RemoteRig Remote Control Your Station Over

The Internet

Ash Clark VK3SSB

What RemoteRig is…

• The RemoteRig system is a hardware solution to enable full control of your transceiver & many accessories, remotely via an internet connection.

• Essentially, you can view RemoteRig as a wireless, internet link which connects the detachable face of your radio, to the base unit of your radio.

Ham Radio Deluxe…

• The most common form of Remote Control used in AR has been Ham Radio Deluxe.

• Ham Radio Deluxe caters for control only, audio is not supported. VoIP used instead.

• Requires use of PC’s which cause instability.

How RemoteRig Compares

- It’s a stand alone system – No computers required – 2-Way high quality audio – Extremly low latency – Unique CW support (discussed in later slide) – Built in CW keyer – Serial ports for PA/Rotator – Easy WEB and USB setup

How Could You Use It?

Connect to your Remote Station located in a good RF spot from your small, city home. • No space for your dream antennas

• RF Noise

• Choice of any good RF site

• Eliminate interference to neighbours

• Access 1KW permit

How Could You Use It?

To connect to your home station while travelling or away from home. • In your hotel room

• Paddle Boat Mundoo, WIA conference

• Frequently shifting house

How Could You Use It?

To connect to your home station while mobile! • Why not be a super dooper mobile station!

• Some issue with poor 3G signals. OK

• Mobile in Sydney, transmitting from Horsham, talking on Ginini…

The IT side

• Internet IP issue

• Seek help

• DynDNS or Static IP

• Great instruction manual

• Easy & accessible interface.

Audio

• Next to no latency as audio is not compressed

• Quality is changeable depending on your internet speeds

• Highest quality uses roughly 300kbps bandwidth.

• I use quite a low quality setting but do not notice any compromise, nor get any negative reports.

The following quality settings is available:

CW • The RemoteRig supports use of CW very

nicely.

• It generates it’s own side tone and mutes the sidetone generated by the radio for latency reasons.

• It also combats jitter issues by allowing you to set a delay for the commencement of transmission!

Regulations

Control of equipment at an amateur station

(1) The licensee must ensure that an amateur station is operated at all times by a

qualified operator or qualified person in attendance at the amateur station,

unless the station is:

(a) an amateur repeater station; or

(b) an amateur beacon station; or

(c) an amateur station using automatic mode (including, for example,

packet mode and radioteletype mode); or

(d) an amateur station using computer controlled mode (including, for

example, packet mode and radioteletype mode); or

(e) an amateur station at a remote location.

(2) The licensee must ensure that at all times when an amateur station is

operated unattended:

(a) a timer is fitted to the station to cause its automatic shutdown if a

malfunction causes an unintentional transmission of more than

10 minutes’ duration; and

(b) a transmission from the station can be terminated promptly if the

transmission causes interference to another service.

My Station

• Multi-Band HF. 160m-10m

• Comet GP9

• Future: - Amplifier Control - Antenna Switching - Rotator Control

My Remote Station

• Linksys Router

• RemoteRig box

• 7.2A/h SLA

• Yaesu Spkr

• IC706mkIIg

• Future Plans….

Control panel mode

• The most common way of using the system is with radios which have detachable control panels. Whit those radios you keep the real radio feeling as the system works exactly as when you have the control panel connected direct to the radio. And the most important thing is that no PC.s are needed at all. The Remoterig are tested and supports the following rigs with detachable control panels.

• Kenwood: TS-480, TM-D710, TS-2000 Yaesu: FT-857,FT-8800, FT-8900 ICOM: IC-703, IC-706, IC-R2500, IC-2725, IC-2820, ID-E880 Alinco: DX-SR8

• Note ! IC-7000 can NOT be used in this mode as the display info is sent as analog video signal.

Elecraft K3- Twin Concept

• The Elecraft K3 Twin concept gives the same feeling as the control panel mode. The Elecraft K3 Twin concept is a high end concept for the serious ham who do not accept any compromise even when remote controlling his station. You can use the K3/0, K3/10 or K3/100 as control. The K3/0 is a specially design control unit.

Yaesu Twin Concept

• The Yaesu Twin concept gives the same feeling as the Control panel mode above as you use a second transceiver as control “panel”. This is of course a more expensive way of remote controlling but it gives you the posibility to use the best radios available on the market even for remote control. This mode supports FT-450, FT-950, FT-2000, FT-5000 and FT-9000 even in cross combinations. No PC.s are needed in this configuration either.

Replacing traditional PC-Remote control

• The Remoterig system supports more traditional PC controlled remote control also, with the important difference that you do not need a PC on the Remote site. Most radios with some kind of serial remote control interface from Kenwood, ICOM,Yaesu, Elecraft, Tentec etc are supported

PC-remote control

• We also have a system called RRC-Micro which not need a Remoterig box in the control end, only a PC is needed with a our software client and the small USB-PTT/audio box. This system is very handy to use when traveling for example as you can use you laptop and connect to wireless LANs or mobile networks where ever you are.

Control panel and PC-remote control in combination

• The control panel mode and the PC-control mode can be combined also so you can use the control panel when at home and the RRC-Micro PC based system when travelling.

RRC-Micro-PC Client

As a complement to the hardware based Remoterig system there is also a PC-based client software which can be used instead of the RRC-1258 at the control side. This is convenient for those who for example travel and want to remote control the radio from a laptop from many different places

Webswitch 1216H

WEB-switch 1216H

Is a remote controlled switch with 5 relay outputs 230V/16A which can be controlled independently via the built in web server from any computer connected to the Internet.

Rotator Control 1216L

To create a web based rotator control the Rotator control Unit (RCU) is connected to the Webswitch 1216H. ake control. For the the azimuth (direction) reading there is A/D input which handles 0-7,5V or 0-15V. The A/D input is fully issolated. The RCU can be connected to most of the current available rotators and rotating tower controls. The indicatior can be calibrated every 30 degrees to handle potentiometers which is not linear.
