One of the most important design aspects in your home is often one that is completely over looked. The
lighting design of a space can make or break the look. It needs to be functional, but it can also be one way to add sparkle to a room and tie the interior together. The dining room light is one that I often get asked about by my clients. They usually want to know if people are still doing chandeliers or what the current trend is. Depending on the style and era of the home I like to go with a cluster of pendants or one oversized light fi xture that makes a statement.
In the dining room it is important that you have options and settings with the light levels. I like to make sure that the lighting can be controlled on a dimmer switch so that you can dictate the mood that you want to accomplish for your dinner guests. There may be different requirements
depending on whether you are hosting your child’s birthday party for their friends or an adult dinner party with your friends. I like to provide as many options as possible. If the light fi xture that you choose doesn’t provide enough light for the room, you can install a series of pot lights to compliment a feature in the room. However, always make sure to
keep the light over your table as the main feature of the room. It helps to ground the furniture and pull the whole look together.
Many of the clustered pendant light fi xtures will come in a series of confi gurations and sizes. They can range from three hanging pendants all the way up to a dozen or more. You can hang them at different heights or in different patterns to achieve an interesting look. Make sure that you hang the fi xture low enough. I often see the
mistake of hanging fi xtures too high being made. Depending on the light fi xture, I
would usually hang the light 32”-36” above the table. You want to be able to have a centre piece on the table without it touching the light, as well as still be able to see the faces of your dinner guests and be able to comfortably carry on a conversation.
