It is not pleasant to find your garden strE:wn samples of half growl"_ vegetables, or that the Junior Commandos have established a beach head in your plot with resultant embanassment to growing plants. Thank you.

Two Irate Gardeners.

We first· began operations on September 8, 1939, with our new Flexible-LaSalle ambulance, but it soon became apparent that it was most desirable to have another ambulance for use when the LaSalle was out of commission or engaged in some act of mercy whe·n emergency sick calls were r·~ceived, so that one ambulance could be available for these sick calls and the other for the numerous traffic accidents on our bm.y highways. We were fortunate in acquiring a used Nash which we were aela to convert and use as ar. auxiliary ambulance devoted a::most exclusively to road accident:;, reserving the LaSalle, whenever possible, for sick calls. The Nash did we!l for a used ear, but was frequently in need of repairs and has now reached a point where it is no longer safe to contilllue it i rt operation, making it necessary to use thE! LaSalle to answer all roa :i calls. As a result, there ••~~rill ofte:1 t.e timE•:; when thi<> vehiclE! will not be available for sick ·~ails. These sick calls are mounting steadil:yand thE~ need for a secm1d ambulance is now more vital than ever on account of the increasing number of traffic accidents duE~ largely to the suspension of gasoline rationing and speed limits.

S'tuar~l Dancing-- . 1' Who All's Afraid Of The Atom Bomb? To the Editor:

On the theory that fear and ignorance go hand in hand, a small group has gotten together to study the problems of living in an atomic age. We hope, by becoming infonm:d, to dispel some of our worries about atomic bombs. We are using as basis for discussion a study kit i~sued by the National Committee on Atomic Infomtation. Other copie of this kit are available at the Tobacco Store, and anyone interested in forming similar groups can contact me at 4-R Laurel Hill Road for informatio:n as to procedure.

Houlton Resigns As Women's Head

At a special board meeting of the Woman's Club held last Thursday at the home of Mrs. Hartford S. Downs, Mrs. Samuel Houlton announced her resignation as presidf>nt. The vice - president, Mrs. Downs, will serve as pres:dent during. the coming year. All other c:lftlcers remain the same.

The board voted a ten dollar dollatlon to the relief ftlnd for the refugee Jewi'>h -people of Europe, and fifteen doJlCU"S to CARE to provide ·one box for some unfor-

. ~1llnate family i~ Europe.

The territory served by tho~ Branch\ille Rescue Squad is large. It runs from Cat Tail Hill to Laurel, and from the Montgomery County Line on the 'Vest to and beyond the Edmonsto11: rd. on tht~ East, embracing an urea of ap. proximately 50 square mU.es, with a population of at least 25,000.

Our ambulances ha.ve traveled over 86,000 miles in the last six years, an annual average of 14,33::: miles. Last year we answe!red 34'i' sick calls an.d 198 road calls, in .. volving a total of 572 persons, and we expect a greater demand !or our services during the coming year.

All of our services ar4~ voluntary. Our men are specially trained in first-aid work and give their time and energy whole heartedly without expectation of reward. No salaries or fe-es are paid, but our

necessary expenses of operation have to be met. We do not make a charge for our sen.ices but occasionally s0me grateful patients will donate something for sen.·ices rendered. dependent upon their ability to pay. These donations, while gratefully recE!ived and appreciated, fall far short of meeting the costs of operation. Our only source of depend&ble income is an annual allotment from Prince Georges County, which, however, does not nearly cover all of our expenses, nor does it provide for replacement of equipment, and we must therefore appeal to our good friends and neighbors for assistance in raising sufficient funds to replace our worn out ambulance in order to make it possible for us to continue to funetion as an efficient unit.

To those of you who have not hac to call upon us we extend our greetings and hope that your good fortune may ·~ontinue. To those we have been privileged to sen.·e it seems unnecE•ss.:~ry to stress the value of our Hes,~ue Squad. \\"ithout the 3Upport of all of you we cannot carry on.

An authoriz€·d representative of the Branchville Rescue Squad will call upon you soon, and ,..,.e ask your generous response to this appeal.

At her home, 9-B Ridge Road, Sunday afternoon, June 9, Mrs. Mary G. Long presented 21 pupils in a piano recital. Stanley Edwards, Pearl Gold, Nettie Gump, Judy Kasko, Maureen Moore, Billy Morin, Fred Slaugh, Franklin Stuart, Josephine Sheaffer, Ann Turner, Sharon Thomas, Bobby Trumbule, Dot Wharton, and Ginty Yeatts.

Old friends of Mr. and Mrs. Comly Richie will be interested in the latest news from one of Greenbelt's pioneers. Mrs. David Steinle reports that in her latest letter ~rs. Richie proudly relates her son's graduation fr.om the 8th grade in \Vestchester, Pa., where the fam'ly now live.3. Neddie received the American Legion award for scholarship and character.
