Your home’s energy costs can drain your hard-earned dollars. It’s a simple scientific fact: heat moves towards cold. In winter months, it’s drawn to the cold glass of win-dows to escape a home. Heat lost this way ac-counts for 10 to 25 percent of heating bills. WeatherizeSeal up holes, weather-

strip doors and insulate attic floors. When the fire-place is not in use, keep the damper closed tightly.

InsulateDon’t just insulate the

attic. Add insulation at the window with window fashions that have high energy ratings.

Duette Architella honeycomb shades pro-vide superior energy ef-ficiency. They have a patented construction consisting of a honey-

comb nestled within a honeycomb. This creates three honeycomb pock-ets to trap the air. Certain Duette Architella shades can reduce heat loss through windows by up to 40 percent in winter.

Maintain your mechanical systemsService and clean your

gas or oil furnace at least once a year and change or clean furnace filters once a month during the heat-ing season. And, invest in a programmable thermo-stat that lets you set tem-peratures for different times of the day. Studies have shown that turning the heat down from 22 to 18 degrees C (72 to 65 de-grees F) for at least eight hours a day can reduce heating bills by 10 percent.

The popular notion that the higher you set your heater’s thermostat, the faster your home will warm up is not true. In reality, it takes the same amount of time for the temperature to reach 21 degrees C (70 degrees F)) whether the thermostat is set at 21 or 32 degrees (70 or 90 F). Setting the thermostat all the way up only increases your heat-ing costs.

Also, remove air-condi-tioning units in the fall and

winter because they invite drafts. Or, use an insulat-ed jacket on the exterior.

Watch your windows In winter, on the rare

sunny day, open your win-dow coverings to let in the solar heat, but be sure to close them at night. Hunt-er Douglas makes a solar energy sensor that can be mounted directly to the window pane to control motorized window fash-ions. In ‘winter’ mode, the sensor raises shades at the appropriate instance to al-low solar energy into the room for warmth.

Keep the air circulating In winter, don’t block

floor registers, baseboards or radiators with rugs, furniture or other items. If you have ceiling fans with a reverse setting, turn them on low and re-verse when using a lot of heat. Warm air rises and often gets trapped near the ceiling; the reverse air flow from the fan will help circulate the warm air around the entire room.

Remember, a physically fit home is the best way to keep those energy bills in check.

Granite is igneous rock of superior strength and when quarried it naturally consists of quartz and feldspar. When shopping for a sink, look for a high quartz component com-bined with acrylic to pro-duce the life-long dur-ability it will surely need.

“You will see that around 80 per cent of the material used in the Cristadur sink is quartz, the hardest constitu-ent of granite,” Pearce explained. “When com-bined with high-grade

Here are a few more shopping tips to get it right:

• Beauty is also in the touch. Run your hand over the surface to see if the sink is porous and rough, or pore-free and silky smooth?

• The smoothest sur-face will give you better sanitation as well, since it’s easier to clean. No pores means the dirt and germs will simply run off.

• Ask for a demonstra-tion on stain resistance. The best granite sinks will repel red wine, coffee

and heavy pans with ab-solutely no marks.

• Compare granite sinks for their visual beauty. The best will have an ultra-fine structure and a gleaming finish.

• Make sure when selecting the colour of granite sink, that it com-plements the colour of your countertop.

Do you feel that? There’s that recognizable chill in the air. Fall’s back with its shorter days and changing leaves. It’s time again to shut down the cottage for the winter.

You spend so much time and money on your family cottage, that it only makes sense to do all you can to protect it. By be-ing as thorough as pos-sible, you’ll not only keep out the weather and little critters, but according Desjardins General In-surance, you’ll also keep your property insurance costs down by reducing the chance of damage over the winter and any resulting claims.

Keep in mind that on average, closing your cot-tage can take up to four weekends. Aim to be fin-ished by the Thanksgiving weekend because the cold and frost tends to arrive earlier in cottage country. Here’s a brief check list to help you stay organized:

Take a good look around your entire

property Identify anything that

may need an emergency repair before you close for

the season and make sure there’s time to get it done. A good example is roof re-pairs, because snow and ice over the winter could make the problem much worse.

Animal and weather proof your place

• Clean out the gutters and the chimney. Before you leave for the sea-son, be sure to cover the chimney to keep out the weather and animals.

• Check for and seal any small openings.

• Secure and seal all the windows and doors.

Make your cottage burglar-proof

Ultimately, you want to your place as uninterest-ing as possible. If you have a gate at the entrance of your driveway, chain it up. Tidy up outside, pack-ing up all outdoor furni-ture and removing any fire hazards. Inside, close your blinds, curtains and/or shutters.

Clean out your kitchen and fridge

Canned food can ex-

pand and possibly ex-plode over the winter and other food items can attract mice. Leave your cupboards spotless so that you won’t come back to any surprises in the spring.

If you’d rather not bring it all the way back to the city, consider throwing an end-of-season party for your neighbours or donate it to a local food-bank.

Turn off the water, electricity, and in some cases, the natural gas

Be sure to drain the pipes to prevent freez-ing and cracking. Pouring environmentally friendly non-toxic antifreeze (used in RVs) into your toilets is a good idea if you’re un-able to drain them com-pletely.
