St. Pius X School UpdateThis summer has been full of activity here at Saint Pius X. The cafeteria has been updated; the updates include a new floor, cafeteria tables, and a new computer and check-out system for Mrs. Laret. A special thank you to the St. Pius X Home and School Association for purchasing the tables and the computer system. Thanks to Mr. Marsh and his crew, other updates included painting various hallways, trim, and classrooms along with normal summer cleaning and maintenance. Phase I of the Capital Campaign is moving along; we are excited to see the new build being completed and the Phase II kick-off start. Inside the office, we have been busy updating schedules, setting up class rosters, and attending professional development with many of our

staff members. We are very excited to be John Peterson Scholarship providers for the 2018-2019 school year. It was nice meeting Father David Young, our new pastor; we look forward to continue building a campus wide community here at Saint Pius X. We are excited to see all of you come in late August.

In the May 2018 edition of Connections, we talked about the Eight Beatitudes that Jesus gave us and the six that were added by Pope Francis. Below are some examples and questions for day-by-day living to help “Our Common Home.”

• How are we conserving our Earth’s environmental resources? While teaching a class of seventh graders, we listed some things that could be done to help the environment. One student stated that his dad let the water run forever while he was brushing his teeth. Is that a waste of water? Yes. The next week he came back to class and said that they had a long talk and that his dad was now just turning on the water when it was needed. As a family, they also discovered ideas of other ways to save water usage.

As another example, one student said that his mother cut up old towels for rags and used them instead of paper towels. Another family started turning off room lights and opening the curtains for the natural light to come in. When you can safely use something a second time, this is another way to help save “Our Common Home.” I started trying these suggestions and I not only saved resources, but I also saved money. The list could go on and on.

• How do we treat others? Do we help them? Do we see everyone and everything as God’s creation? Do we stop and let someone in a church or a store parking lot go first? Do we open the door for someone to enter? Do we ask a new person at your job or at school to join you for an activity regardless of their religion, race, or the country where they were born? Do I treat myself, every person and everything with respect? Again, the list could go on and on.

St. Paul wrote in Galatians 5:13-15: “For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment; You shall love your neighbor as yourself. “

God bless.

How can we help “our common home” day-to-day? A simple way is to turn off running water when not in use when you brush your teeth.

You save water instead of wasting it.

Beat the Back-to-School BluesThe pencils are sharpened and the new backpack is stuffed with supplies; everyone is excited and ready for the first day of school. But before you and your family jump into the new school year, make sure to reset your children’s sleep schedules.

After a summer of late nights and lazy mornings, it is likely that your child could use help adjusting to the earlier bedtimes and wake-up calls. Not only will this help to prevent stressful mornings for everyone, but it is also imperative for learning. Insufficient rest has been linked to fatigue and concentration problems in kids, resulting in lower grades and trouble at school.

These three tips can help your child successfully get back into the swing of school days:

1. Gradually Adjust Bedtimes.

Do not wait until the night before school starts to set your child’s bedtime. The sudden change could make it difficult to fall asleep. Instead, slowly start making bedtime earlier about two weeks before the first day. Not sure what time to set bedtime? Kids 6-12 years old need ten to twelve hours of sleep, while teenagers need eight to nine hours.

2. Create a Nighttime Routine.

If your child does not already have a set bedtime routine, now is the perfect time to start one. Calming activities like taking a bath and reading a book can help your child wind down for bedtime. If the same process is repeated nightly, it will cue your child’s brain that it is time to sleep.

3. Take Technology Out of the Bedroom

Lax summer rules may have meant that your child was allowed to play on a tablet in bed, but to get back to a regular sleep schedule, it is important to keep electronics out of the bedroom. Make a rule that all devices need to be turned off one hour before bed.

Wishing all students, a happy and healthy school year!

Thank You, St. Pius X!The St. Pius X Military Outreach Program would like to thank our fellow parishioners, Scout troops, students, St. Vincent de Paul, and VFW Post 9473 for the ongoing support of our ministry.  Below are some of the letters, emails, and a picture that we have received over the past few months since our spring drive.  This is why we continue to do what we do!  Thank You!

Thank you so much for sending all of the care packages.  The troops have loved coming in, grabbing a cup of coffee and some GS cookies. Included is a picture of myself, and then a couple of our volunteers at the USO. Thanks again! God bless! ~ USO Fenty

I got my care packages! Thank you to everyone that has helped! It definitely makes being away from home a lot better.  I enjoyed the rosary the most! I keep it in my OCP blouse!  Thank you very much. ~ PFC Malone, Julia

I just received my care packages from St. Pius.  Thank you so much for sending them.  It is always a warm feeling to know someone back home is thinking about us!  Please give my appreciation to everyone that is involved.  I hope you have a great day!

Take care, Stephen Caron

Thank you for always thinking about us and sending us care packages!  We truly appreciate the love and support we receive from St. Pius Church!  Every time we receive a package, Jon and I sit down and read all the letters from the children.  I’ve kept every letter sent to us in a scrapbook or on display in my office as they continue to put smiles on our faces.  Knowing we have support and a little taste of home coming in care packages definitely makes wearing the uniform and being away from our family and friends a little easier.  Thank you!  We can’t thank you enough.

