shri.Ashok Kale and Shri.V.A.Shaligram. Shri RV Datar Chairman IETE in his welcome address explained, why the theme related to wireless and 3G cellular technologies, has become very relevant today and vital for the progress of the country and therefore needed to be deliberated upon by the experts from the field and the academia, to chalk out a road map for wireless and particularly the cellular technology to be followed in the country. Shri Aloke Kaul highlighted the benefits of 3G and also made a strong plea to the Pune local authorities for reducing the charges of rehabilitation for laying the optical fibre cables and making them at par with other metro cities like Chennai, so that telecom network of Pune could grow faster and add to the overall progress of the city. Shri RK Gupta in his presidential address congratulated IETE Pune for its excellent performance and praised the DY Patil Institutions for their support and teamwork in organizing the conference and mentioned about the various activities of IETE like virtual lab CDs, and countrywide E-Lan Edusat based classrooms which are about to be introduced in 8 major cities in the first phase. Dr P. W.Wani stressed the importance of making frequent updation of syllabus to remain relevant with the fast pace of telecom and wireless technology and explained the efforts being made in this direction. Dr R K Jain expressed his happiness about his Institute being the venue and congratulated the IETE and DY Patil staff for successfully organizing the function and pledged his wholehearted support for future activities. Prof SR Jog HOD of E & TC Deptt and an Executive Committee member of IETE Pune gave information on the technical papers to be presented in the conference. Shri.T.V.Mahadevan, Hon.secretary, IETE Pune centre also spoke on the occasion.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Mrs Kulkarni of Padmashree Dr.D.Y. Patil Institute of Engineering & Technology. The venue for the inaugural function was the Auditorium of DY Patil Medical College which was packed to capacity.Earlier on 8th Jan 2010, a tutorial session was held for students and it was inaugurated by Dr PW Wani Dean Faculty of Engg Pune Univ. while the Principal Dr Jain was in the chair. IETE Pune Chairman welcomed the audience and dignitaries. The whole day session covered topics such as GPS, Access Technology, Evolution of 3G & introduction to 4G, and Software Radios, among others. About 175 students registered for the tutorial and evinced keen interest.In the main conference sessions experts from BSNL presented papers on VAS, Billing, Customer care, Fixed Mobile Convergence, Vision of Cellular Network in Rural India in 2015 etc., while experts and researchers from academia presented 22 papers on various topics in Wireless Technology apart from 3G /4G, micro strip antennas, and also included were defense communications systems and safety hazards, software radios etc. Shri AM Joshi former Wireless Adviser WPC presented a paper related to Auctioning of frequencies for cellular services.The conference ended with a panel discussion and a validation session. The panel was headed by Dr MS Sutaone HOD of E& TC from COEP. The participants expressed their appreciation about the rich and in depth content of the various papers.The following experts presented invited papers on 9th and 10th Jan.2010.
