Introduction A major venue for cave concerts and theater in the Sauerland region, located not far south of the Ruhr Valley, the largest urban agglomeration in Germany. The cave can seat up to 2000 people and it rates itself rightly as the biggest cultural cave in Europe.

The Balver Höhle has a very long history of being used for theater plays, concerts of all sorts of music, ballet, and other performances. In the 1920s operas were performed in the cave and during World War II it was used for ballroom dancing. Starting in 1949 up to 1958 theater plays were given there nearly every year. In 1980 the Westphalia Symphony Orchestra gave a classical concert (see photo). Since then many famous soloists, choral groups, jazz

bands, world music groups, and ballet troupes have performed there over the years. (Allhoff-Cramer 1996)

Rockadillo ZENCD 2039 & Jaro 4101-2 (Tks 1-6) Notes: A Finnish jazz band plays six numbers live in the Balver Cave during the 7th Jazzfestival Balver Höhle. This group often combined jazz and world music into a swing blend. Some of the selections here show marked influence from Latin American and Middle Eastern music. There’s some lively, swinging stuff here, go to musicme and give it a listen. Most of the running times given in the liner notes are too short. They haven’t taken into account the audience applause at the end of each piece. Introduction Another major venue for cave concerts in the Sauerland region, located quite close to the Ruhr Valley. The concert room is the Kanzelgrotte [Pulpit Room], about one third of the way back on the show cave tour (red arrow). To stage left (right for the audience) is a fine display of stalagmitic ribbon drapery and two Christmas-tree stalagmites. There is folding chair seating for about 150 to 200 people. A side passage to the south of this room provides an emergency exit.

(Doerr 2001) [The water drops, wind, and the fluttering of bats provide a faint background for instruments like the shakuhachi, flute, didgeridoo and a synthesizer. Tones are also produced on the calcite formations themselves. The most powerful instrument is the unique sound and reverberation of the cave chamber itself, which has much depth and a special restful quality.]

Another critic said that Günter Müller plays the stalactites like tubular bells. (A.S.-Red 2000) [Crystal sounds in free rhythmic patterns are combined with wind instruments such as the shakuhachi (a traditional Japanese bamboo flute lacquered inside), the fujara (a Slovak bass flute), the bansoori, and sound shells. Those performing with Günter Müller are Chris Kramer on harp and dobro and Andreas Burghardt on the korg. The various sections of the cave offer special acoustic properties, which are not encountered on the surface: in addition to the sounding stalactites and the changing rhythms of water drops on the breakdown and rocks which is mainly due to the high humidity.] For other compositions and other recordings in caves by Günter Müller see under New Age music – Blue Cave, Echo in der Undendlichkeit, & Kristalle and just below under Recordings in Natural Caves – Echo in der Unendlichkeit – RIC-DE9. “Seit Sommer 1998 finden im Inneren der Höhle, im sog. Tempelraum (ca. 800 m² Gesamtfläche, 8-9 m Raumhöhe), Konzerte statt.” (Anon. 2 n.d.) [Since the summer of 1998 concerts are held inside the cave in the so-called Temple room (about 800 m² and 8-9 m high).] During the summer months from May to early October concerts and candlelight dinners with music are held there regularly. Stage design and special lighting are varied accordingly. The photo shows the Scala Tympani group performing in the Tempelraum (see below - Klangreise in die Unterwelt – RIC-DE15 and Höhlenmusik – RIC-DE16). Eight CD albums of concerts recorded in this cave between 1998 and 2004 are presented here; of these seven were available from the show cave itself (but are now all out-of-print) and one was a separate commercial offering. Introduction Another venue for cave concerts in Germany located west of Ulm. The concerts are held in the

Haupthalle, a 25 meter-high chamber (6,000m²) not far from the entrance, reached by walking past the important archaeological dig. A wooden stage has been built at the base of the clay slope in this room (the wood railing can just be seen silhouetted at the lower left of this photo). The audience sits as best they can on the ramps which make hairpin twisting turns up the slope to the back wall. “In 2008, a team from the University of Tubingen, led by archaeologist Nicholas

Conard, unearthed a bone flute in the cave, and found two fragments of ivory flutes in nearby caves. The flutes date back at least 35,000 years and are some of the earliest musical instruments ever found.” (Anon. n.d.) In this section we have three CD albums recorded in the Hohler Fels Cave: one by Martin Bürck and two by Christoph Haas, the second of which also has the Banda Maracatú ensemble. [The power and the sounds of the gongs with their archaic 'primal sound' spring from silence. This has led me to choose such a 'primal place' for a concert, a venue where the primal force of creation is seen and felt. And a place where in a particularly special way, the silence can be heard, a silence that cannot be found anywhere else. A silence that can give a notion of time, of eternity and can let us also listen on our individual existence... Today in this cave I want to invite you on a journey with the music of my gongs along the path of the water: passing along the 'drops of eternity,' hidden rivulets, streams, lakes and rivers, along to the sea, evaporating through the power of the sun and falling back to earth as rain.] Five of the pieces here seem to have been inspired by the cave in some way. The other pieces relate to the cycle of water. For further information about the cave-inspired music performed by Martin Bürck see under Contemporary Art Music – Avant-Garde – Höhlenkonzert. Klangräume 30440 (Tks 1 to 14) Notes: Haas relates that – “To give a concert in a cave has always been a dream of mine. In the summer of 1999 this dream came true: I was invited to play the ‘Hollow Cliff.” A veritable Cathedral in the earth, this cave has a height of 25 meters and encompasses 6000 cubic meters. To enter the cave is to enter a different world. Water drips constantly from the ceiling in the dark and damp interior, creating a multitude of changing rhythms. Archeological findings show that humans lived in this cave for thousands of years. People ate here, sacrificed, made cave paintings, held rituals, sang and drummed. In preparing this concert, I choose instruments that were probably used by the early inhabitants of this cave: frame drums, clay pot drums, musical bows and rattles.” (Haas, n.d.) When Christoph Haas performed in the Haupthalle he stationed himself halfway up the ramp walkway against the southwest wall. This CD also includes a 17-minute VHS video film. Short audio clips of tracks 12 & 14 provided minimalist experimental percussion music. Track 10 has the subtitle, “Trois Frères,” suggesting possible inspiration by the renowned Paleolithic art cave in Ariège, France – Grotte des Trois Frères. (Label & Cat. No. Unknown) (Tks 1 to 10) Notes: Christoph Haas is founder and director of the percussion ensemble "Banda Maracatú.” This was a cave concert held on the night of the feast day of St. John the Baptist where the traditional fire is burned to welcome in the solstice.

(Rahnefeld 2005) [Christoph Haas and "Banda maracatú" selected instruments for their cave concert, which date back to a much more ancient time: frame drums, music, bows and rattles are among the oldest musical instruments. In prehistoric times, their rhythms helped the women and men, which we refer to as seer or shaman, to reach that state, which was necessary for healing and divination.] Only a small quantity of this CD were pressed and it is now entirely sold out. (Haas 2017) The photo shows the Banda Maracatú playing in the cave on the

occasion of a later concert. A nice video of this 2004 concert in two parts by Uli Haas & Axel Kühlem can be viewed on YouTube.
