Thank you, thank you, thank you from Rachel Freem an School of Engineering for thewonderful school supplies, which disappeared quickly. We will continue to accept any furtherdonations.

In addition, Krysta Hess, one of our special needs teachers, has asked for volunteers to help in herclass. If you have never worked with special needs students before, it is a very rewarding experience. Please let me know if you would like to help.

Laurie [email protected]

Friends of Rachel Freeman

We are excited to have a variety of ways to help the students and staff at Rachel Freeman School ofEngineering. Areas you can help in are:

School Library, Lunch Buddy (any time between 10:45am-12:45pm), Classroom Volunteer,Mentor a Student (Once a Week), Monetary Donations (Student Incentives Fund, TeacherAppreciation Fund), Donate Snacks for the Teacher’s Lounge, Adopt a Classroom (help withsupplies & needs for 1 classroom)

If you would like to be a part of this great partnership, please contact Laurie Wierse [email protected].

The STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) Lab at Rachel Freeman School is back up andfull of students for the new school year. The students are required to keep a STEM composition notebook totrack their lab work. Most students do not have the means of purchasing these notebooks and the teachers end up pay-ing for many out of their own pockets. With over 400 students using the STEM lab each week…that’s a lot of note-books to cover. Our congregation has done such an awesome job with the start-up supplies for the school and wewould like to keep the momentum going by providing these important STEM notebooks for the students.

Therefore, we are asking that every member pick up a few black & white composition notebooks and dropthem off in the box for the Rachel Freeman School located in the Narthex. We ask that they are the wide-ruled blackand white composition notebooks with closed binding and not spiral bound type so that the pages don’t tear out. Asalways, thank you for your continuous generosity in providing these young minds with the materials they need to learnabout how God’s creation works! If you have any questions about Rachel Freeman School or the STEM Lab, feel freeto contact Clem Surak at [email protected] or 910-319-3455.

UPDATE ON THE MEMORIAL GARDEN COLUMBARIUM PROJECT

You may have noticed that part of the lot above the church parking lot was cleared a few monthsago, due to the generosity of a member donation. Since that time, the Committee has met severaltimes to plan what comes next. You will see the orange ribbon stakes that set forth the proposedGarden site.

In the next couple months, a contractor will be selected to continue the preparation of the site, byadding several loads of fill dirt, grading, shaping the bank and seeding with matting to stabilize.

We are pleased to know that under the supervision of Dave Riggs and Jim Little, Tristan Stull, asan Eagle Scout project, will be developing a work plan to build a bridge over the ditch. This willprovide an accessible entrance to the Garden. We are grateful for this important support to theproject.

Another important step has been taken by the opening of a separate bank account for this project, administered through the Church Council. Therefore, memorial gifts and donations exclusive tothis purpose will be for use in the development and continuation of the Memorial Garden andColumbarium, and should be specified as such when given.

A drawing of the proposed project is being developed in consultation with committee members. When this is finalized we will be communicating with the Council, the Congregation and thecolumbarium company, before footings can be dug to support the various aspects of the Garden. We expect there will be two choices for the placement of ashes: niches in the columbarium, and ascatter garden.

Please pray for the committee as deliberations take place, and a proposal is developed forpresentation to the Council and Congregation for approval.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS

Word & Wonder—Your help is really needed!! We still need some additional worship leaders for W ord &Wonder. Two adults are needed for each session. You don't have to prepare any lesson plans; it is all prepared foryou. All you need to do is to help our young children grow in their faith. Please consider being part of this veryimportant and exciting ministry so that no one will be overloaded. It only takes a few minutes, and all the materialyou need is provided for you. Please contact the church office or Jennifer Larkins (470-6736), the ministry’s coor-dinator, to sign up. Thank you for your help.

Adult Sunday School—Adult Sunday School will continue this Sunday with the 2nd session of the 7-part videoseries "How Lutherans Interpret the Bible" by Dr. Mark Allen Powell of Trinity Lutheran Seminary. This week'ssession is entitled "How to Study the Bible". This excellent study was used in Fall 2011 and was very well re-ceived by the class. Those that have seen it before will want to experience it again. Really!! If you were not in theearlier class, you will want to be here for this one. Dr. Powell is a wonderful speaker, and his presentation on howwe view the Bible is very educational and meaningful. Come join us and be part of the conversation. We meet at10:00 in Perry Hall. All are invited and all are welcome.

Small Groups—Due to two surgical situations and other personal issues with our leaders, we will probably onlyhave 1 small group started this Fall. This will be in the Plantation Village area. We hope to have additional smallgroups started in the Spring in the Leland area, Porters Neck, and in the Middle Sound Loop area. More infor-mation will be provided as I get updates.
