For decades, health care costs have increased faster than inflation, with spending in the United States ballooning to 18% of total GDP.

According to the Health Care Cost Institute, mounting costs often force employers who sponsor workplace health coverage to make difficult choices when it comes to their health care offerings.

Unfortunately, making these tough decisions does little to combat rising health care costs in the long run and can also lead to dissatisfaction among employees, affecting everything from worker productivity to retention. According to a recent survey from America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), 56% of adults with employer-sponsored health benefits reported that their opinion of health care coverage is a key factor in deciding to stay at their current job.

The Aetna Connected Plan with CVS Health aims to deliver value for both employers and employees by leveraging the combination of Aetna’s provider performance networks with the reach of CVS Health retail locations. By the end of 2021, CVS Health’s retail locations are targeted to include over 1,100 CVS MinuteClinic® locations, 1,300 CVS® HealthHUBTM locations and nearly 10,000 CVS Pharmacy® locations.

By offering these members low-cost and, in many cases, no-cost clinical services at local MinuteClinic and CVS HealthHUB locations, the Aetna Connected Plan with CVS Health encourages timely treatment for many conditions, including acute conditions that could otherwise result in an emergency room (ER) visit.1 When employees use a MinuteClinic rather than an ER, costs are 90% lower,2 and employees report a 94% satisfaction rate3 for the care they receive. The Aetna Connected Plan with CVS Health also aims to boost member satisfaction by offering additional benefits, like 20% off select CVS Health-branded health and wellness products, along with free one- to two-day delivery and discounted on-demand delivery of prescriptions.

The design of the Aetna Connected Plan with CVS Health leverages this relationship, tapping pharmacists to not only ensure the safety and supply of members’ prescription medications, but also to help identify members’ other health needs and connect them in real time with additional points of care. And access to actionable data further enhances the abilities of other care providers in the plan’s network. By integrating member data from Aetna’s clinical networks with pharmacy and retail sources from CVS Health, the plan establishes a comprehensive view of a member’s overall well-being.

That allows pharmacists and other health care professionals to play a key role in monitoring chronic conditions and deliver savings through appropriate preventive care.

This can increase medication adherence and improve chronic condition management.* And a more holistic understanding of a member’s needs results in better-targeted communications with plan members, allowing Aetna to reach out to members with well-timed messaging that addresses their individual needs.

In addition, the plan doesn’t only give providers a more complete view of plan members. Members also have access to tools that allow them to review in-network providers that best meet their needs. A comparison tool available to all members allows them to identify highly rated in-network providers and filter the results based on ratings of clinical quality, cost-effectiveness or medical specialty. This gives members the satisfaction that comes with a choice of providers while still maintaining the cost savings associated with a strong care network.
