Activities organized by UOC - TSNUK SPIE Student Chapter
14th International Young Scientists Conference “Optics & High
Technology Material Science SPO 2013”
The 14th International Young scientist conference “Optics and High Technology Material
Science - SPO 2013” was held at the Faculty of Physics, Taras Shevchenko National University
of Kyiv, on 24-27 October 2013. It was organized by the United Optical Communities -OSA,
SPIE Student Chapters and EOS Student Club of our University. The format of SPO conference
is very similar to IONS. It means SPO is the conference provided for students by students.
Organizers chose this type of development during conference’s creation and this tradition is
supported by new students’ generations for all 14 years. The SPO conference shows optics
development and the main ways of basic optics courses’ education process in Ukraine.
This year International Young Scientists conference “Optics and High Technology Material
Science – SPO-2013” was highly standard organized. 2nd-6th course students took an active part
in SPO conference’s organizing as usual. That specialty made SPO outstanding from all other
scientific events in Ukraine. One of participants Prof. Guy Monteil said: “I have never seen
such events organized by students so good. I would follow our example by all means and would
make the same project in Besançon (France).” OSA, SPIE Student Chapter members invested
an original labour for 14th conference outstanding creating in comparison to all the previous
ones.
SPO 2013 poster session
SPO Conference success was confirmed by large quantity participants from different
countries. This year SPO conference was attended by Dr. Shrawan Kumar Jha from Imperial
College London, aforementioned Prof. Guy Monteil from Ecole Normale Supérieure de
Méchanique et de Microtéchnique – Institut Femto-ST, delegation from Shizuoka University
and MSc. and PhD. students from Russia, Belarus, Hungary, Finland, Armenia and Ukraine of
course.
Associate Prof. Mykola Likholit, the director at official government enterprise of
special instrument making «Arsenal» presented his researches for SPO conference participants
for the first time.
SPO 2013 plenary session: Associate Prof. Mykola Likholit, the director at official government
enterprise of special instrument making «Arsenal»
It was pleased to inform that official government enterprise of special instrument making
«Arsenal» set up laser gyroscope system into new space launching site under Prof. Likholit’s
administration. The newest Ukrainian developments of the Earth Remote Sensing were
presented by him at the SPO conference. This lecture was acquired by the conference
participants in the best way because of clear description scientific researches’ influence on the
national economy.
Dr. Olena Vertsanova, general director of «MELYTEC-UKRAINE» (main seller of optical
devices in Ukraine) presented her scientific works and newest designs in microscopy. SPO
conference participants received a possibility to acquaint with inverted microscope Olympus GX-
51 and used it for their researches thanks to «MELYTEC-UKRAINE». Conference chair Prof.
Poperenko told about collaboration of several years' standing between Taras Shevchenko
National University of Kyiv (Ukraine) and Shizuoka University (Japan) thanks to SPO during his
opening speech.
SPO 2013 plenary session.
SPO 2013 social events
Organizers hope sincerely that SPO conference attending will help young scientists to
develop their skills, generalize acquired knowledge in optics, get to know new scientific
achievements and find possible future colleagues.
Traveling Lecturer Visit
On November 21, 2013 scientific workshop was organized. Prof. Brian Culshaw from
University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, United Kingdom) and Peter E. Andersen from Technical
University of Denmark (Roskilde, Denmark) were invited by UOC - OSA and SPIE Chapters due
to Traveling Lecturer Visit program.
Brian Culshaw told students about «Photonics in Application, Research and Education:
What might we learn from past experiences» and Peter E. Andersen told us about «Green
diode-based lasers for biophotonics». Prof. Andersen as appointed Deputy Editor of Optics
Letters magazine gave an interesting talk «How to publish your manuscript». Each presentation
coverage main photonics and biophotonics problems: classic themes and novel processes.
The LabTour were provided by professors and students of TSNUK. Prof. Andersen and
Prof. Culshaw visited laser, AFM, nonlinear physics laboratories. After lectures students and
invited lecturers were invited to lunch organized by chapter’s officers.
Student Chapter presentations
UOC - SPIE student chapter officers’ provided four meetings for promoting our student
chapter during February-March. All events were directed to main chapter activities coverage.
On 28 February 2014 we met with first course students pursuing BSc. and MSc. degrees
in Laser and optoelectronic techniques.
On 9 April 2014 / 24 April 2014 we met with students studies at Optics-Mechanical
College and Physics-Mathematical Lyceum.
On 13 April 2014 was an Open Doors Day. We met with parents and children. Activity
was provided under K-12 program.
All expected activity’s goals were implemented. We involved 3 new members to SPIE
student chapter. Officers explained chapter benefits, services and activities provided last year.
The main ways of grants and scholarships searching were explained by community’s members.
Chapter’s members who were awarded by travel grants inform about their trips. The
supplement materials created by officers were used during meetings.
Video about activities provided by United Optical Communities was presented (link)
Welcome party for participants was provided.
1st summer school in optics and applied physics
In summer 2014 united optical communities student chapters organized the 1st Summer
School in Optics and Applied Physics devoted to the International year of light.
This event was provided from 21-26 July for pre-college students whom studies at
ukrainian secondary schools and are interested in physics and was partially co-founded by OSA.
Before event starts we invited children from Kyiv’s schools. Student chapter’s officers created
event advertise video (link) for promotion between teachers, parents and students.
Attendees received interesting information in optics science usually studied in secondary
schools. Lessons were carried out by graduate students, specialized in optics and photonics.
There were organized lectures which covered following themes:«Human vision: mechanism and
eyes’ anatomy», «Light and color», «Optical illusions», «Light: wave or particle?»,
«Interference and diffraction phenomena», «Laser and its application», «Holograms»,
«Alternative energy: solar cells», «Biomedical optics», «Optics: present and future» and other.
Marianna Kovalova gave a lecture
about human vision and human eyes’
basic anatomy.
Taras Hanulia presented basis of interference
and diffraction processes.
Yurii Hyrka during his presentation “Laser and its application”
Yevheniia Chernukha told students about Optical science in present and in future. Her
presentation shows last optical technologies applied in daily life.
There were organized special leadership hours at school. Student chapter’s officers gave
promotional lecture about SPIE, OSA, EOS organizations and their activities, grants, scholarship
and programs.
Organizers provide two practice days. The optical phenomena demonstration and video
lectures became a peculiarity of lessons. The accent was made on practice with basic optical
devices. On the last summer school’s day 26 July all students, who has succesfully completed
scientific program received certificate of participation.
After lectures the Pizza party for participants and organizers were provided.