With lots of love, Jon and Julie Skogen

Enjoy a little piece of history with the pieces of the flag that was previously flown. The Skogens donated eleven stars that were cut from a retired flag for us to include in our packages to our deployed soldiers, with the label...”I am part of our American flag that has flown over the USA.  I

can no longer fly.  The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn.  Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten.” Krista Schumacher Military Outreach Program

Liturgy of the Word for ChildrenLiturgy of the Word for Children is a program that has been inspiring me for more than fifteen years. During the 10:15 AM and 12:00 PM Masses, children four years old through the fourth grade are invited to leave the assembly in the church and to gather to hear the Gospel message in words more to their level of understanding. Over the past decade and a half, these young people have taught me much about my own faith journey, both by challenge and by affirmation. I know that I speak for the other facilitators in saying that we are all continuing to learn from these children the definition of having the “child-like” faith that Jesus talks about.

When the priest or deacon invites the children to come forward and join the facilitator for the Liturgy of the Word, the individual reactions can be mixed. Sometimes, the children are a bit timid to step up, waiting to see a familiar face or a friend. Then there are the ones who exuberantly run down the aisle to be part of the group; realistically, they might just want to be a candle bearer or carry the Lectionary! Still, these are the children who set my heart on fire! This uninhibited enthusiasm is an open demonstration to the entire congregation that something very important is about to happen and they do not want to miss out. WOW, what a testimonial to hearing God’s Word!

Liturgy of the Word for Children resumes on September 3, 2018 and will continue through May 2019 at the 10:15 AM and 12:00 PM Masses. Currently, the children leave the church and gather in the PAC room in the school for about twenty minutes, listening to the readings and discussion before returning to their families. I look forward to the completion of the church improvements when Liturgy of the Word for Children will no longer leave the church and, instead, assemble in one of the new meeting areas of the church.

For those children returning to the program, welcome back and we look forward to your excitement and inspiration! For the children who will be joining us for the first time this year, we are very happy to share God’s Word with you each Sunday. Please join us often!

6 ST. PIUS X CHURCH AND SCHOOL • 1051 S. WAGGONER ROAD • REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO 43068

Monsignor David Funk and John Beyer kicked off Phase II of our “Continuing to Renew All Things in Christ” Capital Campaign at all the Masses in late April 2018. In his remarks, Monsignor Funk stated, “As we reflect on the challenge before us, we recall the marvelous witness of the devout Catholics on whose shoulders we stand. Bearing in mind the noble sacrifices of these men and women, we honor their memories by doing our part to further this great commission given to us by Our Lord.”

During Phase II of Our Capital Campaign, we are asking everyone who calls St. Pius X Church and School his or her home to:

• Pray for the success of the Combined Phase I and Phase II Capital Campaign.

• Be an ambassador by becoming informed and involved, by enthusiastically sharing this information with as many people as you can and by encouraging others to become involved.

• Make your sacrificial pledge.

St. Pius X needs your continued generosity to achieve our parish’s goal. Every member of our parish family is essential to our success; therefore, each family is asked to make a sacrificial gift to this

second phase of the campaign to the best of their ability. Every household is asked to prayerfully consider how their generosity can reflect their gratitude for the gifts that God has given them. Please reflect on this statement from Deuteronomy 16:10: “The measure of your own free will offering should be in proportion to the blessing the Lord has bestowed on you.”

If you are one of the many benefactors who have already completed a pledge to our Capital Campaign, we ask that you please consider making another pledge to Phase II. If you are one of our benefactors who is continuing to make payments to your pledge for Phase I, we would ask that you extend your pledge payments for an additional two years.

At the writing of this article, we currently have received $434,079 in pledges for Phase II. That leaves a balance of $497,921 left to raise in pledges. Father David J. Young, our new pastor, is very excited about our new build.

“Remember not the events of the past… See, I am doing something new!” Isaiah 43:19

As I write this, I am three days back to my life’s routine after attending my first Power and Purpose Conference (PPC) in Steubenville, Ohio. This year’s annual Catholic conference, held on the campus of the Franciscan University, was hosted on June 8-10. The event is an opportunity to experience the movement of God’s Holy Spirit.

I admit I was a bit apprehensive about attending a charismatic weekend, but my soul was also yearning for change and renewal. A series of life changes, including becoming an empty-nester and the loss of several important people in my life over the past few years, had sapped my spirit. While I was doing pretty well with my faithfulness and long-suffering, I was not doing as well in the joy and patience departments. I needed courage to face God and thank Him for all things, to step back and see how He was working His will in my life. I needed to rediscover my relationship with Him and listen to Him speak.

This year’s theme, “Let Us Begin… See I Am Doing Something New (Is 43:19),” was the perfect antidote for my spiritual weariness. Through a weekend of worship, live music, workshops, testimonies, dialogue, personal and communal prayer, the Eucharistic Adoration, reconciliation, and healing services, our Steubenville ministry team helped us discern that God’s mercy is always present. By surrendering our heart to Him, the Spirit can empower and transform us and create us anew.

A record attendance of nearly one thousand reassured me that I was not alone in my spiritual quest. The university is planning for thirty-five percent growth in 2019, evidence that the Spirit’s message is powerful, has purpose, and is moving through us to a world that desperately needs something new.

If you would like to experience the power and purpose of the Holy Spirit in your life, learn more about this conference online at steubenvilleconferences.com/adult/ppc. The event is typically held on the second weekend of June. Contact our 2019 PPC Ambassador, April Heydinger, at [email protected] or 614-306-8723 to express your interest in attending next year’s conference with other St. Pius parishioners.
