    Econom y :: UNITED KINGDOM

note : in use s ince 1745; by tradit ion, the song serves as both the national and royal anthem of the United

Kingdom; it is know n as either "God Save the Queen" or "God Save the King," depending on the gender of

the reigning monarch; it also serves as the royal anthem of many Commonw ealth nations

    Economy - overv iew:

The UK, a leading trading pow er and f inanc ial center , is the third larges t economy in Europe af ter Germany

and France. A gr iculture is intens ive, highly mechanized, and ef f ic ient by European s tandards , produc ing

about 60% of f ood needs w ith less than 2% of the labor f orce. The UK has large coal, natural gas , and oil

resources , but its oil and natural gas reserves are dec lining and the UK became a net impor ter of energy

in 2005. Serv ices , par t icular ly banking, insurance, and bus iness serv ices , are key dr ivers of Br it ish GDP

grow th. Manuf ac tur ing, meanw hile, has dec lined in impor tance but s t ill accounts f or about 10% of

economic output. In 2008, the global f inanc ial c r is is hit the economy par ticular ly hard, due to the

impor tance of its f inanc ial sec tor . Falling home pr ices , high consumer debt, and the global economic

s low dow n compounded Br itain's economic problems , pushing the economy into recess ion in the latter half

of 2008 and prompting the then BROWN (Labour ) government to implement a number of measures to

s timulate the economy and s tabilize the f inanc ial markets . Fac ing burgeoning public def ic its and debt

levels , in 2010 the CA MERON- led coalit ion government (betw een Conservatives and Liberal Democ rats )

init iated an aus ter ity program, w hich aimed to low er London's budget def ic it f rom about 11% of GDP in

2010 to near ly 1% by 2015. The CA MERON government raised the value added tax f rom 17.5% to 20% in

2011. It has pledged to reduce the corporation tax rate to 20% by 2015. How ever , the def ic it s t ill remains

one of the highes t in the G7, s tanding at 5.8% in 2013. The Bank of England (BoE) implemented an asset

purchase program of 375 billion (approx imately $586 billion) as of December 2014. Dur ing t imes of

economic c r is is , the BoE coordinates interes t rate moves w ith the European Central Bank, but Br itain

remains outs ide the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) . In 2012, w eak consumer spending and

subdued bus iness inves tment w eighed on the economy , how ever , in 2013 GDP grew 1.8%, accelerating

unexpec tedly because of greater consumer spending and a recover ing hous ing market.
