We collaborated with architect, Mary Kalmes, and Expo Kitchen and Bathto remodel this riverfront home. We opened up the kitchen to the river view bringing more light into this inviting room. The new walnut cabinets and engineered walnut flooring coordinate well with the Calacatta Miele natural quartzite countertops and limestone backsplash. The repurposed dining room chandelier brings the home’s tradition to the new space. The mudroom was enlarged and now includes the original, refinished St. Charles cabinets from the old kitchen. New appliances and flooring complete that room. The master suite space was reworked to gain an upscale bath and dressing room. The lyptus cabinets, Crema Marfil marble countertops and tile, and upscale fixtures make this a luxurious room. The new dressing room with California Closets provides ample storage for this great suite.

Don’t expect a remarkable “before/after” photo of the FRONT of this 1910 home, located in the popular Burns Park neighborhood. No changes there! But OH the delight of the interior changes! The rear addition added significant space and livability, while keeping the historic charm; matching existing mouldings, re-using doors, maintaining 1910 colors, AND adding beauty with walnut flooring, using wood from the owners very own tree! This young, growing family met with five design-build firms; they chose Acheson Builders, with our unique design skills, amazing craftsmanship, and our ability to work collaboratively to meet their goals, while respecting their budget. They desired more living space – an updated kitchen, guest suite, mudroom, and more – a long wish list! With creativity and inspiration, together we designed a plan that allowed completion in phases. A three story addition, including the framework for third floor future bedrooms and bath, met their goals for needed changes. To make it more affordable, this talented family completed some of the finish work themselves, while leaving the tricky carpentry work to us.

This 1921 Craftsman located in the historic Old West Side was converted into a duplex and used as a rental for many years. The house had good bones and the new owner wanted to turn it back into a single-family home and retain as much of the original character as possible. During this whole house renovation, we refinished and reused an original kitchen buffet with walnut counter, the fir wood floors, the original wood double-hung windows and the dark wood doors, trim and stairs. Working with the Historic District Commission, J. Bradley Moore Architects, MJ Cabinet Designs and Laura Zender Design, we built a 2-story addition that enlarged the new kitchen, added 1.5 baths, a family room, and a Master Suite with master bathroom and walk-in closet. New roof, paint (inside and outside), flooring, and garage finish the space beautifully.

5ALphA DesiGn+BuiLDKitchen and First Floor Makeover

While our clients love their Old West Side neighborhood and liked the bones of their house, their original 1960s eat-in kitchen felt cramped for a family of four, partitioned off from a similarly tight dining room. They wished to update their décor and improve communication between spaces for big family get-togethers.

We removed the wall between kitchen and dining room, and re-configured the kitchen with a combination of painted and stained cabinets in silvery tones, granite countertops, and floors reminiscent of driftwood. The new layout includes island cooking and seating, better ergonomics, multiple layers of lighting, and increased storage.

Key doorways in several areas have been widened and arched, transforming the view right from the new front door. Now minus a bulky closet and an outdated stair railing, the entry space feels inviting. In the family room, two new windows, lighting, paint and new furnishings transformed a dim man-cave into a serene retreat. A make-over for the formal living area rounded out the project.

We completed a first floor remodel with a large family room addition. In our design process, we created a large open kitchen that flows into the new family room, all set for daily living and entertaining. The kitchen is finished with custom cabinets, granite countertops, tile backsplash and beautiful hardwood flooring. The existing family room (behind the garage) was converted into a workshop and awesome mudroom. The exterior was finished with flowing stamped concrete patios and more entertaining areas.

This modest mid century 1350 sf ranch has been completely transformed to a stunning modern ranch featuring over 2800 sf. Most importantly, our design solution completely changed how this home flows and works for a family of five, and maintains the proper scale and proportion of the neighborhood. The addition wraps the entire existing home, and features prefabricated insulated foundation walls and green building techniques.

The existing roof was raised to create more volume and the steel beams were kept exposed keeping in theme with the mid-century modern home. Oak flooring was salvaged from the original home’s floor and re-purposed as a unique TV surround. The kitchen has more than doubled in size and a wall of windows to open it up to the outside. This kitchen features white Brookhaven cabinets wrapped in walnut. The modern feel is carried throughout the home with high ceilings and large open spaces. Specific remodeled rooms include kitchen, dining room, living room, bathrooms, master suite, laundry room, entry with built in cubbies, and finished basement.

ALphA DesiGn+BuiLDFinished Basement with Wet Bar, Bookcases, and Fireplace

This family built their home with the idea of someday finishing an adult retreat in the 1500sf basement. Consequently, they have 10 foot ceilings and a lot of open space. The design inspiration was family heirlooms and travel mementos, which can be seen incorporated throughout each area. The basement flows around a central staircase with architectural details to guide guests from one featured location to the next. The tour starts with a large kitchenette that includes detailed floor to ceiling maple cabinetry with granite counter tops for china display, a chandelier from England and terracotta heirloom tiles incorporated into the backsplash. Moving on from that point, there is a theatre area for guests to enjoy a large screen TV within cabinetry that ties this space to the kitchenette. Beyond the theatre is an open expanse for games and socializing. A large, welcoming fireplace with a granite surround and custom mantel of stained maple that is featured throughout the basement. The perimeter concludes with a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall custom bookcase with a 9 foot library ladder. The final touch is a relaxing retreat enhanced by another family heirloom, an English gothic chandelier, hanging over a table ready for a friendly game of chess.
