Releasing Tension in the
Larynx & ThroatThroat tension is a common complaint. A lot of people suffer from the end-of-the-day vocal
fatigue that comes from accumulated tension — from talking (on the phone) and/or using the oice
incorrectly. Also keep in mind that most oice pro!lems come from !eing dehydrated. "our ocal cords
lie #ithin the $Adams Apple% in the front throat or your area. hen there is tension in this area the
$Adams Apple% usually moes up#ard and closes the throat. The result is a oice #ith a thin tight
sound or an uncontrolla!ly !reathy sound' either lead to a sore throat and/or oice pro!lems. eres a
#ay to relax that tension*
Exercise for Releasing Throat Tension
• +ut your finger across your throat at the top of your $Adams Apple% and s#allo#.
• ,otice the up#ard motion of the $Adams Apple%.
• ,o# keeping your finger at the top of your $Adams Apple% relax and !egin a ya#n. ( -t is the
sensation that occurs at the !eginning of a ya#n that releases tension in the throat. The full
ya#n !rings tension).
• ,otice the do#n#ard motion of the $Adams Apple%. This motion opens the throat and releases
tension.
• "a#n again (not a full ya#n) and exhale !y sighing $ah% at a comforta!le high note #hile
descending rapidly through your oice.(sounds like a sigh).
• +ractice releasing tension in the throat #ith a ya#n/sigh motion times to release throat tension.
