Renewable energy is generally defined as energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat.

What is Renewable Energy

Hydro EnergyHydro energy is simply energy that is

takenfrom water and converted to electricity.

The most common method of using energy from water is a hydroelectric dam, where water coming down through an area causes turbines to rotate and the energy is captured to run a generator.

Hydro EnergyAdvantages

High yieldReservoirs have multiple usesLess air pollution than fossil fuel combustion

Disadvantages:Human population displacementMore significant breeding ground for diseaseReduces availability of water downstreamEcosystem impacts

Wind EnergyWind energy is an alternative to fossil fuels,

is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation and uses little land.

Wind turbines are usually sited on high hills and mountain ridges to take advantage of the prevailing winds.

Wind EnergyAdvantages

Renewable and freeVery clean source of energyLong operating lifeLand can be used for other purposes

DisadvantagesEnergy storage issuesOnly practical in areas that are windy enoughVisual pollutionDanger to birds

Solar EnergySolar energy is radiant light and heat

from the sun harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as  solar heating, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture and artificial photosynthesis.

solar panels create electricity by converting radiant sunlight into usable electrical power via a phenomena coined the “photovoltaic effect.”

Renewable and freePollution free energy Used in remote areas where it is too expensive

to extend the electricity power grid.

Biomass EnergyBiomass is biological material derived from

living, or recently living organisms. It most often refers to plants or plant-based materials which are specifically called lignocellulosic biomass.

As an energy source, biomass can either be used directly via combustion to produce heat, or indirectly after converting it to various forms of biofuel.

Biomass EnergyAdvantages

VersatileRenewableNo net CO2 emissions (ideally)Emits less SO2 and NOx than fossil fuels

DisadvantagesLow energy density/yieldLand conversionInstallation cost is high

Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is the heat from the

Earth. It's clean and sustainable.

Resources of geothermal energy range from the shallow ground to hot water and hot rock found a few miles beneath the Earth's surface, and down even deeper to the extremely high temperatures of molten rock called magma.

AdvantagesRenewableEasy to exploit in some casesCO2 production less than with fossil fuelsHigh net energy yield

DisadvantagesNot available everywhereH2S pollutionProduces some water pollution (somewhat similar

to mining)
