1 Remember the day the teacher walked into the classroom and said, “Class, put your books under your desk, take out a sheet of paper and number it from one to ten?” In Oklahoma terms, you were fixin’ to have a pop quiz. No more studying. No more preparation. You were either ready or not. Maybe you had a knot in your stomach because you had been goofing off the last few nights. Maybe you had a rush of adrenaline because that was the one class you didn’t do homework for the night before. Regardless, it was unexpectedly test time, and there was no more time to study. Just like inside a classroom, life has its tests—pop quizzes of our character: flat tire, IRS audit, medical report, relationship conflict, big promotion, elderly parent, pregnant teenager, unexpected bill, flood, tornado, airline delay, death. When stuff like this comes, we are tested. Do I endure or give up? Lie or tell the truth? Become callous or remain sensitive? Take responsibility or be unreliable? Forgive or get bitter? Indulge myself or exercise self-control? When the pop quiz comes, the way we respond reveals our character. Our children are facing pop quizzes in life, too, and guess where they are learning the answers? It has been said that character is more caught than taught. So, what are we pitching to our children? Want to make a difference at home with good character? Here are a couple of things you can do to “pitch” good character to your children: • Take a look in the mirror. What do my children see in me? What example am I setting? Am I humble and teachable when it comes to my character failures? Talk about choices. Use the Character Core magazine, current events, and teachable moments to illustrate the consequences of choices and how good character is the right choice to make. • Tell them the good. Catch your children doing good and celebrate the good character you see in their life. Use the Kimray pocket guide for common vocabulary and practical definitions. One of our core values at Kimray is strengthening the family. The main purpose of the monthly Character Core magazines, the recognition of good character, and the Making A Difference @ Home Workshops, is to help employees be successful at home. I’ve heard Mr. Hill say dozens of times, “If we help people be successful at home, they will be successful at work.” We want to prepare our children to have a great new school year. Let’s also be intentional in preparing them to pass the character pop quizzes they will face throughout their lives. Remember the day the teacher walked into the classroom and said, “Class, put your books under your desk, take out a sheet of paper and number it from one to ten?”

In Oklahoma terms, you were fixin’ to have a pop quiz.

No more studying. No more preparation. You were either ready or not. Maybe you had a knot

in your stomach because you had been goofing off the last few nights.

Here are a couple of things you can do to “pitch” good character to your children:

• Take a look in the mirror. What do my children see in me? What example am I setting? Am I humble and teachable when it comes to my character failures?

• Tell them the good. Catch your children doing good and celebrate the good character you see in their life. Use the Kimray pocket guide for common vocabulary and practical definitions.

GET IN THE GAME WITH HUDDLESBy Bob Cole

Athletes don’t like sitting on the side-lines. They want to get in the game and help their teams win. In order to do that, they have to be on the same page with the rest of the play-

ers. They have to join a huddle and figure out the next play.

Imagine a football game where each player is running a different play or trying to reach differ-ent goals. It would be chaos! Surprisingly, this is the way many companies operate.

In our financial literacy training class, we are learning that many companies operate with only a few people knowing the company goals, and even fewer knowing how they impact those goals. This lack of alignment is primarily due to a breakdown in communication.

The Great Game of Business philosophy gives us a tool to help eliminate this problem. It is called the “Huddle.” The Huddle is where team members throughout the company gather to present the financial or operational numbers they expect their work group to hit by the end of the month. This is called “forward forecast-ing.” These numbers are added to everyone else’s numbers, giving a complete picture of the company’s performance and profitability for the month. This is how we check the score so everyone knows the financial condition of the company in real time, not a month or two after the fact.

Huddles occur on a regular basis, giving teams and departments a chance to update their numbers as better information becomes available. The purpose of forecasting is not to predict the future, but to influence it. A good huddle creates focus, accountability and clarity on how to improve results.

Several departments at Kimray have been huddling on a week-ly or monthly basis, and soon the management group will start huddling to forecast monthly expenses from each department. In time, everyone at Kimray will be part of a huddle to look at the numbers most relevant to each work team.

I still remember the excitement I felt as a boy when the coach would call my name and send me into the game. Today, all of us are called into the “great game of business” at Kimray where we get to work and win together! ◆

Within the main building on 42nd Street, Kimray’s supply chain department guides and executes purchasing, forecasting, planning, scheduling, shipping and receiving. In 2014, the department’s purchasing team bought

about $128 million in raw materials, office products, services and more. Realizing any savings they find can positively impact prof-it, purchasing actively practices Kimray’s core value of responsible stewardship to secure

the best price on the materials and services that contribute to an overall quality product for which Kimray is so well known.

Learn more about the purchasing team in the following Kimray Department Detail.

• Your department has a budget to stick to. Traceability of your purchases and ensuring they get charged to the right general ledger account is a critical part of responsible stewardship. Purchasing can assist by pulling reports from Power-link and other external sources to help guide budgetary purchases.

What’s Powerlink? It’s a purchasing site Kimray departments can use to buy supplies for maintenance, repair and operations. If you frequently order supplies and have not used Powerlink before, email IThelp to set up an account.

• Your department needs something beyond Powerlink. When it comes to buying anything, the purchasing team is

here to assist in any way possible. Email them at [email protected].

• They know what tricky costs to look for. Remember the last time you thought you found a great deal online, only to get to the checkout page and discover the thing you wanted was much more expensive with taxes, shipping and other fees? The purchasing team knows how to get products in on time, at the best quality and at the most competitive price.

• To free up time you could be using to focus on departmental tasks. Instead of using your time researching and shop-ping for items, use the purchasing team’s expertise and resources. Their experi-ence in knowing what questions to ask can be a time saver.

• They’re committed to responsible stewardship. So far this year, Kimray’s purchasing team has negotiated savings of over $700,000 in raw material purchases and with a renegotiation of the Bible study lunch contract with Chic-Fil-A, netted $20,000 in savings! Another recent change with an office supply company will help Kimray better define its costs and improve control of the purchasing process through approver assignments and reporting. The adjustment could mean even more savings for Kimray!

Remember that every one of these dollars saved has a direct, positive impact on Kimray’s profitability.

Kimray’s suppliers will attend the 3rd Annual Supplier Symposium, September 10, 2015, in the Kimmell Conference Center. Our suppli-ers attend the symposium to learn more

about how their materials are used in Kimray products. After several supplier requests to get an inside look into our company’s empha-sis on good character, this year they will get

to experience a workshop on character in the workplace.

EMPLOYEE RECOGNITIONS

Throughout life we will have opportunities to grow spiritually, in intellect, in physical abilities, social connections, character and in many other ways. Growth does not happen unintentionally. We all have been in circumstances where we could have capitalized on the situation to grow in some beneficial way, but passed on the opportunity.

Years ago, I asked the Lord to help me live until I die. That may seem like an odd request, or maybe even nonsensical. I desire to learn and grow and enjoy my time on earth until it is over. I don’t want to die and wait thirty years for it to take effect.

A lot of what makes life interesting and fulfilling is growth. In Ephesians we are told that The Father is continuing to help all of His children to reach the full stature of Christ Himself. In the movie Karate Kid, Daniel wants to learn karate so Mr. Miyagi has Daniel wax his vintage automobiles—“Wax on, wax off”. In the simple movements, Mr. Miyagi shows Daniel how to put the wax on and take it off, but more than that, he is learning fundamental defensive moves of karate. Through life’s experiences and challenges our Father will use each and every one to show us something essential for life and godliness. The end result is Christ-likeness, the very reason we were created.

“Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge; and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness; and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
