·WATCHERS ON CRIME Locking the barn door after the horse is stolen-that

seems to be a universal human failing. Disasters happen to other people. Complacency is comfortable, enveloping like a soft cocoon.

And we Greenbelters living in. the central city have been complacent. Serious crime, though occurring around us, s~med limit~ to .the outer fringes, spilling over from trans~ent populations m the busy shopping rnalls. But now the violent mtrusion of two meP-) one of them masked into ": home in a quiet neighborhood of old Greenbelt has highlighted t~e vulnerability of us all. Som~ time ago the Greenbriar community, in res'J)ondini'

to t~e Impact of the growth of crime in this area,, organized a cnme-watc~ pr~gram which has been very effective. Resi-· dents ?~ Sprl!'ghlll Lake also have an- ongoing· program. Now c1t1zens m Lakewood subdivision have taken the first step, through a neighborhood meeting, to organize a similar program.

Th~s seems to us the way for each neighborhood organization to begin. The more we increase our knowledge about effective home security, the more we become alert to abnormal patterns of movement in our immediate areas the more we work with our city police department-the ~afer wiH we all become from threats to life and property. We urge the o~cers. of ~a~h citizens association to gear up as soon as posstble m stmtlar actions. And should they }\eed a Pt:OVderb to get them started, another old saying comes to mm : Forewarned is forearmed.

by Charles F. Schwan, Jr. We who are old or infirm, shut

in, or single parents have in common a need for the occasional companionship (){ other adult's. We may or may not have incomes adequate to serve our normal needs. We may or may not have famiJy members close at hand. We mlly or may not have reason to feel that we continue to be contributing members of society.

Generally speaking our material needs are assured by the social welfare safety net (although we might wish Its mesh wer~ R little tighter), by pensions and privRte insurance and by pri\'a:.e service organizations. Those of us who live In Green Ridge House or similar communal housing arc more fortunate than some others in circumstaMes otherwise similar to ours in that we have each other. But even we would welcome the leavening that mo1e younger faces would afford.

To repeat, we who are od or infirm, !ihut-in. or single parents have It\ common a need that only you as individuals can meet-to ease our occasional to frequent periods of loneliness. Please review your schedules to see if. from time to time, you could find a few minutes for us.

Prince Georges County officials will have to decide wtlether to go ahead with the project, once MES completes the feasibility study and presents its · project packal(e to them in January, 1984.

If County officials decide to go ahead with the project, at least one year will elapse before construction could begin.
